92 vs. 35*2 -> 92 vs. 70 -> 48% to notice hidden chop stick. (Not sure if I did this correctly but I think I'm good.)

What a day this was turning out to be. One minute three strangers are arguing between one another, the next they all were chomping down some lunch at the same table together, asking what each others goals were. Not to mention, two of the three literally bumped into each other signing up to become ninja. Always weird how life worked out, wasn't it?

"Oh right, I suck at this. My name is Kaito Arata. Kaito or Kai for short, whatever works best for you fellas." At this point Sai took lead in the conversation, asking the both of them what their intentions were. "Eh? Guess we're getting right to the point." 'Twas understandable at the very least. Who really wanted to team up with someone who didn't have real aspiration to do anything with his life. Kaito got the feeling this Sai fellow, wasn't looking for the run of the mill type person either. Like you didn't wanna give him a lack luster answer of 'not really sure, just kind of wanting to see where life takes me' without expecting him to reject you. Luckily, Kaito had goals in place for himself.

Hajime naturally responded first, Sai did direct the conversation more towards him with the 'alarming' statement. Now that Kaito did get to thinking about it, the situation was a little weird to say the least. His rebuttal to the statement sounded pretty honest and believable. The monk finished his statement, which meant it was his turn to take lead. The sobering man scarfed another one of his rolls down, catching Sai slide a pair of chop sticks into the sleeve of his left arm. What a weird gesture, Kaito couldn't help but wonder if this was some sort of test or Sai genuinely just wanted to snatch a pair of chop sticks for one reason or another. "So yeah, my intentions are simple to say the least. Although I haven't been in this city for a few years or so, one day, I'd like to become the Hokage." Sipping on some water, he'd continue. "I get it, probably looks pretty strange how a guy who moved away from his home for so long, intends to lead a village he's not even taken a step in since he was fourteen. But honestly, that's just been my dream since I was a child. Gotta follow your dreams, or some sappy crap like that, right?" Kaito chuckled, chomping on another roll. It almost felt embarrassing to say that, being a nineteen year old just freshly tagged as a genin. That wouldn't stop the process though, just gotta keep working.

The mystery still stood tall, why the chopsticks? Did he call him out, or let it be? Just at that very moment the monk offered a roll to the chopstick bandit. "Hrm... He must have noticed too... Guess we'll see how this plays out." Kaito leaned back a bit, crossing his arms. "Guess we earned the right the same question. What's your intentions Sai?"

(Posting from my phone.)

'Failure.' The word rang through his head with stunning force. 'My chances here slim, I'm still no where near ready.' The man did not so much as glance in the sobering man's way as he spoke, instead Sai's eyes kept with the monks until he finally grinned and twirled to reveal the chopstick that the monk already knew he had. "So you've said, monk." With a lazy toss, he discarded the chopstick and pulled to himself a glass and filled it with water, holding it slightly to his lips as he continued to peer at the monk across from him.

"Fate is a curious thing. Some are fated to succeed where others are to fail. In this occupation that's the same as saying the gods have already decided you are dead before you even had a chance. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the idea of following one's fate."

Without drinking, Sai placed his glass back down on the table, glancing for the first time back at their other companion. "hmm." The man had seen stranger things happen. Countries taken over, controlled, traded and destroyed over the whims of monsters that had never previously even stepped into them. "That's a nice dream you got there. Me?" For a moment he paused, his focus on the hand he still had gripped on the glass. Nothing happened. No violent current of chakra, no influx of strength. There was nothing in this body. In him. "Well, I was toying at the idea of stabbing our monk in the eye with that chopstick but alas I'm not quite as agile as I'd like to think I am. I probably wouldn't last long in a brawl either, shame." he said with flippant regard as he leaned back finally let his attention once more to the waitress, following her movements around the restaurant.

It was a cruel realization he had come to but he was incapable of defending himself, he truly had been brought down to the level of the common man. He could feel something twist inside of him and grow cold at the thought. Perhaps it was his ego, perhaps something more intimate to his identity but without he no longer felt the need for caution. Like the monk and all others, he was at the mercy of the whims of Fate and he was likely never to be in control ever again. His life was forfeit to the very game he used to oversee. 'Oh how the irony never ends.'

(Also, from a phone.)

Stabbing someone in the eye with chopsticks. Wowza. At least he finally figured out the strange fellows intention with the small wooden utensils. So, this conversation basically turned back to where he for sure thought this conversation was leading. The whole 'nice guy' was cool and all, but at first glance it didn't seem like any of these three deserved to be in that category.
"Well, uh... Cool." Kaito was really at a loss of words. It wasn't the fact he was nervous by any means, it was more of an awkward feel than anything else. "So yeah, why did you wanna go all serial killer on us again? The boy scratched his head, shoving his last roll into his mouth. At this point, this conversation wasn't really his to be having. Maybe he was joking or something, either way he seemed a little too serious about it. No awkward laugh afterwords, no 'just kidding', pretty weird to say the least.

The genin leaned back in his chair as well, cracking his back then leaned forward resting his head against his right palm. Kaito was awaiting the monk's response. "Man. I hope these guys don't get into a fight here... I don't wanna get kicked out of my favorite restaurant my first day back in town damnit!" Letting out a big sigh, he'd slurp down the rest of his water while waiting for the next move. More importantly, should he order dessert?

Hajime put down the platter, now that the imminent threat was gone. "Ah, so this is how Shinobi act. Friendly in one moment, backstabbing in the next. I will remember this lesson, Sai-San." He offered Kaito a wave of dismissal, "No need to worry, Kaito-San. I won't start a fight. As it were, I'm something of a pacifist." Hajime placed one of the rolls into his mouth and chewed quietly. Then, he swallowed.

"In return for that free lesson, I will offer my own- if only to quell your worry about Fate. Kaito-San, you seem to know the surrounding lands well- perhaps you've heard the Fable of the Three Losers? In some principalities, they call it the Fable of the Gorilla, the Weasel, and the Fox- so you may have heard it called that too."

"The Fable begins with three animals in the Forest. The first was a large, dark-haired Gorilla. It was fast and strong, and always tried its hardest in everything it did. The Weasel was sleek and thin, sneaky and devious, and was a born hunter. The last of the animals was a Fox who was orphaned at a young age, and had never been taught to hunt. Now- one day the three animals decided that they'd have a competition- to see who could capture the most rabbits." Hajime paused a moment to drink some water, and eat another roll.

"Now, the Weasel was very proud of his ability to hunt. He boasted that, among them, he was the most talented. He was born to hunt Rabbits, unlike the Gorilla, and was smart and well-trained, unlike the Fox. He bragged and he bragged, and claimed that he was destined to win the contest. He was Fated to be the victor. When the Hunting Day came, the three animals split ways to hunt."

"The Goriila, so strong, ripped trees from their roots- and opened up Rabbit burrows. Surely, he would win. He would have, had he not pulled one too many trees from a particular hillside. When he pulled the last tree on the hill, the dirt and rocks from the hill rolled, and covered him up. Even though he tried very hard, he was out of the Hunt for good."

"The Weasel, now that the competition had let-up, began to relax. He was the most talented of all the hunters, and the silly, stupid Fox was the least. He felt that he was fated to win the contest!"

"While the Weasel relaxed his hunting, the Fox began to quicken the pace. Unknown to the Weasel, the Fox had hidden talents that had yet to mature. While he chased the Rabbits, his instincts kicked in- and catching a rabbit felt like second nature to the Fox. Not only that- but the Fox was a quick learner. He'd seen the Weasel at work, crawling through Rabbit holes, then copied him. As it turned out, his body was sleek enough to chase a rabbit right into his burrow too!"

"At the end of the day, the Weasel was astonished. He had less rabbits than the Fox! He was very bitter for a time, but admitted that perhaps fate didn't work the way he thought."

"There's more to the story, of course, but the rest would be better suited for another day."

"The moral of the story is this twofold. First, do not be like the Gorilla. laugh. Likewise, do not be like the Weasel, and expect Fate to work for you. Fate is inescapable, and is nobody's friend. Instead, always be like the Fox. Work safely within your limits, and follow the path that Fate has set for you. Such a path will lead to happiness and prosperity."

Hajime glanced at the two other ninja, "Things come together in a certain way for a certain reason. Only the gods see the designs. If we follow their lead, they will show us the way to success. I'm sure that there have been uncertain times in both of your lives- surely there's been a time in your life where you felt the Gods of the natural world guiding your way."

Sai released a heavy sigh, his focus was fixed on the monk and it was only now he realized that his grip on his leg had become so tight his knuckles had gone white. This was no longer a situation he found wise to continue.

"Lovely story. However I feel the need to correct three things." With a shift of posture he turned to face Kaito, "You would be the gorilla. Irrelevant in all circumstances beyond the mess you shall surely create... I do apologize but at what point did you think this conversation was ever for you or about you. There is no us, there is the monk and then there is me."

Pushing his chair back he rose from his seat if only to lean forward on the table to look the monk in the eyes. "Your fable has a flaw for it is not the original tale. You see the gorilla in all tales not but a fool and if the story of 3 losers surely only the rabbit would be the winner as only the rabbit can out wit the rest.

No... you see neither the fox nor the weasel could catch the rabbit. The fox is clever and fast but could not reach the rabbit in its borrow. The weasel, whole sleek and tricky, could only chase the rabbit through its tunnels. Together however, the weasel could chase the rabbit from safety to the trap set by the fox.

And do you know the moral of the story, dear monk? Friendships among the wicked are nothing less than conspiracies, by which the defenceless and the innocent are sure to suffer. That the carefulness of the wicked causes the godly to look about them."

Leaning back, Sai turned to leave stopping only to add, "I retract my statement, Kaito, I was to rude to judge you as the gorilla. No. You are the rabbit. The question is, between the monk and I, who is the fox and who is the weasel." And with that, the man walked out of the restaurant, not once had he touching the food or drink that had been offered.

(Phone post, as well.)

The monk rambled on with an older tale he'd heard as a kid, which honestly did have a relevance in there lives at this very moment. The gorilla, the weasel, and the fox. The story did have a pretty simple moral, but damn did he hate this story. Something your parents use on you to make a point about one thing or another. These types of stories were irritating, but Sai was really pushing his luck with his opening statement, basically calling him useless. Sai continued with his own thoughts behind the story, Kaito didn't really care this point. This jackass hadn't even known him for a hour yet and thought he was better than him. A fire was lit in his chest now.

The real curve ball was near the end of the story, Sai changed his original statement, calling Kaito the rabbit now. "No ******** s**t I'm the rabbit!" His inner, dumb drunk self coming out. "Wait was that a compliment or..." Either way, damage was done and he was already angry. Sai exited the building leaving all the food he ordered behind. At this point, he snapped his head towards the monk. "What the ******** was that? Guy acts like he knows me or something, acting like I'm useless or something?" Kaito stood up, following Sai out the door. "Where the hell do you think you're going?" An angry sounding Kaito yelled as Sai was walking away from him. "What makes you think you're so much better than me you s**t?!"

After they had exchanged a few pleasantries, Juugou watched Haikyo return to the lobby of a nearby building brimming with confidence. I'm guessing that's the lady that gave him a hard time earlier... thought the young Aburame, eyeing the particularly well-built woman. Considering that the older teen was a stranger to actual combat, it was easy to see why he was defeated so easily the first time. Haikyo then led the way to the area where the combat test would be administered and was followed by the now irritated proctor. Juugou took the opportunity to enter the lobby of the building as well, but just before he got halfway to the registry desk he was stopped by a receptionist he had failed to notice before.

"Are you here for the battle test as well?" she asked in disinterested tone. Juugou turned to walk toward her, fishing into his bag for the letter of recommendation Grunnard the librarian had given him earlier. He proffered it to the receptionist without saying a word. The woman gave an exasperated sigh before moving to the currently vacant desk to input data into the computer terminal. She then produced a pod camera and told Juugou to stand still as she snapped a quick photo. Within the span of three minutes the young Aburame held his ninja registry card in one hand. In the other, the steel forehead protector emblazoned with the leaf symbol attached to a blue cloth. Now officially a Genin, Juugou smiled from ear to ear. It had taken months, but he had finally passed the first hurdle to accomplishing his dream. The young Aburame thanked the receptionist, who simply nodded and began filing her nails.

When Juugou turned to leave he saw Haikyo already outside. He jogged over to the older teen, who seemed pretty content with himself. "It looks like things went well this time around. What happened in there?" he asked, pointing back at the registry building with his thumb.

The monk continued to stare at Sai, their eyes locked while the ninja expanded on the tale. The tale came in many forms, and that was certainly one of the outcomes and morals. Hajime mused that it wasn't wrong, either. Some of the most wicked things ever done were born from the friendships of wicked ninja. It was a good fable, and a good lesson.

Sai the Abrasive insulted them both, but Hajime was more or less unfazed. Kaito, however, took the insults personally. Kaito, Hajime noticed, was a proud young man. Pride could make a person strong, but it was also a dangerous quality to have. Hajime shrugged noncommittally, and watched as Kaito darted form the store. Hajime took a long breath, then put some coins on the table to pay for their meals. He made a quick prayer and took off from the establishment to see the pair on the street.

He glanced between the two. Somewhat half-heartedly, he tried to stop them, "Please don't fight, Kaito-san and Sai-san. I haven't quite mastered my healing jutsu yet. I cannot guarantee your good health."

Hajime sighed, and sensed something beside him. He looked to his left, and saw a red toad, about the size of a dog. The toad was wearing a blue vest and a blue headband with the Leaf Village symbol on it. It's tongue was lolling out, and wrapped around a scroll. As the monk watched, the tongue extended up a foot or two, and Hajime extended his hand. The tongue unfurled, the the scroll dropped onto his palm. The monk watched the toad for a moment before it exploded into a puff of smoke.

Regardless of what he heard in the background, Hajime unfurled the scroll and read it. He announced to his other two team-members, "A little birdie told the Ninja Registry about our plans. We are officially a ninja cell- as our ninja registration forms have been passed through. This scroll has our first mission."

Sai looked over his shoulder, his brow cocked as Kaito chased out after him, "Hm? I'm sorry but isn't that your favorite restaurant, shouldn't you not be dine and ditching them." He said with a laugh. Before he could start walking again however, the monk also arrive mentioning something about a mission. "Oh?" Snorting, he stepped to the curve and sat down, "Well good luck with that."

Clearing the Record

...Rank: D (Hard - 2000 words)
Description: A merchant in town has been indicted for a burglary. Although signs seem to point to the merchant, the merchant swears that he has solid alibis. Over the course of the three hours that the burglary was to have taken place, the merchant visited a barbeque restaurant, a sake bar, and an apothecary. Report on the validity of his alibis, and provide evidence if possible.

Hajime shook his head, and waved his hand dismissively, "I took care of the bill. It's nothing." He glanced down at the scroll, and read, "A local merchant named Hassahiro Yagami needs help proving his innocence."

The monk fitted his sedge hat on his head again, and rolled up the scroll. With a gentle underhand throw, he passed it to Kaito. Kaito would be more receptive to the words on the scroll, he thought. Kaito, he had a feeling, might even know where the specific locations listed on the scroll were. Hajime had no clue at all.

"I am sorry, Sai-san, but we have our first job as Shinobi of the Leaf Village, and you're included. Even if we are just collecting receipts and jotting down people's memories, that's our lot in life now." Wistfully, he gazed off at the hazy clouds that hung on the horizon, "We are the tools of the highest bidder, and currently, our worth is two hundred ryo a piece... If we can find those alibis." He mused, " If you consider that a small sum, you haven't seen what kind of coin you get when asking for alms."

"If it is any consolation, puzzling over this mission may take our minds off of our existential crises. It might be therapeutic to get busy with work."

A sigh of frustration came from the boys mouth upon hearing the news from Hajime. Whether he liked it or not, Kaito was gonna be stuck with this moron for a while. "Were a team now.. Great." His words filled with obvious sarcasm. The now genin would shake his head, before turning to Hajime whom soon after tossed him the scroll. "I owe you one for paying the bill, monk." Upset or not it didn't really matter, his first mission was ahead of them and they had a job to get done. "Burglary case. Says this merchant was indicted for the crime but he swears he didn't do it. Guess it's our job here to go check his alibi." Kaito went silent for a moment, quickly scanning the page for all the information. "According to this guy, he stopped at a barbecue, sake bar, and lastly an apothecary in that order. Guess we'll start at the barbecue, it's actually right down the road from here. There's actually quite a bit of restaurant's in this strip here." Kaito turned to his right, pointing ahead. "The restaurants name is Hikari. It's actually a pretty fancy place here in town, pretty pricey as well." Rolling the scroll up, Kaito placed the scroll in his right pocket and starting walking towards his destination.

Hajime was sure to follow, although Sai didn't entirely seem very interested. Kaito wasn't really sure what his motives were, but honestly at this point he didn't really care too much. "We're about a mile out, should be there in just a couple of minutes if we walk pretty quickly. Let's get movin'.' Kaito took a couple more steps before tuning his attention to Sai one last time. "Whether we like it or not, we're stuck together now. Come if you want, if not no sweat off my back." With that, the group whether it be two or three was on their way to visit Hikari. Time to get down to some ninja business!

Haikyo looked around himself, wondering if his ally had left or not, but it would seem like Juugou had indeed found other things to do for the time being, for he was nowhere to be seen. Haikyo was a little disappointed, but he knew that the boy was likely busy--not a lot of people had the luxury of not having anything to do. He honestly had no idea what to do at this point, either. Perhaps he would have to go looking for someone to ask some questions of--what was their job? What did they need to do? It had to say it somewhere, right? Was there a 'being a ninja for dummies' handbook? Juugo stretched as he prepared to wander off into the village, but right before he left, the familiar voice cut the silence. He nodded to Juugou when he said that it looked like things had gone well.

"You're quite right. Things went very well." He stated, ruminating on the experience. "What happened? Well...I would have been beaten pretty badly again. However, I was able to stop her first incoming attack with my soul skin that I showed you before, and it surprised her enough I was almost able to land a blow. She easily avoided the strike I attempted after blocking her first attack, but she saw the worth of my combat planning I suppose. It's all thanks to you!" Haikyo stated, a very pleased expression etched across his face. He supposed Juugou was the person to ask at this point, and though he was embarrassed of his own ignorance, he could not help it. Besides, if he were to look foolish, Juugou was the one he wanted to look foolish infront of.

"So, I am loath to ask this, but what comes next? What are we to do as newly graduated ninja? What does...a ninja do? I was merely told to join them to hone my skills--told that it would help me find my path." He said with a shrug of his shoulders. He knew absolutely nothing about them--other than the tales he had heard from his visits to the normal people he and his parents had visited. They said they did odds and ends, but they were also the military might of the villages. So...who told them what to do, or rewarded them for it? He hoped he didn't have to deal with that registrar too often. He almost laughed at the thought of it before he turned his attention back to Juugou, seeing what the boy's explanation would be.

Juugou listened intently as Haikyo recounted the events of his second bout with the proctor. The older teen had been able to successfully stop the woman's attack with the soul skin technique he'd developed a few minutes ago, which had surprised her enough to let her guard down just enough to narrowly avoid a blow from the Yomi. Because of this the proctor had allowed Haikyo to pass his test, and ultimately attributed his success to Juugou's help.

"Oh, I really didn't do much." said the young Aburame, scratching the back of his head, a slight blush spreading on his cheeks. He really disliked being thanked for something that came naturally to him, but it made him feel good being acknowledged. "I just assessed the information you provided and gave some advice. Luckily it proved to work out." Haikyo's next question came as no surprise, being raised as a sheltered child that knew nothing of the ninja world. "Well..." started Juugou, trying to conjure the words to make his explanation as simple as possible for Haikyo, "As ninja, we are officially part of the military of the Fire Country. We're Genin now so the chance of us getting involved in anything major, like war, is really unlikely. That being said, we can begin taking on simpler domestic missions about women cheating on husbands with their third cousin or maintaining civility by chasing down public offenders by the name of Aizen and Takera." Those names he mentioned were world renowned for creating disturbances during previous Chuunin exams. "Going on mission is the best way for us to hone our skills, and make some coin while doing so." Juugou rubbed his upturned fingers against his thumb, then stretched. "We can go to one of the new mission kiosks and select from one of the available ones. There's one right there." he said pointing at the electronic stand near the benches where they met.

Sai made no move to leave with the two children, his acknowledgement of their words accumulated in a soft scoff and nothing more. Sighing softly he closed his eyes, a hand dragging across his features before dropping to rest on his knee, his eyes focused on a scene that only he could see.

A young man, not even in his twenties yet, he stood beside a woman of similar age. The man, or better said the boy, had platinum white hair and wore the robes of a priest. The girl wore a battle kimono and strangely enough had two pronounced horns perturbing for her skull and slit like eyes. They stood side by side, the boy slightly before her with a defensive stance to his [posture. He was arguing, perhaps pleading with two similarly young males. These two bore a striking resemblance to each other, they were likely brothers. Likewise one stood before the other but both were relaxed in their stances. The one standing in the front was dressed in combat gear while the other wore the robes of a Kage. The robed one spoke in response to the priest but stopped as he realized he wasn't pleading with him but rather his brother. After a moment the robed brother addressed the woman, the man seemed calm but the reaction from the opposing two was a stark contrast as both became visually aggressive, the other brother shook his head and moved to stand directly between them and the robed brother.

The robbed brother spoke once again, a grin spreading across his features as the other glanced back appalled. It was in that moment that the priest rushed forward in a rage but before half the distance was covered he was stopped with a look from the younger brother. The scene darkened as the priest fell, blood spilling like red tears from his eyes, the woman behind letting out a howl of anger and grief, the world shaking in it's last moments before disappearing into the darkness.

It was just a street again. A sigh passed through Sai's lips as he turned to look for the monk and his companion but they had both left at this point, how long ago he wasn't sure. Standing with a grunt, he crossed the street to stand in the same spot he had in his memory. "I'm sorry, Kingyo.. but even now I don't believe there was another way." He whispered to the ghost of his memories.

Turning his back on the spot, he made his way back towards the registrar building.

"Hi, sweetheart but I'm going to need your help with something." The man smiled sweetly at the woman at the front desk of the registrar building. It would be a few minutes of flirting before he had the files on the mission that he had been assigned. Sitting down at one of the benches provided for those waiting, he shifted through the files until he found the information he was looking for.

'Hassahiro Yagami... Age thirty-two, average height, single, deals in silks and tapestries. Now what would you be doing at an apothecary? And why go to a restaurant and a bar within such a short span of time.' With a smile and a wink, Sai returned the files and left the building. Turning down the street he made his way straight to the merchant's place of residence. While the monk searched for the man's innocence, he would check for his guilt.

Haikyo shook his head and placed a strong hand on Juugou's shoulder. "Do not downplay the importance of your advice. You taught a man to look at a situation from a different perspective. This altered perception was what allowed that man to further his own life, in pursuit of his dreams. That, Juugou, is an enormous deed. Nothing to merely scoff at." He stated with a sharp nod. He listened intently to the explanations of what entailed being a ninja, and he essentially came to the conclusion that it was almost exactly as he had imagined in his mind already--which wasn't exactly a bad thing. It meant he could go with the flow of things easily and move forward in this world with a general understanding of what the world expected back from him. When Juugou mentioned Aizen and Takera, however, Haikyo quirked a brow and screwed up his face, obviously confused. "Aizen and who? I know not of these people, but if they are causing problems for the people, then we mustn't let that continue. Are they strong?" He asked, wondering just who these criminal elements were.

While Juugou had the time to explain the two he had mentioned, they began to walk towards this training kiosk that he had mentioned, and he began to look through some of the missions that were available. There were simple things like cats who had been lost--then there were more difficult trials like hunting down stolen merchandise from a trader's cart. He had no idea where to start--he barely even knew where he was standing. He had only just come to this country, so he did not know his way around. "I do not know this place, as I have only just recently moved here. So perhaps it would be better for you to look through the missions and choose one for us, yeah? But, if this is the quickest way for us to gain strength, I would love to complete as many as I can." He said with a grin, determination lighting up his eyes. He was going to do this. He had to do this.

He felt a pang in his chest as he stood there, thinking about his family. He wondered if he would ever see them again...or if he was going to end up learning on his own the rest of his life...would he ever be allowed to return to them? He bit his lip as he looked back to Juugou. "Since we are military...do we have any restrictions on movement, Juugou? I mean...between other countries?" He wondered if it would be considered some sort of act of war for him to go back to Rain...he would want to visit them eventually...when he had made some progress in the art of his family line. When he could carry out a spiritual rite...when he could connect to the souls of those around him, and offer them passage upon their deaths. That was when he would return.
