Long thought about it, thinking it was a Gaian month he could kind of see how the average person might not be able to navigate the maze so easily. Though Daemon was the one who truly understood how complicated the maze must be, especially since Ardan had longer hours than Gaia.
"That's quite the maze," he mused, "But anything that has underground passages should be complicated...."
He knew it was like that in the Southland, from what little he remembered of the palace there. It had been a while.

"Very true," Lalwen smiled in reply. "But Grandmother and Grandfather, when they designed the palace, did so because they had learned from the experience of others. If one can't find one's way about the palace, one can't assassinate specific people - at least, not easily."
Family history was more than family history after all. It was well known by many what had happened to the former queen of the Southland.

Long nodded at this, "Makes sense."
Only someone with a good memory and a lot of time on their hands could map a place like this, and that would take forever, and be quite dangerous if you got lost.
Or caught.
"And a good thing too," Daemon mused, "The palace above, the tunnels leading out somewhere down below and a portal hiding in the middle of all that."
Granted the portal room was spelled like a fortress. There had been great consideration taken that someone unwanted might come into this world, or worse yet someone unwanted might come into the main house. The manor was not as large as a palace so keeping potential harm locked into the portal room was useful.

"Of course," Lalwen added, her eyes bright, "it helps that almost everyone in the family is a Seer. It's very hard to surprise someone like that."
While she herself did not yet possess the gift, and it looked as though she never might, she knew from her sister, aunts and uncles, grandparents and mother what it was like to have the gift. While at times she was envious of them, she could also see how it could be a burden to them, and she did not allow herself to waste time wanting what she may never have.

The deeper they went into the maze, the cooler it became (somewhat). At least, the change was noticeable enough, as they found the underground temperatures more bearable than what was on the surface.
Eventually, they made it back to the tunnel where the portal was supposed to be kept.

As they went deeper underground, Lalwen finally took a torch from a wall bracket and carried it with her.
"There is no light past here," she murmured. "But the portal is just ahead. You do know how to activate it, of course, right?"

"I do," Daemon replied with a nod.
He had asked before visiting, and the concept wasn't that hard to get. Apparently nearly everyone in the family knew how to activate it, and the younger ones that were old enough were bright enough to understand how it was done by watching the adults.
"I could probably guess," Long murmured, "But Daemon knows, so we're good!"

"Excellent," Lalwen smiled. "I'll accompany you to the portal so that you've got light to see where you're going and what you're doing."
She walked ahead of them, holding the torch aloft to provide the greatest amount of light.

"Thank you," Daemon replied sincerely as they entered the dark tunnel.
He could kind of make out of the portal, it was magically charged and so it wasn't that hard to "see", so to speak.

Once they were past the false wall, all light other than from the torch in Lalwen's hand disappeared entirely. It was quite cool in there as well, cooler than Lalwen was accustomed to.
"And here you are," she murmured as they reached the portal. She turned to the two men and smiled. "On behalf of my entire family, I would like to thank you for your visit, and Grandmother instructed me to remind you that both of you are welcome to return any time you'd like, though of course she realizes that visits will be rare, if they are possible at all."

"Thank you though, we'll keep that in mind," Daemon replied with a soft smile, "Who knows, maybe we will."
"That would be great, maybe drag some more people through too," Long looked gleeful at that.
Probably because he thought his son worked too hard.

Lalwen giggled. "Please do. I know we're related to some of the people in your family, and most of us have never met them. But anyone else is welcome too, of course!"
The torchlight reflected in her dark eyes, making them sparkle even as she stopped giggling. "Anyways, it was lovely to meet you both. I hope to see you again someday. Safe trip."
And she waited for them to pass through the portal before she would leave with the only source of light.

"Someday," Daemon agreed before opening the portal door.
What was once wall pushed inward to reveal the portal room. Long, waved as he stepped through, and Daemon followed right after so he could close it.
