Words cannot express how saddened we all are (Or at least those of us who are not rude, obnoxious party crashers) at the loss of such a woman.
From the moment of her birth, she was raised to be a healer- kind and compassionate. However, with her later upbringing in the slums, she has gained a somewhat toughened exterior, and has gotten used to the life of the city. Still, her connection with the planet was undeniable: She was a complete and utter master of Materia- far more so than even Yuffie.
As far as a game standpoint, she could do anything as long as she had the right combination of Materia. Example:
I was planning (God help me) on turning her into a frontline fighter that could compete with even Tifa as far as attack power goes (No one can match Cloud for Strength or Barret for Vitality). As soon as I got it, I gave her the HP+ and Long Range materia, a few healing spells, and a few attack spells that would be of use. I also took the liberty of using any Strength/Vitality Ups I could get my hands on in order to get her to survive, since her magic attack, magic defense, and MP stats were already rediculously high.
As it turns out, she is a master of ANY materia you give her, including the independent ones. The ploy worked like a charm, and she became the second most powerful character in the game, as well as the most well-balanced combination of attack and magical attack. It's proof that anyone, no matter what their initial role is, can be anything you make them out to be.
Other than that, she was my favorite character, personality-wise. Not to hate or flame or anything, but all things considered, Tifa has less mental strength and fortitude in the game than she does in Advent Children. She is too easily shaken by events that happen. Aerith is simply made of tougher stuff.
And for those that haven't noticed, Cloud and Aerith are an excellent pairing. There were signs in the game (ten tons of them) that had she not died, the two of them were meant to be. That's why I think that Sephiroth is such a b*****d for killilng her. He did it not only to further his already sick agenda, but he probably did it out of spite.
Punk. That's why I kicked his a** so fast- I was pissed.
But let's not forget Great Gospel! I mean, come on. The second most potent Limit Break in the entire game, people (first one is Omnislash). Via divine intervention, not only is your party fully revived, recovered, and cleared of negative stats, but turn frickin' immortal for the rest of the battle! If that's not cool, I don't know what is. I think that's better than any attack, any day.
So then... Rest In Peace, Aerith. You shall be missed by all.

Wow, there have been some very touching eulogies so far. ^_^ Aeris's death is one of the reasons I think that video games are a viable artform. The fact that we all still talk about her nearly a decade later is a testament to that. Yeah, I definitely cried the first time I watched her death scene. (I was only eight at the time, though, watching my brother play.) When I played through myself for the first time, despite knowing her eventual fate, I still brought her into my team because I thought she was an awesome character. I never did get Great Gospel, but I plan on replaying again someday and obtaining it. And I definitely think Cloud would have ended up with her had she lived. Anyway, rest in peace, Aeris.

I still say Aeries' death was pointless and a complete waste of time. Only, I did like the music that played when you fight Jenova-LIFE

I lovd aeris in my party i might not of had her there all the time but she was alwaysthere when i needed her with her spectacular healing abilities. but besides her uses in the game she was such a nice kind person that never seemed to get down. aeris always made it seem like things would get better even when there seemed like there was no hope and i have deeply missed her and sheed tears when she died. (looks at coffin tear comes down eye)

Miss her only slightly because she was the only one that had pulled my partys a** out of trouble on the elevator, but otherwise shes better off dead. Cloud is the healer now.

aris was one of the most loved characters of all time in my book. she was a wonderful kind compassionate person with a strong will and even stronger heart. she did not deserve to die but i belive she forgave sepiroth and did not hate him even in death. she understood a persons soul far better than anyone else did and it is because i belive she forgave him that i did...even thos a small smile still threatened to form on my face when he died. i frankly dont understand why people found her anoying in the least bit. she held so much knowlage of how to help someone in need and yet still manged to hold such an inocent air about her...aris was a truly special character who touched my heart crying (say im corny if you want and no im not gay so dont go thinking im atracted to her) and thus that ends my sermon...

*come in eye twitching trying to hide a smirk, I look around seeing people mourning the death of Aeris and start to feel sick... I pull out my Souba blade and runs around cutting every1's head off, I then set everything on fire like sephiroth did to the town*
