Madison took a deep breath - or tried to, at least. The chaotic atmosphere was absolutely not relaxing. She couldn't find her concentration, her focus. There just wasn't enough time, enough of a stillness to snatch out from between roars and other hideous, awful noises from the approaching horde.

Yet she was determined to try. She could stand her ground long enough to shoot again, and again... when she was out of bullets, she would run, but not before. She promised herself that, silently. She would do her best.

Swallowing hard, Madison aimed again and fired, but the shot went wild once more.

Davey edged closer to Hanna and Before. Even if the motor-mouth was loud and brash and often annoying, Davey wasn't about to suggest leaving him to fend for himself. Besides, Before was one of the only people Davey really knew out here, even if it was for all the wrong reasons. He'd give the guy another chance when they got out of this.

"Can you manage?" he asked Hanna. If Before needed to be carried, she might be in trouble. He'd offer to swap, but he wasn't sure if the girl had any bullets left in the gun she'd been using.

Instead, Davey stood between the other two Hunter-trainees and the oncoming mob. "I'll cover you, if you can get him out of here..."

One of the monsters surged forward, lured by the prospect of fallen prey. Winding up, Davey let fly at it's head. It glanced off the creature, only the faintest of blows. It wouldn't take long before it tried again...

Knowing that the mob wouldn't be held back for much longer, Davey moved closer to the pink-haired girl who was also covering Hanna and Before. He made sure to stay just out of swinging range, for her sake - with his aim today, you'd think he'd lost an eye not an arm.

"We should start backing up," he said. It was a suggestion in his mind, but it just didn't seem to come out of his mouth that way. Story of his life, really. "I don't know about you, but I don't think we can keep holding them off and I'd like as little distance between us and the bunker as possible when that time comes."

He had Gale, much more securely now that Before was taken off of his hands. "Thanks." He gave Hanna a small, awkward smile despite her brisk behavior and despite the fact they might all by mauled to death by a monster horde any second.

"Ready Gale? We're making a break for it." It was kind of lucky that Gale was so small. Though not known as a strong guy, Bix was able to suck it up, lift the trainee off of his feet, and run for the building. He stumbled once, pausing to throw only one backward glance but he was quick to recover and he got them to the building relatively unscathed.

His first still moment punctuated the moment with a sneeze! gonk

Madison jumped a little bit, nearly squeezing the trigger by mistake - she hadn't expected a human voice, addressing her, quite so close! "Y-yeah," she agreed, her voice a bit shaky, and she shuffled slowly backwards, not lifting her feet off the ground lest she trip. Tripping was the last thing she needed right now.

But now she was being watched. She couldn't screw this one up! Madison aimed slowly, carefully... and fired. The abomination she'd aimed at screeled and threw its head back, one long-fingered hand rising to clutch at its face as it slowed.

It was one.

Of many.

"Y-yeah," she repeated, with a gulp. "I don't think, like, we can hold them off... either..."

Before was freaking out, which was not exactly a good thing. But Gale didn't have time to try and help his teammate. It was hard enough just standing upright with his leg the way it was; attempting to walk or go help Before would be next to impossible. Not to mention Gale was shorter than practically everyone in the group.

Could I be any more damn useless? he thought, grinding his teeth together in frustration, his hand gripping Bix's shoulder for support. His shot had freed the purple haired girl, yes, but at the same time that was the only thing he had done that was sort of useful.

"You're in bad shape."

The voice came from somewhere to Gale's right. He blinked upwards, slightly dizzy with pain, trying to figure out who was speaking to him. It was one of the older boys, not Before or that Robert dude who liked to be loud or that Jeremy guy that Boss was protective of. It was the guy with the reddish hair, the one whose name had escaped the recesses of Gale's mind. Something with a J...Joseph..? Jackson..?

Jordan. That's it.

...I think.

"What're you talking about, I feel great," Gale replied, managing to get a wry grin on his face, though it rapidly shifted to an expression of agony as the older boy pressed the bandages against his raw, burned leg. Pain shot through his veins, hot and searing, but he managed - just barely - to reign in the desire to let out a shout. Gritting his teeth, Gale nodded to Jordan.

"Thanks, man," he said gratefully. "I 'preciate that."

There was no time for small talk. A dark haired girl whose name Gale thought might be Hanna had darted up, slipping an arm around Before's waist, leaving Bix free to help Gale.

Who, in fact, didn't really want to leave yet.

"W-wait!" he cried out, struggling even as the older boy hauled him off of his feet. "I can still fight, I can still help - "

Apparently all arguments were useless - along with his leg. Gale was forced to resign himself to letting Bix half carry, half drag him towards safety.

Gunshots. Screams. Odd, wiggly bits reaching out to attack the other hunters. Robert's hit over the head (with his own damn bat, mind you) had the world sounding muffled, and moving in slow motion. His bat was swinging wildly, but even that seemed sluggish and half-assed.

Damn, but his head throbbed. He rubbed it with one hand, wincing as he felt a welt - and one of his eyes closed. The other one, still open, focused on the sight before him.

Petra.

Blood.

The world lurched back into forward motion as everything cleared, and Robert's adrenaline kicked in.

"OH HELL NO, MOTHER ********." He screamed, taking one big step forward and scooping Petra up into his arms. He shifted her into one arm, and used the other one to flip the monster off.

"YOU MAY CONTINUE TO ROT IN HELL BEFORE I LET YOU TOUCH MY PETRA." He spat at the thing, before backtracking to the retreat. He wanted to rip the monster with his bare hands, but he'd been given an order. Besides, Petra's safety was more important than the rage that made his face turn red.

Behind them, Bix carried Before off to safety. Davey breathed a little easier knowing that the injured party was gone. The rest of them were able-bodied and could make a break for safety whenever they deemed fit.

Davey did a double-take at the pink-haired girl. The one who kept saying 'like' all the time... He remembered her from the classroom. Back there, he'd written her off as a useless teenager, one of those airheads only interested in shopping and gossip. And yet here she was, staying back on the front lines while others ran. He doubted she'd seen any kind of battle before, either, at least not outside of the test where they hadn't exactly been themselves.

He was impressed. (And just a little ashamed of himself for judging so quickly on appearances.)

Davey matched his steps to hers, staying close by her side as they slowly followed Bix and Before, guarding their backs. "Davey," he said abruptly. "And you?"

He hadn't been paying the most attention to names during the intro period. He'd remember this girl, this moment, a teenager standing her ground even while her voice and hands shook. If he was ever tempted to judge the others as kids based solely on how they looked or how they spoke, he had this girl as proof that he could be wrong. The least he could do was remember her name, rather than always think 'that girl'.

While she clipped a monster, Davey swung at one that slipped past and lunged for the girl. It was a decent hit - for a one-armed guy. He was finally getting the hang of it, right when it was almost time to beat a strategic retreat.

"Alright, I think I'm done," he said, eyeing the number of creatures that were breaking free of the pack. Very soon it wouldn't be individual strikes, but a tidal wave of the bastards, breaking over their heads and swallowing them up entirely. "Ready on three?"

Davey approached her, and Hanna was glad for it. The more people near her the better. It made her feel safe to have those members around her, people who were on her side, regardless of her personal feelings. Even Before for all his whimpering was an ally. And right now, she needed help.

With a heave, Hanna attempted to lift Before so that they could retreat to the brick building. Something about the weapon and the weight did not come together. Hanna tried to yank him backward, but instead, she fell too, breath heaving out of her.

On the ground, Hanna felt weak, even though she hadn't taken a true wound. She clutched at her side. "s**t," she swore again. "We have to get out of here!" Now it looked like Hanna needed help.

"We don't have time for this," Scarlett hissed under her breath, watching as people tried and failed to save the injured allies around them. Her eyes watched Hanna intensely as she moved away from the safety their group provided and her whole body tensed where she stood next to Scott, panic evident in her eyes.

Hanna failed.

Panic quickly faded and was replaced with a surge of adrenaline. The horror on her face twisted into determination and the scared, fish-out-of-water Scarlett was replaced with the level-headed leader she always dreamed she could be. Only this time, she wasn't leading employees in a grocery store.

"Scott, help that guy that Hanna was trying to rescue," her voice was a no-nonsense order - she didn't even consider for one second that he might not listen to her. Before he could answer, or argue if he felt inclined to disagree, she was twisting through the milling bodies and aiming right for her fallen comrade.

"Get up, Hanna." She reached down and grabbed the smaller figure by her elbows and forced her to drape one arm over her taller shoulders, then hunched over and hooked her arm around Hanna's torso. She wasn't sure what was wrong with her, or why she had toppled over, but Scarlett had enough energy left for the both of them.

With one last, pointed look at Scott, she pulled Hanna into a brisk jog at her side and headed straight for the shelter the building in the distance provided. She just hoped she wasn't wrong about it.

Before hadn't realized when he lost hold of Jeremy. Maybe it had happened between him falling to the ground and suddenly getting yelled at by everyone and everything. He didn't offer any excuses, just a frustrated and pained snarl, which sounded more like a toad croaking. But he did manage to hear someone scream at him to pick up a gun and shoot with it.

Was that really such a good idea? What with him being one of the three ******** blind mice at the moment. Fine then! >XCCCC He had shoved his gun into his pants when the bats came out (had he remembered to put the safety on?) and haphazardly retrieved it.

When he felt bandages being wrapped around his wounded face, he almost fired out in reflex. It was only because he recognized the person patching him up was Bix did he manage to check himself. That and he kept his finger off the ******** trigger. "Th-thanks dude," he stammered weakly, feeling very much like he wanted to crawl under a rock and die in shame. Bad enough he had to bother Boss and Jeremy, now even Bix, and this other girl had tried to get his a** to safety. <******** it, maybe they should just leave him. Unfortunately, Hanna had other plans and tried to lift him, despite their size. And while the attempt at retreating failed, it did result in getting Before to regain his senses. Just his senses, not his sight, the bandages helped but they weren't a miracle cure. He felt something grab at his injured leg, something with a bony hand, and when kicking didn't work, Before started blindly jabbing his gun in the general direction of his assailant, and when the muzzle sunk into rotting flesh, the panicky trainee fired.

"I SAID NO BAD TOUCH!!!" He yelled, just as Scarlett left with Hanna for the shack. Oh s**t, Before was now disoriented and completely blind of his surroundings. "... I am so ******** aren't I?" he muttered to himself.

Marcus wasn't looking back, he was looking forward. The shack was were a majority were going, and he wasn't about to die a hero. "Good girl." He gave Cass a pat on the head and went to the shack. Hey, if it was a death trap it might just give him time for that cliche one make out right?

Ah, clockwork. The sight of Robert barreling across the blood soaked battlefield to save Petra, to what Scott could only assume was the swell of epic orchestral music playing in his head, was as much of a scientific absolute as the rotation of the earth and rise of the tides. There had to be some sort of formula that dictated the whole thing, where x was how much danger Petra was in, y was the number of Robert’s proclamations of undying devotion, and z was to what degree their love touched everyone’s hearts.

Scott lifted his bat, ready to fall back to the building. He only managed a single step before Scarlett’s voice stopped him short, which seemed unwise to him considering the horde of bloodthirsty creatures at his back.

“Wait, what?”

Brow furrowed, having lost track of Hanna amidst all the shrieking and acts of derring-do and such. What the hell was she doing sticking her neck out like that? He knew he couldn’t trust a girl who laughed like her, and now he was stuck with… with…

“I SAID NO BAD TOUCH!”

Scott clenched his teeth, trying his hardest to bore his hatred through the backs of Hanna and Scarlett’s retreating forms. He started to move forward, no ounce of him desiring to risk his life for any of his fellow trainees, let alone the most spastic and prone to crying. But he could again only manage a single step before pausing, hesitating, trying to quell the pang of pity that had him suddenly running to help Before.

“Get up,” Scott yelled, his frustration betraying his attempt to motivate the hopeless teen. Surprisingly, this plan failed to move him, leaving Scott to try and think of something else.

Oh s**t! Tika wasn't about to stay here for much longer. s**t was getting way to real right now and the teen wasn't about to find out what would happen to her if she stayed. She was running now for the shelter and keeping a pretty steady pace.

Maybe she hadn't done the bravest thing but Tika was not about to give her life for people she didn't even know to well.

Before had sunk to his knees after shooting the thing that had grabbed hold of his injured leg. Ichor and flecks of rotting flesh had spattered on the bandages Bix had wrapped around the easily flustered trainee, the blackened, exposed flesh on his foot smarting from the sudden movement and effort. He didn't know where the shack was, or where the others had gone, so it was hopefully understandable that he was... jumpy to say the least. So when Scott tried to save the wounded trainee, Before nearly aimed his gun at the older Hunter. (And by nearly, read: so way off the mark, as in completely no where near the older Hunter.)

The coherent yelling made Before figure out he wasn't being attacked by one of the horde. Good. That was good! "J-just point me where to go," he stammered, uncaring how pathetic he looked, crouched on the ground, ready to bolt.

"GET UP." Scott was louder this time, tone more forceful, bat motioning toward the building in the distance. As hard as he tried to look at Before, his gaze kept shifting back to the creatures rapidly closing in, watching in horror as rows of gnashing teeth rippled across unnatural parts of their body. His mind screamed in protest, willing his feet to move, to leave behind someone he was pretty certain could move on his own.
