Woop, 57 reports done since the 13th!! But that's also kinda sad sad why so much spam

I may have to get some reporting done. Was informed that I am eligible for mod ship myself. Which is a surprise haha

That's pretty cool, do you plan on applying?

I'm just reporting when i see it, haven't decided if I want to aim higher.

Considering it. Mostly as a way of helping.

I'm experienced in admin so I don't think I'd have a problem assisting as needed. Plus I do like this place whee

That's awesome. My concerns would really be time. I'm on pretty often but most of the time it's while I'm at work which can get demanding sometimes. I'm just not sure what their expectations are and I would want to make sure I could do it before I told the,m yes. Wouldn't want to fall down on the job just for title

I lost another cat sad

Putty tat hasn't been home in days.

I have three cats, used to be five at one short period.

Cheif came home a while back but turned sick on his return, had to take him to the vet earlier this week. But Harley has now gone missing. He has 3 names. Proper name Harley, because his motor is always running. I dubbed him putty tat because he reminded me of Sylvester, but everyone else in the house calls him Tux or Tuxedo because he's black and white. Lame...

He has a white bow tie shape under his nose which makes him a bit unique. I hope he comes home soon. Cheif has also disappeared again! I saw him this afternoon but that lazy cat is usually like a piece of furniture in the house, so it's weird that he's not inside right now.

My other cat Peach, she's skittish and mostly anti-social, she's the only one here right now.

Ugh.. what is up with my cats lately!!

I have a cat named Ramsey. He keeps trying to get outside to climb trees but he gets himself stuck every time he climbs up. Not the brightest crayon in the box.

Are they... outside cats, or are they just that good at escaping? cat_question We don't let any of our cats outside, but our first cat managed to escape a few times somehow, but he never seemed to get very far (often only a few feet from the door) and was always in plain sight when farther out, so we could always get him back inside instantly.

Cat door, they were born in this house with the cat door available. They are all almost 3 years old come March and July so it's not like a new experience or anything.
I found Cheif lazing around in my fabric bin a couple hours ago. The original cat that gave us this big kitty family went missing too, last year

Wanna know something funny? I have a cat named Harley too haha.

Named him after Harley Davidson because of the fact that he sounds like he's revving when he eats.

Sounds like they're kind of indoor-outdoor cats if they have unrestricted access to outside. Since it sounds like there's a recurring problem, I feel I should mention cats that go outside (even just part-time) tend to have much shorter lifespans than indoor-only cats. Just by googling "average lifespan of an indoor outdoor cat," the first thing that comes up for me says:

Quote:
The expected lifespan of an indoor-outdoor cat will depend on several factors, including the type of neighborhood you live in and sheer luck. But, on average, cats who are allowed to roam outdoors often don't live to see age five. Cats who are always kept safely confined can live to be 18 to 20 years old.

It doesn't even matter if the cats are born outside, as there are some pretty depressing statistics on feral kittens:

Quote:
Some females have three litters each year, with a gestation period of approximately 65 days. Cats, like many wild animals, overproduce to ensure survival of the species, thus feral cats have many kittens. Kitten mortality rates are usually very high, over 50% among kittens.

That's one of the reasons why my mom and I went out of our way to capture the feral kittens I found at my previous jobs (they were outdoor jobs), and we personally adopted them and turned them indoor-only. They seem happy despite being indoor-only.

Edit: Forgot to mention that no matter how well-fed your cat is, outdoor cats frequently hunt and kill stuff when they go outside, such as birds and squirrels (among other species).

5 years, that's depressing to hear.

My cats are always catching something. This summer we had about 8 different garden snakes. I've found /rescued soooo many birds, mice and rabbits. Plenty of dead frogs, lizards and larger sized insects like dragonflies and grasshoppers.

We adopted an orange tabby kitten that was hanging around our house. He was so nice we called him Buddy. He was only with us for a couple months before I found him outside, gone.

I remember you saying you adopted a bunch of strays a while back. Have their personalities changed for the better?

I remember you saying you adopted a bunch of strays a while back. Have their personalities changed for the better?

Given the feral kitten statistics, I'm guessing their odds are even worse the younger they are.

I've heard a lot of stories and references to the fact that outdoor cats tend to wreak havoc on the local wildlife. They even put little cameras on some cats (some for entertainment, others for research) and found that a lot of cats (with no shortage of food) go out and just kill things, sometimes eating it, sometimes not. The majority aren't actually brought back to their owners (if they bring any at all). Even our cats like to kill and eat spiders, and tend to poke at the tiny ants we often have around our house (they're too small for them to try eating). They respond to our toys in a way that would probably end up killing it if it was a real animal.

Though cats are my go-to favorite animal, I also care about other animals, even those normally hated (mice, rats, snakes, bats, etc.), with only a handful of exceptions, such as certain insects like mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks.

It's hard to tell what our cats' personalities were like originally, since they wouldn't have been used to us when we first got them, and we didn't alternate between indoor and outdoor to compare. If we did let them out soon after getting them, they probably wouldn't come back.

Even now, at least three (maybe four) of them are still significantly timid, even if they're not afraid of us specifically. Despite their timidity, they obviously love us, often blinking at us slowly (an indication of trust, love, and/or happiness), and I think all of them do it with us. Interestingly, all of the timid cats are genetically related (a litter of four), while the other two are supposedly unrelated to any of the others (even though they almost seem related to each other somehow). The unrelated cats seem to be the least feral, even though one of them was caught far later than recommended (to the point of it being an inside joke that's she's "too feral to ever be adoptable"). cat_razz

It could be that feral cats do better going straight to the people intending to adopt them instead of having someone else fostering and socializing them first. It could also just be that with the most recent one, she saw me putting food and water out for her, including my using hot water when it got below freezing (but the water still froze solid after a couple of hours, even with little heat packets under it). cat_gonk

I currently have 3 indoor cats. Smokey is a scrawny grey calico that we took in after my Uncle died in 2008, She's approx. 11-12 years old. The other 2 are black and white male siblings from 2 litters that were born 2 days apart in the same bed by 2 different mothers (same father). Oreo is a tuxedo cat with odd markings on his nose, and appears to be slightly overweight when compared to his brother. Widget is mostly white with several areas of black markings, and has a -very- long [black] tail. They'll be 4 years old by the end of next month.

When they're not sleeping, the siblings are always chasing each other around the house. And Smokey is very feisty with the other two, especially around meal times when she gets "hangry". Smokey is our greeter, and meets everyone at the back door when they come over, while Oreo and Widget often run away and hide from our company. Smokey always comes up to me for attention after I wake up every day, and Widget often comes to me with great hopes of getting his daily head and face rubs. Oreo tends to keep his distance from everyone, watching us from across the room and blinks his eyes at us every now and then. They all are not very fond of being held, but will tolerate the attention for short periods with lots of purring. 4laugh

Oh, and Widget retrieves his favorite [stuffy-less] animal toys. He brings them back to me to toss across the room again, and again, and again, and ...

OMG my cats do not even seem that cool!
Best we ever get is an eff ton of "meow" talk from Putty Tat. He's super vocal. He's still nor come home emo
He was the nicest guy ever. The only kitten of the litter that would cuddle and purchase as much. Even better, he never used his claws on us, always gentle, which is why we decided to keep him.

My girly girl, Peach, despite being born in the same environment,is weirdly skittish. Make loud noises or attend to her too much and she will make an abrupt exit. She currently sleeps in my closet, if not someone elses... she has been out of character since the other two guys have not been as present....
