Mostly, 3rd tone before another 3rd becomes 2nd. Like in ni hao, or in any other situation where 2 3rds are together. Also, bu, "not", which is 4th tone, becomes 2nd when in front of another 4th tone. And often times whet there are two words in a row with the same tone, the second of the 2 becomes toneless.

And theres a weird thing about the 3rd tone. You know how it is rising-falling? Well, the majority of the time, it actully just falls and doesn't come back up. So, the only thing then that differentiates the 3rd and 4th tones is that the 3rd tone starts at meduim and falls, and the 4th tone starts high and falls. The only time when the 3rd tone gets its full pronunciation is either when people are talking slowly, or at the end of a sentence.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

I sorta noticed the thing about the 3rd tone already, but I also found that sometimes it sounded like the 2nd tone a little bit. Am I imagining things?

To quote myself:

Oh lol, how embarrassing... I get confused when people refer to them with numbers, because I'm used to the different accents above the pinyn.. xd

I'm having trouble with the 3rd tone (mandarin). How do you pronounce it?
PostPosted: Mon Nov 05, 2007 8:51 am

It's hard to explain to someone how to do it, but it's falling-rising (I think that's the name of it). You have to lower your tone, then raise it again. 3nodding

And remember that the 3rd tome before another 3rd tone is pronounced as the 2nd tone, and that the 3rd tone often will fall, but not rise back up in most cases, except at the end of a word or when someone is talking slown

Also, "bu" fourth tone is pronounced second tone before another fourth tone. There's one other irregularity, but I can't remember it.

Does anyone know if there's a list in China that's the equivalent of the Joyou Kanji? People talk about a certain number of characters needed to read a newspaper - any thoughts?

I've seen is a list of most frequently used charcaters. I think I say it here http://www.zhongwen.com/ , but I can't seem to find it. Its probably floating around on the internets somewhere.

I found the most frequent 3000 characters (ranked in order), but not seen any official list or anything. I wonder if such a thing actually exists. But then again, I guess it's sorta like asking for a list of words that someone living in England has to know before the graduate >.<

Anyway, my personal goal is to read a magazine by the time I'm 19, so my time is slowly but surely running out. It seems so unattainable when you don't know what you're aiming towards. You just keep accumulating knowledge of characters until one day, you find that you can read! Crazy isn't it?

I'm in a weirdish mood atm, so that post may have sounded a bit weird. The second para does to me anyway. blaugh

Are traditional characters used more or are simplified characters used more?
PostPosted: Thu Nov 29, 2007 12:10 pm

Simplified.

Traditional is used mainly in Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities. Simplified is everywhere else.

Elaborate! domokun

I think in the spoken language everything is much more subtle, since as in any language, peple get lazy ans smuddle things together. But even if smuddle'd, the tones are still there. Either that, or my ears play tricks on me.
