As far as I know, it's about a group of mercenaries. And Griffith has a really creepy necklace.

Well ya he did get most of the anime in a nutshell. It is a shonen anime about a group of up and coming mercs who find them in the middle of a war thats been going on for 100 years. The leader Griffith has a Behelit, the necklace, which according to a fortune teller it will help him get to his goal, which is to rule a country or a nation or something of the sort. To help him further get to his dream he forms "The Band of the Hawk." And eventually mets Guts who is the true main character. Things go one way and anther. Thats all I'll give for now. Don't want to ruin it. Its a very dark story but still enjoyable. However it has the biggest cliffhanger in anime history. Why because it ends about mybe a 1/4 of the way. The manga is still going. This guy kind of explains it in a fun comedical way. Outside the Otaku Berserk

The first part is about a group of mercenaries. After a certain major event, it's pretty much the apocalypse all after that.
