[Step 5 (-5 damage)]

They found themselves back in the koi gardens on the isle of Contest, lost and still trembling. In front of them there was a clansman, his face constantly twitching as if in pain. 'Last trial', he announced and waved a hand. Behind him three mirrors appeared, all reflecting tattered and beaten up fae. They realized that their cloak was torn, and hair turned into a mess, but they still managed to hold themselves upright and make a short bow. 'I am ready' they said. The clansman gave them a long and sad glance: 'No one is ever ready, child. It is a simple game, this one, and it is entirely luck-based. Tell me where is your reflection'.

Wylfenne could not understand the question. Wasn't it evident that it was their tired and solemn female-self face in each mirror? Then they thought it could not be that simple, even if we take out the part that normally faes to do have a reflection. They examined carefully each of the reflection, but could not spot any difference in any of the images. The reflections moved just as Wylfenne moved, just as normal reflections should do.

At last the fae gave up. They were too tired to try to analyze what was going on, too insecure after having lost at the previous location, and relying on their intuition, they prompted: 'That one!' - and showed the left mirror.

'Not bad', smiled the clansman. And the mirror broke into a thousand pieces, cutting Wylfenne's face and hands...

And here they were back in the entrance to the gardens of the Isle of COnquest, with all the students discussing all sorts of games they have been playing around the koi ponds. 'Have I been hallucinating all the time? Was there in the kumiko games some scent that made me fall into reverie and miss everything and mess it all up? Or was it my trial' and they looked up to meet Invictus's cold stare. They bowed curtly, insure as to what it all meant.

Ceil dashed up to the class, fresh incense in one hand, the other cluthing a Lock charm. She seemed winded and unaccustomed to running, though her chubby appearance would have said that much at first glance. She was lucky to not have missed class this time.

Step: One

As she came to a stop in the back of the group, her late arrival drew a glare from the teacher. Ceil's face fell. She felt small and despised for being late as she rubbed her chest. The running had made her sore. (-5 HP) .

Quote:
41-50 - If you have 35 Luck or higher IMMEDIATELY MOVE TO THE END OF THE ENTIRE COURSE (Skip the rest of the steps). Otherwise, -5 HP and roll again. You may sacrifice 5 luck to save your HP.

Student Year: Quest
HP: 25/30
Luck: 22 (incense 11 + charm 5)
Saves: 1
Step: one

Ciel smiled sweetly, trying to disarm the glare. She held up the charm in one hand and the incense in another as if to say "look! I made this! See? I had a reason to be late!"
Quote:
11-20 - If your luck is 35 or higher, you move on, but you lose 10 HP. If your luck is below 15, you have to sacrifice an additional 10 HP and roll again! (So 10 or less = -20 Extra Ouch!). You can choose to sacrifice 5 luck to save all your HP! All others move on unscathed.

Student Year: Quest
HP: 25/30

The teacher looked aside and continued the class. Disaster averted! Ciel breathed a much-needed sigh of relief, wondering what would come next. She had heard rumors of a test. Is that what this class was?

Quote:
91-99 - If your luck is above 30 +10 HP. Move on. All others must roll again. No HP Loss.

Student Year: Quest
HP: 25/30

Step: two

The teacher continued some long, mystical rant before the students. Poor Ceil started to tune it out a little. It reminded her of the endless rhetoric spouted by her elders, only with different metaphors. Blah blah, god this, blah blah fortune that.

Quote:
91-99 - If your luck is above 30 +10 HP. Move on. All others must roll again. No HP Loss.

Student Year: Quest

Step: two

Ceil is caught zoning out and is nudged HARD by a fellow student. "Don't push your luck" they whisper. Ciel snapped-to, but did not make eye contact. The student was already focused on the teacher again. (-10 HP, moving on).

Quote:
81-90 - If your luck is between 10 - 15, you move on unscathed! Higher or lower lose -10 HP All move on. You may choose to sacrifice 5 luck to save your HP.

Ouranos came to class today with a faint sense of foreboding. The boil-professor had led them away from their mats, on a brief walk to an unknown destination. Here it was, the final lesson-- wait, it wasn't a lesson? Oura stood behind his classmates, gazing blankly at the floating islands before him. As luck would have it, the final class was an obstacle course. Now Ouranos was neither very lucky, nor physically adept, which would explain the glimmer of concern behind his eyes. But no matter. He would go at his own pace as always... with a good healthy dose of "expecting the worst" and "bracing for disaster."

He took the first bridge to an island, where a Horseman sat behind an ornately draped table. Before him lay a spread of cards, face down. Ouranos took the chair across from him, fixing the Horseman with his blank stare.

"Choose five cards from the deck. Only luck shall defeat my hand." The horseman waved airily at the deck of cards beside him.

So cards it was going to be. Ouranos slid the top five cards from the deck, sending a silent prayer to the fates and prophets. His opponent gave a nod, picking up his own cards. Together, student and Horseman laid their cards face-up on the table.

Ouranos' hand showed a 9, 9, 9, 7, A. Three of a kind. The Horseman's showed 10, 10, 2, 2, 8... two pair. The boil's tense expression relaxed, as his opponent put up his hands in defeat. Seems like luck was on his side.... for now.

On the second island, Ouranos found no table, merely a vast stretch of green grass. The Horseman there was all smiles, looking quite mischievous indeed; he beckoned Oura forward to three wooden barrels, identical in size and shape. The boil approached them slowly, his manner wary.

"Ho, ho, ho! Here sits three mysterious containers. What could they hold? Well, I'll tell you what they hold!"

The Horseman hopped nimbly from behind one barrel to the next. "One container holds great fortune! Good for you! The other two... well, I cannot say quite the same for them." His eyes twinkled. "Your task is to bravely plunge your hand into the barrel of Fortune, and retrieve the golden fish! But if you choose the wrong barrel... there may be a surprise lurking there for you. Ho ho ho!"

After this introduction, Ouranos looked a little paler than he normally did. The boil turned from barrel to barrel, staring at each so intensely that one would think he had x-ray vision. But it was no use. They were all exactly the same...

Finally, Ouranos gave up his futile observations. He gingerly dipped his hand into the third barrel.... gold fish, gold fish, would he get lucky?!

All he got was a sharp, painful bite from the unknown resident. Wincing and jerking his hand out, Ouranos looked sorrowfully at the Horseman... who was reeling about in laughter.

Ouranos took the next bridge to his third challenge, nursing his swollen hand. To his relief, this island's task seemed much less likely to hurt. He faced a silk-draped table, an elegant Horsewoman standing behind it. On the table before her sat five delicate lotuses, floating in separate bowls of water.

Oura observed the flowers with silent interest. All five were identically white in color. "One of these lotuses possesses the purest spirit," said the Horsewoman, her voice dreamy. "When I douse them all in sacred water," --she raised a porcelain pitcher in one hand-- "...Only one will retain its pure white shade. But which one? Use your intuition and tell me."

Which lotus was the purest...? Ouranos had no idea in the slightest. But perhaps he could give his best guess. He looked from one to the other, pondering for a time. Finally, without words, Oura pointed to the last flower.

The Horsewoman smiled, then gently poured the water on each lotus, one by one. The first slowly turned pink. The second and third, blue. The fourth held its white shade... then, gradually, became purple. The final lotus remained white... the purest amongst the rest. Ouranos' luck had returned, if only for this round.

Ouranos headed to the fourth island, feeling slightly more hopeful. His gaze fell upon a massive, elaborate wheel, made of marble and jade. It was even taller than he was! Golden symbols in a language he couldn't read ran around its border.

The Horseman next to the wheel dipped a polite bow. Ouranos returned it just as politely (seems like his Etiquette training had paid off). "The wheel of fortune turns, and your fate with it. You shall make two choices."

"Even or odd?" The Horseman gestured to the foreign symbols; they were numbers, apparently. "Marble or jade?" His fingers brushed the area behind each number, which alternated between the two materials, white or green.

As usual, Ouranos took awhile to ponder his choices. Finally, he made a decision. "Even..... and jade."

The Horseman smiled graciously, then turned to the wheel. With a shout, he gave it a heave-- and it rattled to life, turning around and around with a loud clatter. Ouranos watched it spin, as if his life were flashing before his eyes, a blur of gold and green. Slowly, the spinning began to cease. Oura unconsciously held his breath as the pointer ticked towards its final destination...

The number it stopped on, he could not tell whether it was odd or even. But... the material behind it was marble. Ouranos felt his spirits sink.

"You have a second chance," said the Horseman lightly, and Oura looked up at him bemusedly. "Though your color was wrong, your number was correct-- it was even. I will spin for you once more."

Luck, stay with me, thought Oura distantly as the Horseman gave the wheel another heave...

The wheel spun around and around for the second time, rattling noisily. Ouranos' stare was a hundred times more intense than usual. Would his choices turn out to be correct this time...? It was only a matter of seconds before he'd know.

The wheel began to slow, its pointer dancing across the numbers, gradually coming to its final destination...

Oura's heart leaped, as the pointer finally stopped on a jade tile. But what about the number? Was it even, or odd? The boil looked expectantly at the Horseman........ who turned to meet his gaze..... then smiled.

"It is an even number. Even, and jade. It seems the lady of luck has blessed the wheel for you this time." Ouranos had passed!

Oura approached the final island, feeling as if an ominous cloud hung over his head. He had managed to get through the first four challenges with no major incident (save for a painfully bitten hand). Was it about time for him to make a major blunder somewhere?

It looked as if his uneasy premonitions were about to come true. Near the middle of the island, Ouranos came across a small, serene lake... and suspended above it, reachable by a climbing a tall tree, was a rickety wooden bridge. Oura swallowed, feeling his heart fall to his stomach.

The thought of turning on his heel and leaving quickly had barely crossed his mind, when the Horsewoman by the lake got to her feet. "Welcome. Your final test awaits," she said sternly, looking as if she'd understood his silent wishes to escape. She motioned towards the bridge above the lake, which now was rocking gently to and fro in the wind.

"You will cross the Lake of Tranquility. The bridge spans between two trees-- you'll find ladders on each tree to facilitate your ascent. If luck and fortune rides with you, you shall choose the correct steps when crossing the bridge... make one wrong move, and plunge into the waters below. It is crucial to think and gauge wisely before you move.

"I will see you on the other side," she concluded with a sharp nod.

Ouranos stayed frozen in his spot for a good number of minutes, watching the Horsewoman walk to the far side of the lake. Finally, his legs began to move-- they were weak as jello. In a dreamy haze, Oura began to climb the ladder up the first tree. What had he gotten himself in to...?!

He was near the top of the tree now. The wind whistled by his ears-- his eyes were now level with the start of the bridge. Ouranos watched it sway and heave in the wind, and was so distracted that his foot missed a step climbing up... he slipped and fell a couple feet. Ow!! Let's try that again...

He'd finally made his way up the ladder, and taken his first shaky step onto the bridge. Up here the wind was much stronger, tossing the wooden structure from side to side... Ouranos felt faint. He tried not to look down at the silvery lake beneath him.

There were many gaps in the planks, and some of them were probably rotten, though he couldn't tell by sight. They were like booby traps... if he chose the wrong planks to walk on and they broke, he'd surely fall into the lake. Though it wasn't that far and he wouldn't die, it'd definitely be painful (and cold).

Ouranos gulped down another shaky breath, putting one foot ahead of the other. The wind whipped across his hair, blinding his vision temporarily; he stumbled, and stepped into empty air. He'd missed a plank! With a cry, Oura grabbed onto anything he could find, dangling precariously... oops. He'd have to try this again, and with much more caution...

Ciel sighed to herself. "You're right" she muttered, then she started paying attention to the teacher. Anytnig worth getting hurt over had to be important, right?

"Hotei, also known as Budai is the fat and happy god of abundance and good health.", the teacher began.

The teacher pantomimed the story as it was told, complete with holding up an imaginary bag.

As slowly as the idea has dawned to Ceil, another took it's place. "How am I supposed to do a class that is made of nothing! I don't get it! This is all pointless!" Ceil cried, drawing the glares of those around her.

Suddenly she knew why they said not to push her luck. The room almost seemed to dim with the combined ire of the entire group upon her. (-5 luck)

Ceil rubbed her forehead, ignoring the glares of those around her. A nasty headache similar to a brain freeze was setting in, leaving a warm-tingly feeling along with the pain. She smiled a little, her smile not the nervous one from before. Despite the growing pain, she felt a growing awareness as well, even if the words did not come at first.

When the realization hit, Ceil blinked for a few moments. It was like someone turned on a switch. Having finished the class, she happily walked away, still rubbing her head. "Owww....." she said, smiling broadly.

Somewhere among the students, someone muttered how lucky Ciel was to have finished and gotten away. He had been in that class for hours still hadn't figured out the meaning....

Bongani was not feeling lucky as he stared at the pile of go fish cards in front of him. Matching, right. He could do this. As he held his five cards in a death grip, his glanced up at his partner, pretending he wasn't starting to sweat a bit. He glanced to his cards again, the big yellow fish in the middle taunting him with its big yellow smile and bulbous eyes. Again, Bongani's gazed swiveled to his opponent, his stress levels rising. He just had to match a few more cards, then he'd be in the clear. If he could we, he'd be moving on.

"Ah, do you have any...yellow fish?" Bongani's voice was tight as he bore holes into the other player's cards with his intense stare. He bit his lip raw as the tense silence continued, the b*****d in front of him obviously relishing in holding out his answer for as long as he could. Finally, FINALLY, the horseman leaned over with a toothy grin. Pushing his hair from his face, the horseman opened his mouth while Bongani held his breath only to have his worst fears revealed.

"Go fish," the horseman all but chirped cheerfully.

"Dammit!" Bon cried, snatching another card from the pile.

And so, the game continued...

The game of go fish had been challenging, but someone Bongani had managed to overcome the terror that was matching brightly colored fish. The next challenges of luck were equally hard, if not even more terrifying. Having to thrust his hand into an unknown group of jars was NOT something that he'd been looking forward to, nor was having to endure bingo among the more...established of the four clans denizens. Somehow though, Bongani managed to win everything without being scathed. Sure, he might have managed to won, but it was by the skin of his teeth. He gained nothing from any of these challenges other than a bit of confidence for the next game.

Bone throwing had been much easier than all the other previous games and while Bon was up against three others in the game of luck, he managed to out throw them all. He liked to thank his skill to all the bones he'd collected from the graveyard from unsuspecting zombies. When he found an undesirable bone, he would just toss it away. It was all in the wrist, yes. Bongani would definitely not give up his midnight wanderings now.
