"...I...he...."

Julian was apparently very frightened by this creature - he turned his gaze away from where he was, looking at Emer instead. If he looked at her, he could believe they were alone, if only a little.

"...The...the Hatter...the Mad Hatter...."

The Mad Hatter. It was so forboding, the way Julian had said it. He seemed to fear this character far more than the others. It was strange to Emerwyn, for the Mad Hatter had always been her very favorite character.

"I see... Well, actually, I do not. Remember that, Julian. Perhaps, if I cannot see him, he cannot see me. If you choose not to see him, mayhaps he will leave."

"Maybe...maybe...." Julian sniffed, wincing at the sharp sensitivity of his breath across his upper lip.

"...Emer...wyn...thank you for staying with me...but...." He moved to bite his lip, but only managed to do so lightly before highly regretting it.

"...You...should go...rest. I think...maybe...you scared the Bandersnatch away for now...."

This was all so real to him...but at the same time, his own worry had started to fade as he began to think about why Emerwyn had been there to see this.

"Are - are you certain?" Emerwyn was still very concerned about Julian. His recent change... She'd only been with him so long.
But, looking in his eyes, she deemed that he was right. He needed to fight his own battles, after all.

She nodded. "I believe you are right." With a smile, she stroked his hair back again, and slowly released him.
"I will be back," she said. "I am here with you, to the end."

Julian sunk a bit back onto the bed, tucking up his feet a bit so he was curled. The effect was that of a kitten, getting ready to doze off.

Even with all this, his human eyes pleaded.

"...You promise...?"

When it really came down to it, Julian was only a frightened creature - and in the face of his own personal world, he shook with fear. But if he could have just a little link to the outside world...to the Island, and not Wonderland...maybe things would be all right.

Even if...loving her still hurts...maybe it will be all right....

She had risen and half crossed the room, stopping for a moment to turn to him again, right beside where Julian had seen the Hatter.

"I promise."

The door opened and closed, and Emerwyn was gone.

Green eyes darted about. Left. Right. Left. Right. They settled on the Mock Turtle, who was staring at him dolefully.

Timidly, Julian spoke up.

"...Sorry if we woke you...but could you keep an eye out...for me...?"

His strength finally gave out, and he drifted into a dreamless sleep.

Talking to the Mirror (and the Cameras Trained Upon It)

Julian
"It's sort of funny, isn't it? I mean...one day...you can be barely eating somewhere in the slums...then the next, you're turning into a cat somewhere in Wonderland.

Wonderland.

It's not what I expected.

And really...I...it scares me, you know? I just - I can't - I don't know what's real and what isn't anymore. There's me, there's the other Islanders...I barely know anyone at all...there's the...workers...Emerwyn, who is in a league of her own...and then there's US. Those of us who live in Wonderland.

Cheshire, who knows it all and leads me...who I trust and...and I know I can talk to....

Jabberwock, who is...fortunately quiet back here in the village...feral...horrifying....

And....

Him.

The Hatter. Who...I can only pray isn't listening...watching....

I know someone must be....

Just as long as it isn't him."

The Cheshire Cat
"Julian is slipping...much faster than he ever was.

While I'm rather glad to see him resisting less and less to seeing Wonderland, I'm...concerned. The Hatter is up to something, and he's got Julian rattled enough that I can scarcely do a thing to soothe him - there are times when he just doesn't HEAR ME.

He'd better not get the bright idea to go to the Queen again. That would destroy him utterly....

No - damn - the Hatter is trying again...it's all I can do to stop him....

JULIAN BELONGS TO ME. HATTER, YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING HERE, DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?

Leave him alone....

Go away."

Julian always had a problem with not letting himself get enough food. And it was over a week ago now that he woke up one morning to a itching, hot bulge on the back of his arm - surely in injection wound, though it might have been lost among the injury-prone boy's many scratchmarks.

Strangely, when most islanders feel a driving hunger close to the change, Julian seemed to have even less of a motivation to eat. But he did have the fever. Oh boy did he have the fever. A wasting, boiling fever that only served to accentuate the visions that frequently plague the boy.

To an onlooker, it might seem like the fever is making the poor boy waste away, getting so skinny.... sweating out of the few parts of him that are not covered in fur.

But the truth of the matter is that there seems to be some... strangeness... to this serum. Some parts, schematically, can't change very much - Julian's skull only constricts a relatively small amount - though the added pressure can not be good for the boy's remaining sanity. But his limbs seem to wither, all the while shortening and thickening.... Becoming more feline in proportion. His long, skinny, emaciated frame seems to pull in on itself, thickening and shortening.

The only part that doesn't shorten is Julian's long, and progressively fluffier tail.

The changes, really, aren't that dramatic, but certainly noticible to anyone that Julian might have known before. Easily shorter than five feet. Perhaps closer to even four. The massive once-pocket-sized watch that is now almost dinner-plate sized to Julian stands to show that.
