"I'm fine" Syrus said, though it wasn't that convincing. He just wanting to get off the whole subject entirely. Instead he started to take the pile of sand he had been gathering and started to form a cylander with it using his hands.
"Should the tower go here, or should it be a little closer to the keep?" he asked, not wanted to go to far to realize he was wrong in the placement.

Skye smiled softly, blushing slightly. "Anywhere is fine," she reassured him. "Towers can go anywhere. My great grandmother's towers are built into the keep but in a book I saw when I was little the towers were far away from the keep."
She finished her tower and poked some holes in the sides for windows.
"How many towers should we make?" she asked him curiously.

Syrus wondered for a few moments, picturing a castle in his mind's eye. The most cliche'd ones had four, one for each corner, but he honestly wondered about the structural stability of only having four.
"Seven," he said finally. "One for each corner and then one in the middle, except the fron't, because that's where the door should go."

Skye nodded brightly, pleased with Syrus's suggestion. Or maybe she just liked agreeing to whatever he said.
"I cannot tell where exactly the middle is, so it might not be even," she told him apologetically, "but it is just a sand castle, so it is not so important, right?"
She giggled softly. "My uncle would be good at it. He is ... how you say ..."
She tried and tried to think of the word, but she didn't know how to say it, so she simply signed it: 'architect'.

Syrus nodded that he understood, then went to work on finishing up the tower he was working on, making sure to dot it as Skye had done with hers before moving onto the next one.
"It sounds like you have a very interesting family" he commented as he started on his next tower.

Skye blinked at Syrus's question, her hands pausing as she worked on her second tower.
"Um ... I ... suppose," she murmured thoughtfully, lowering her eyes to watch what she was doing once more. "Sometimes they are interesting, but sometimes they are mean ... well, some of them ... one uncle is very mean, but the rest are mostly very nice."
She smiled. "I like to visit my uncle who has horses, I think it is called ... a ranch?"
She signed the word to show Syrus what she meant.

Syrus nodded to say both that he understood and that she was correct in her wording before dotting the next tower with windows.
"Should our castle have a moat?" he asked, looking up as always to allow her to see what he said.

For the first time in their conversation about castles, Skye's knowledge failed her, and a lost expression crossed her face.
"Moat?" she repeated sheepishly, a faint blush sprinkling across her cheeks. "I ... do not know what that is ..."
For all she knew about her great grandmother's castle, she had never seen the word 'moat' before ... never read it, never signed it, never seen it signed. She honestly had no idea what it meant.

"Moat," he replied with a nod. "I've read about it in some of my mom's books. Humans would dig large trenches around their castles and fill them with water, making it harder for unwanted guests to get inside without someone from the inside lowering the drawbridge...which is like a door, but it's really big and opens from the top with chains, and makes a bridge over the moat and lets friends and allies come in with ease. Some people even put alligators or wooden spikes in the water to make it even more dangerous, but I highly doubt we need to that much in detail if we even want to use a moat or not," he explained, making sure he didn't go too fast so that Skye could catch all of those words.

Skye watched Syrus's lips intently so that she would not miss a word that he said, and when he finished speaking she nodded, smiling faintly.
"Well, I understand now why I did not know what is a moat," she giggled. "My great grandmother's castle is in the desert, there is not enough water ... there is a stream that runs down the mountain, but it is only enough to give water to the city, not put it around the palace."
She wanted to show him so badly - it would be just wonderful if she could take him there! It was so beautiful, it really was ...

Syrus looked at the castle they were making for a moment before looking up at Skye again.
"Well, seeing as our castle is surrounded by sand, it would be a desert castle as well," he commented. "So, I don't think a moat would work, now would it?" He then smiled and laughed before looking around. Most of the towers and walls were up now, so it needed decoration. He stood up, making sure not to hit their hard work with his feet.
"Hold on a moment," he said, brushing off sand and then heading closer toward the water. Sure, it made him a wee bit nervous, but that's where the best looking seashells were located.

Skye watched Syrus as he ran off, her eyes curious. She understood what he meant about the castle not needing a moat, so why was he running towards the water? What was he doing?
She could have called to him, but she didn't think of that. She still didn't quite understand the concept of 'hearing' people speak through vibrations, she could only feel them and see their lips move. She was used to having to see people in order to speak to them, and so that was naturally what she did with others: she waited until they were looking at her to speak to them as well.

Syrus took his time, trying to find pretty shells that they could use to make their castle seem more...sand castle like. He made sure that they were more flat, so be sure they stayed in the sand better, and not too big either. After finding a small handful of shells in multiple colors and shapes he came back and put them in a little pile near their castle.
"Decoration" he explained when he returned.

Skye's eyes lit up when she saw the shells that Syrus had collected, and she giggled softly.
"They are very pretty," she told him honestly, her eyes sparkling brightly. "You are very thoughtful ... you have very good ideas."
She scooted over to kneel next to him, running her fingers lightly over the shells, and then she looked at him and asked, "Where shall we put them?"

Syrus looked at Skye, then the shells, and then at their castle. It was a very good question.
"Well, perhaps we can put the nicest looking one in front...sort of like a replacement to a family crest or something like that?" She honestly knew more about castles then he did, having family that lived in one and all, so he was open to ideas.
