nathan_ngl King of lames rofl cougharecougharecoughKing solomon knew kishufim (black magic) and white magic too, so technically, magic does exist. It depends what foces you use - if it's tuma'a, then it's black magic, if it's out of tahora, binding with G-d, then it's white magic.i don't think that using the G-d's name is a kishuf... (on his ring). and not only solomon could do "magics" with the name of G-d, some amoraim or tanaim could use the name too...

darkphoenix1247 neutral What does Judaism say about magic? Is it good, bad, or both? And who gets to use it? sweatdrop magic, as it's viewed today, is bad. very bad. it's called a "force of tuma'a", impurity (tuma'a is one of those concepts that cannot be translated. it is, in essence and in short, the antithesis of holiness). "white magic", however, is on the whole included in that wonderful topic we call kabalah. this sort of magic comes from spiritual holiness, and closeness with Hashem. there are many cases of this throughout tanach, talmud, and even recent times (a famous case is the golem of prague, in the 17 century) it is true that shlomo hamelech (shlomo the king) knew both. he knew most everything. in fact, he was the wisest man in the history of Creation (if anyone doubts this, read his writtings, specifically ecclesiastes (koheles), or shir hashirim (song of songs). and don't try to read the hebrew version of shir hashirim. it'll confuse the hell out of you. go with artscroll's translation of rashi's rendering). however, he did not actually perfom "dark magic".

ZonkotheSane however, he did not actually perfom "dark magic". Indeed, he banned it from the kingdom. There are stories of how he fought the powers of tu'mah with his powers of tahara.

nathan_ngl Just so all of you know, my physics exam was really hard scream . ::wants to kill someone, and is considering his teacher as a victim:: ninja *feels nathan's pain* I hated physics! blehhh And I was one of the unlucky NY students who got the brand-new physics exam, in which a ridiculous percentage of students failed. gonk (I think it was somewhere near 80% or somthing) My school ended up just not factoring it into my final GPA. (even though it didn't matter at that point, since I was already accepted into university)
