November 2018 Academy: Language Arts Freshling 1. Student picks a 'Leader' type character and defines which traits make them a leader. This must be 100 words or more. 2. Post a small RP response in thread with the student's reaction to the assignment. This must be at least 200 words total 3. ??? Profit!
Username: Kaefaux Student Name: Reina Character Chosen: Commander Shepard, Mass Effect How are they a Leader?: Commander Jane Shepard of the Systems Alliance Navy is a Leader type character from the Mass Effect game series. She is a leader because she is stern about how she directs her crew members and others around her, but also understands they're going through really bad things. She talks to them a lot about working together as a group rather than working as individuals or just species working with themselves. Trying to protect the galaxy is hard, and it's not possible to do it alone. Shepard knows this, and she is willing to put herself in a lot of danger to make way for her friends and others to be safe and work together for a safer future. That is what makes Commander Shepard a good leader.
Response: A... leader? Reina had squinted at the board as the teacher had gone over the new assignment, biting her tongue a bit as she'd thought of what 'leaders' she really knew of. Was it lazy to go with one of the examples given? It was a character she actually knew, after all. Mostly from watching some of the older kids playing the games in the dorms. Clicking her claws against her desk, she began to think about what she'd even seen of the series.
Immediately, her nose scrunched up. She didn't like the guy Shepard. He wasn't as much fun to watch in the scenes as the girl Shepard. It was for that reason Reina mostly had watched playthroughs done by other kids wanting to play that Shepard. Eventually they'd worked through all the games, and even now her ears drooped as she thought of the… final ending.
But Shepard was a real leader! A real hero! Er. Heroine? But what made her a leader? Reina eyed her blank paper in front of her and whined softly. She just… was! She was strong and firm with people, but really kind and understanding of all the dangers and troubles her crew and random people were going through. She didn't back down from a fight, but was also willing to talk stuff out and find peaceful solutions—ok well, depending on who was playing the game, but still. The young grimm huffed and began to write her thoughts out, struggling here and there to make them… well, make sense.

Username: nasaiki Student Name: jin Character Chosen: the warden from dragon age How are they a Leader?: It all depends really on how the video gamer plays the warden but in one possible play through the warden is a good example of a leader. They aren’t afraid to make the tough choices that will lead to the better outcome for their people. They give support and listen to their followers helping them work through their problems with out loosing sight of their goal either. They care about their followers and generally help them to grow as characters along the way. They are also fair and don’t let prejudice get in the way of their choices. Sure they have some faults. They worry about if they are doing enough or will do enough. They worry about their people too and some times they can let victory go to their head but generally they try to learn from failures.
Response: (A minimum of 200 or more words please!)
Deep breaths, Jin could do this. It was a past time of hers to take notes about the funny things in her family and friend’s loves to possibly write future stories with. So she needed to work on making likeable characters and every story had a hero who was the leader right? Well every good story had a leader. She just needed to sit down and think of all the games she had played with her family. Think of who stood out as a good character that might not be overly used. Eventually she found one. Sure the character could be played as an absolute villain but Jin never played tne character that way. Jin played them heroically. Now was the harder part... analyzing. She tried to remember what made up a good character or a good leader and wrote down examples of what the warden did. It was her least favorite type of assignment. She hated analyzing things and finding symbolism and the like but the teacher had to at least give them a little bit of credit for trying and not being profound. Maybe next time it would be something like making haiku. She could write creatively. Still it was hopefully good to go.

Username: nasaiki Student Name: vanhi Character Chosen: captain Picard from Star Trek How are they a Leader?: Captain Picard makes a good leader because he protects his people not only his crew but the civilians who are on his ship as well. He listens to people and understands that communication is important to keep from developing misunderstandings. He tried to learn the language that others spoke in and learn their customs. He also understands when he is overwhelmed, he isn’t afraid to ask for help especially to protect those under his command. He doesn’t gamble needlessly with their lives. He also normally has a good moral head on his shoulders and isn’t afraid to go against what he is ordered to make sure the right thing is done.
Response: Vanhi was stuck, she wasn’t sure who do to that would make a good leader. Sure there were the obvious ones but she didn’t want to accidental run into having really similar ideas to some one else. So she pondered who to use. Looking at the examples that where given she remembered that one of the shows and characters listed had a sort of sequel and the captain in that show was also a pretty good leader. She tried to remember all the times she had sat down with her dad and older brother amatsu and the qualities of the character. The hard part was that the character was also a pretty good man morally as well so she had to find the traits that worked for leadership as well. Analyzing characters and the like wasn’t her stongest skill but she had to get. The teacher had to appreciate an attempt right? Eventually she found her stride and wrote what trait made Picard a good leader and how he used that trait. Soon enough she had enough words for the paper to be done and let out a sigh of relief. Language arts could be really hard some times but she was doing well she thought.

Username: nasaiki Student Name: Leto Original Story: Aladdin
Story: Master after master and they all generally wanted the same thing. Riches, power, titles and he had the power to give to them what ever their hearts desired. Well with in limitations, he couldn’t mess with free will. Free will was still the most powerful thing in the universe. He also couldn’t bring back people from the dead, or at least not like they had been originally. Their bodies rose but it well suffice to say wasn’t a pretty sight. Anything else was his to give. Three wishes. However Infiinte power was lonely and he longed to see the world out there, the world that he saw every time he was summoned. The lucky times where when it took a while for his master to make those three wishes and he could explore the world around him and see the changes.
Still it wasn’t enough, it was never enough and at the end he was always drawn back into his cramped prison, hoping that one day a master would ask what he would wish for. A master who would take one of their wishes and wish him free from these chains, free from this prison. Oh the things he would see. However eventually time past and he fell into a deep sleep. No master during that time, no treasured glimpses of the outside world until one day there was freedom. One day he was out of the lamp. His new master was smaller and poor looking but there was something that was different about him. He had asked what the genie would wish for then promised to use that last wish. Genie had to admit he liked the kid and perhaps the kid was telling the truth. Unlikely as who would give up a wish but the genie could always dream.

Story: The rose knew it’s life was finite, it’s sole purpose was to track the passage of time. To keep watch over a curse and the effects it had on the castle. However if it could have feelings it would have rooted for the poor man who angonized over it, the enchantress had shown up and seen a moment of a peson’s life and doomed them all with a curse. However what did it know it was supposed to be a gift, a means of payment, a time keeper. It had been neutral in the beginning just watching ever watching but it saw what this curse was doing.
After all No one came for years and petals dropped, the man it watched despaired and time moved towards its conclusion. The rose wished it could offer words of encouragement or even dare to offer words of advice and warning, something to change this horrid end he saw coming. Then one day there was a new face, a beautiful face and the rose wondered at the change. Wondered if maybe before it died and before the last petal fell if maybe it could see the man be happy. It had seen the man angry and melancholy and a slew of other emotions but happy or good emotions? Well it wished that maybe just once before it passed on.
However it was just a simple enchanted rose and what business did it have to dream a fools dream at that. It should have known as it fell and slipped away that dreaming wasn’t for it. No it had only seen sadness and despair and now the man was gone too but as it’s last petal fell it saw love, sad love but still a new emotion, one it had gone with out these ten years and it hoped as that last petal fell the same wish it always had.

Planet Description: The world was harsh, extremely hot and barren of all life. There was no atmosphere other than a thin one made of carbon and other elements from the vocanos. the ground was made out of ash, diamond and rock. The days where long about a hundred of our years but the nights where just as long. It was sweltering hot due to the volcanoes, the heat trapped by the giant ash clouds. The world was basically a harsh world where nothing lived on the surface of very long if at all. There was just too much radiation, too much ash, and not enough liquid.
However this wasn’t entirely the case for the whole of the planet, there was one type of creature. A creature that lived underground where it was safe from the explosions of fire, the poor air quality from the ash and the sweltering heat. A giant worm looking creature. It shifted through its underground caverns eating up the minerals and metals found in the crust of the planet, living a rather simple existence so far. Creating vast caverns and vast landscapes all below the hard and rocky surface never once really seeing the sun or moon’s rays.
Still there was once every two centuries the worm creature would lay their eggs in a cavern and then tunnel up the the surface to die and add their own rocky substance to the ground. Leaving one last haunting song that seem to screech across the weak winds, passing down its legacy for the next generation through its genes.

Planet Description: The planet is in the Goldilocks zone next to its sun who isn’t too big or too harsh, however it’s a young planet, still in its infancy and not quite cooled down. The surface is hot and sweltering, the skies are mostly clogged up with ash keeping the heat from its volcano’s trapped under the clouds. Erruptions occur daily clogging the air even more with hazardous ash, as the planet violently spews forth lava remelting and building up the land. Lightning flashes constantly due to the plumes of smoke and it can be said the mountains control the weather. Land continues moving and crashing together not quite settled into its longer formations. New islands start forming due to the influx of lava and a ring of fire as it could be called covers a good chunk of the planet.
Unfortunately The planet is mostly barren of life at this stage, the volcanoes too harsh and the planet still occasionally pummeled by asteroids. However the asteroids have started to bring water and water brings life. Harsh acidic rain has started to fall however life does survive in some form. You see the only forms of life are small and microscopic. They tend to be single celled organisms that flop around in the primordial soup that is beginning to form on the planet. Eventually it will merge with other organisms or start to mutate into more complicated forms of planet is well worth observation maybe a million years down the road to see what develops.

Username: Porcelain Pinch Student Name: Jane Original Story: Goldilocks and the three bears
Story: Jane twirled her pen around in her hand before biting the tip irritably. Story telling wasn't her strong suit. If it wasn't fact, wasn't scientific, and especially if it wasn't about rocks, she knew less than the average person, it seemed.
And there were no stories containing a rock person. Not one that she knew.. Her adoptive dad wasn't even that great at telling stories. Humming lowly, irritably, she scribbled down the title of a story that she knew fairly well. Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It had always annoyed her---why didn't Goldilocks just mind her own business? To make her own home out of leaves or find civilization elsewhere?
Stupid.
She knew that was a bad word but wrote it down anyway. Papa bear had the perfect point of view. ' "I come in, and someone has eaten my families food. We can't eat from those bowls. We can't eat that food. That porridge had taken a few hours to make and now it's---wasted. " He then walks into the other room. And..there it was. His son's chair--broken. "What burglar would do such a thing?!" his eyes showed anger and he frowned before stomping into the bedroom. It was too late to eat, too late to go to the chair store. Bed was the only way to end the day hopefully without anything else going wrong.
Nope. That wasn't happening. He stared at the girl who was in his freshlings bed and gave a roar. The dumb burglar was sleeping in his home! Who does that?! She woke up and ran at the scream. The end.'
She placed her pen down with a small clatter. That story was good enough.

Username: Porcelain Pinch Student Name: Ezekiel Original Story: Little red riding hood and the big bad wolf.
Story: Usually, Ezekiel would trash any assignment that he was given in language arts. Writing, poetry, reading, arty fartsy stuff all didn't really appeal to him. School didn't appeal to him. It was all trash.
Writing from a point of view from a "bad" character? Now that, he could do. A wicked smile came over Ezekiel's face as he wrote down the story he was thinking about. Someone he could relate to. He wasn't the type to actually eat another nightmare or daydream but ruining someone else's day? That made his day.
'First, the wolf tied up the grandma. She was frail, her bones were weak. He was sure he could hear a crack as he tied her up and threw her into the closet. He did not have to worry about her screaming because he put a rag in her mouth. It made her quiet, it was peaceful in her room when she was locked up. He was going to rest their for tonight instead of sleeping outside.
But then her granddaughter came in. He disguised himself in the grandma's clothes when there was a knock on the door. Which was good, because the girl did not have a clue when she walked in to see her beloved grandma. And didn't realize who he was at all---not until his lips peeled back and he tried to eat her.
The stupid huntsman came at her scream and ruined his day. And his life was over. ' He let his pen fall and reread his work. Better than anything else he had turned in.

Planet Description: ' This bright fun and child like land is filled with rays of sunshine and rarely a dreary dray. This planet is a freshling's dream. Most of the plants are made of candy. Mushrooms are either gummy like or their made out of chocolate with different flavors to each. Everything seems to be edible in this realm, even the buildings. The buildings are made out of something similar to crackers or gingerbread but more flavorful and never gets old. Each pathway plays it's own song as the residents of this plant walk across it. This isn't due to magic but due to what the rainbow pathway is made out of. Any "moss" that is seen is actually sugar coating on top of the gum like structure. Instead of fields of flowers there are fields of hard covered candies that are filled with chocolate or other fillings. Their trees can also be Popsicles, hard rigid and gives no protection from the rain. When it does rain--it rains sugar. Pure sugar. They may say that it's a requirement for a planet to have water--but this is not a case for this planet. There are no bodies of water, only bodies of carbonated drink. Sodas of all sorts of flavor to swim in. The sugar if it lands in the soda only gives more flavor.
Snow does come to the mountains, but it isn't in the form of snow. The white colored goo is actually icing. When someone takes a bite out of one of these grand mountains---they would probably reminisce about their favorite sugar cookies.'

Username: belloblossom Student Name: Aisling Character Chosen: Bluestar - Warriors by Erin Hunter How are they a Leader?: Often putting their Clanmates before themselves, Bluestar made plenty of sacrifices to see that ThunderClan remained in the paws of a fair leader, like giving up their kits to another Clan so that they could become deputy (and later leader) preventing an evil cat, Thistleclaw from becoming deputy instead. They were able to rally their Clan mates and inspire them for war, as well as being able to lead them through various other trials. While she may have had a spell of being unreliable, in the end, she was able to rally herself to make a sacrifice of her own life for the greater good, saving the future of her Clan by saving the one who would undoubtedly succeed her.
Response: Aisling wasn't quite how to describe a good leader. She looked at her caretakers and thought that they made good leaders, but she wasn't sure that would give her enough to talk about so, she tried to think of something else.
She finally thought of the series she'd read about feral vesper cats: Warriors. There was a good leader in that, she thought. Bluestar was a good leader, right? So, she wrote down what the leading vesper cat had done. How she gave up her chance to raise a family in order to come leader, so that an evil cat in the Clan wouldn't become the leader instead. She wrote about how many sacrifices Bluestar had to make and how it took a toll on her, but she kept pushing through for her friends and family that remained.
Being a leader is really hard. Aisling thought and wrote that down too. You have to take everybody's thoughts and needs into account. Nothing's black and white either, you have to consider every little thing. She sighed. She didn't think she could ever be a leader, not on the scale of Bluestar or anyone that her classmates were writing about. But... she thought she might be able to be a good friend, so maybe that would be good enough, for Aisling's standards, anyway.

Username: Aria Starstone Student Name: Niamh Original Story: The Emperor's New Clothes
Story: Niamh sighed and thought about the assignment, before she began to write. "The weaver brothers were tired, tired of having to weave ridiculous, over the top cloth for their emperor. Oh yes, it earned them a great deal of money, every time, but it also cost them a great deal in taxes, for how else did the extravagant b*****d pay for all these clothes he wore? The vain man was taxing the people of the kingdom ever more heavily, every year, as his need to buy new clothes all the time was proving to be a great burden on the royal household's budget, and instead of using their power to rein him in, the Royal Council was constantly enabling him... Because it gave them extra tax money to embezzle, everyone knew it.
Wilhelm, the first brother, was sitting, staring at the king parading outside in his most recent purchase, when an idea came to him. "Jacob! Jacob, come here!" He called out. His younger brother came running down the stairs from their little apartment, where they barely had the room for their two beds and tiny table. "What is it, Wilhelm? Has something terrible happened?" And at this moment, the two began to plan. The plan was to fix the problems of their homeland themselves, by stopping their Emperor. They disguised themselves as strangers, so that they would still have lives to lead after. It did not take long for their plot to come to fruition, and the Emperor commissioned the 'Elegant Weavers' to make the fabled Cloth the only those who were deserving could see. As soon as the "outfit" was ready, they let him leave... And disappeared, hiding their costumes under a bonfire, and setting it.
Thanks to a small child, who had the courage to tell everyone the truth, the emperor was publicly humiliated, and soon began to cut back, hiding away in shame in the palace. His councilors were all banished and replaced, for not having the courage to speak up, and wiser ones brought in, who cut back the taxation. And our little Weavers? The money they had conned from the emperor went into the community with care, helping to fix the problems that had been caused, while going back to living a simpler, but more successful, lives."
Niamh sighed and brought the finished story up to the teacher, then left, not knowing she had achieved an A.
