EhmiEhmi Hehe, we never stay on topic, but I think the whole hair cut/characterization thing is related. Renee and Rob both wanted to express the fact that Gabrielle was more of a grown up, and they came up with the hair cut idea. Gabrielle still had issues with killing, and she still wanted to promote peace, but she had learned by then that sometimes, you just have to punch people's lights out to get them to stop bothering you...at least in her and Xena's world, where people were constantly chasing them down to kill them, that was true. As far as asthetics, I love the short-haired Gabrielle. She was tougher and sexier. I will always hold long-haired Gabrielle dear in my heart, though, for all the ideals she stands for and the sweet, naive, innocence she represents. I love them both dearly for very different reasons, I guess. My feelings exactly!!!!!

While it's possible that I'm just too attached to long-hair Gabby, when you said short-hair Gabby was "tougher and sexier" you were totally right! And I hate that! In my eyes, Gabby is the lovable little sidekick. She represents innocence and kindheartedness. While the short-hair Gabby is still all for peace, she's sexier and tougher as you said. In my opinion, Gabby wasn't supposed to be sexy or tough. She was supposed to be one of those rare characters that you adore for all the right reasons. And I think that's the way it should have stayed. 3nodding

Mekanikal_Pankake Eveosin Hahah quiet and emotional. I never really thought about it before, but it's true. But that just proves the great character developement through the show 3nodding Seriously, watch an episode from season 1, then one from season 6...they're both complete different people really. I heart it But you can have character development without doing damage to the characters core personality! Sure, people change. But it's our characteristics that change. We all have a core personality that identifies us as who we are from birth until death. No matter how your interests, speech patterns, actions, or even base emotions change, we'll still have that core personality. That's the problem with characters in long stories. They tend to lose it through attempts at character development. You said "they're both completely different people". Well, that's true. It doesn't matter whether her characteristics change or not. She simply isn't Gabby anymore. (Sorry, that was total babbling and had nothing to do with her hair. sweatdrop ) well she still waz gabbyish.... ninja she just didnt have teh kid part in her 3nodding hahahaha rofl an yuu didnt even see gabby with short hair yet rofl

And I think that's the way it should have stayed. 3nodding I still adored her for all the right reasons. I mean, she was still her. Just not as naive, I guess. I don't think you can stay innocent after going through everything she did. I wasn't really all for her 'gung-ho' attitude in season 5, but they eventually evened everything out in season 6 so that she was balanced and back to being a character we could admire. I mean, I think it takes a lot of strength to not kill the man that murdered your family and turned your niece into a harem girl... I'm pretty sure I'm babbling at this point, but I think what I'm getting at is that Gabrielle was still her, only she had become a bit more wise to the world. She was tougher, but she still had a soft, playful side to her by the end of season 6. Either way, I think I liked the evolution of her character but I'm still fairly attached to her with long hair because she looks so cute. Like an elf! Especially when she has the strawberry-blonde hair in season 1 and wore the reddish-brownish outfit (it looks like a reddish color to me).

I just watched the Ides of March last night, and I was strangely missing long-haired Gabrielle. Partially because I didn't like the season 4 short hair and partially because in the end when they are sitting/laying in the jail cell waiting to be crucified, it seems like a long-haired Gabrielle kind of scene. She's got those big, soul-filled eyes, and she's comforting Xena.... *sigh* I always thought they should end the show more like that, where they both die together instead of (Edit!) the actual way it ends, which I wasn't quite in favor of, but does not involve Xena and Gabrielle dying on a cross in Rome.... ninja

Gosh I love that picture. One of my favorites for sure. whee Anyway! To continue the discussion- Of course everybody loves long hair Gabby. But you have to admit that at times she got really really annoying. A little too naive, or innocent to truly be Xena's side kick. I mean, Xena kicks butt and is pretty hardcore. It's kind of strange for her life long companion to be so sheltered and child-like. Sure, it adds contrast to the two, but it still doesn't really fit the overall vibe of the show. Comedic relief is important. But one Joxer is enough.
