The trainer of each type to score more points won an spot...
Let´s say, there´s two water type trainers... one has 7 points and the other has 6... the one with 7 points wins the spot...
Funny data: if there´s another trainer with another type, let´s say flying, even if he has less points... let´s say 4 points... he wins the spot for flying... there must be 8 gyms... and their types must be different from each other.
The top 8 with different types wins a spot.

X Dark Serge X Based on my experience, this would be a Robin type tournament... you battle EVERY other trainer who signed up to get points.
The trainer of each type to score more points won an spot...

The top 8 with different types wins a spot. Oh! So there is an 8 gym cap! Hmm, the thing is, what if fewer people try out for a certain type? Those people who competed to be the gym leader for that type would have a disadvantage since there were fewer people to gain points from beating! would they just be less likely to have a spot as a gym leader at all? Assuming that there are more than 8 types that are being competed for that is!
If you´re going to steel, you´ll be facing any grass, ice, ground, fire, fighting, dark type trainers that registered.
You and I will be fighting with steel types... but if you score more points than me, you´ll be the gym leader, I won´t get ANY spot at all.

RisingDarkness9 Scrapjack This wasn't clear in the op, so i guess ill ask it now - is the tourney to decide who are gym leaders monotype? Also, can people go for Elite 4 spots? It isnt deciding who will get what type, if that is what you meant! You get to choose which type you want! There are going to be as many different gyms as people try out for the different types! But you can only use pokemon with that type! So its just to become a mono type gym leader! But as of last I have heard for the elite 4, there wasnt enough activity, much less people who got all the gym badges in the old wifi gym league, so there wasnt much point of making an elite 4 yet! I think if this new gym league gets more popular than the last, it will be considered to make an elite 4! As of now, no, you cant go for an elite 4 spot though! Back when I was a gym leader I dont think anyone got all 8 badges xD but yeah, basically what you say is true
