Donovan chuckled at Elrohir's off handed comment about the number of questions before focusing in on Elberon. He crossed his arms over his chest as he explained his reasons.

"I began to consider this venture after a run in with some slavers, well... Elrohir can tell you if he's willing, it was more than a few. Since we were heading into the desert, the slavers that died were stripped of anything useful including gold. Appartely it was a lunctive business for them, and they were dead so I kept it."

He raised a brow at Elberon and wondered how honest he should be, and decided it was probably in his best interest to be honest for the man asked how he came to do what he did sometime in the future. After all he did not say Elberon could not ask on a later date.

"I come from a clan of bodyguards and assassins," he finally explained, "I had retired to be a bodyguard after I married-"

At least he would hope he would marry before Kara decided to visit again, and if there was a difference in time that Elrohir might notice well, they might as well be married the two anyhow.

"my wife. Normally though people don't retire until late thirties to be a bodyguard. It felt a odd, so when I realized there was good to be done here I decided to take it. Why not? I don't have to fully retire, I can morally handle this, I legally won't get into trouble, and the dead rats don't need their possessions after the fact.

"My payment and yours for this venture comes from the possessions that come off of the highwaymen, freebooters and slavers gotten rid of. In addition between hunts income for everyone will also be provided from the horses, I don't need all the horses breed, only enough to get the children home and so I don't have to go off replacing a horse once every few visits. So any horses trained and are not needed can be sold, I won't take anything from the horse profits because the agreement I had made was that my profits would come from the hunts."

He knew he skipped a question, which he was going to back track on.

"As for why I'm only here every few years, as you've been told I come from a different world, that runs slower than the time here. Every day back where I come from is roughly two weeks if not a bit more here. I have duties back home, therefore I can visit about once every few weeks or so my time, which amounts to a few years your time."

Haradhel opened the fire doors and started piling the wood inside, equally between the two places. She left them open for Cindy to load the last of the wood when she brought it in, then turned and started to prepare the food.

Elberon nodded and opened his mouth to ask another question, but a look from Elrohir silenced him, and he just nodded again.

"Very well, then," he said with a grin. "I'll get back to work. Thank you for your answers, they were very enlightening."

Cindy came in one last time and piled the last of the wood into the places carefully making sure it wouldn't toppled too badly as it burned. Nodding at her work for a moment she turned to see what else she could do.

"That's the last of it," she told Haradhel.

Donovan nodded, "Glad someone did," he murmured, "You're welcome."

Though he understood what Elrohir had meant by his earlier comment, if he had not limited the number of questions, the man might have kept asking. Ah well, if Elberon was curious enough, then he would go and ask someone else that wasn't him.

Haradhel smiled and passed Cindy a peeling knife from a drawer. "Would you mind helping to peel the potatoes?" she asked. "Peels can just go into the basket again, potatoes into the pot."

And she filled the pot with water about halfway.

"Just give me a minute to get the fires going and I'll help you as well."

Elrohir grinned and took a step backwards, out of the stable again. "Ready, then?" he asked Donovan and the others. "Just the fighters left, I think ... and I should warn you about them ... some of them are a little eccentric."

"Okay," Cindy murmured taking up a knife to carefully peel the potatoes away from her thumb.

She had learnt the hard way a long time ago what happened when you tried to cut towards it instead.

"How many people do you normally cook for?"

Donovan had to admit the second half of this was becoming quite amusing, even though he himself was being caught off guard by some of the people involved. He motioned for Triton to follow as he went with Elrohir giving a nod that he was quite ready to meet the people he would be working with most of the time.

"Elrohir," Donovan replied in almost absolute seriousness, "Fighters spend their occupation putting their life on the line, for that reason along we're all a bit eccentric."

Nevermind the mental issues that went along with it, whether it be emotional or actually physically cracking one's skull one too many times.

Triton wasn't about to disgree with that statement, even if a fighter learnt just for the competition, a competition could be dangerous to one's health. To be a fighter was to know you were going to get beaten up every now and again, people with survival instincts tended to forgo that.

Haradhel held her hands at each of the fire doors and summoned a fire in each of them. Once they were burning hot enough, she closed the doors and washed her hands in the sink to one side.

"Usually I only cook for Elrohir, Aliya and myself," she replied, taking up a second knife and helping to peel the potatoes. "Everyone else usually feeds themselves. This is the slow season for work, so ..." She shrugged. "On the other hand, come winter, everyone will be eating inside, so I'll be needing quite a bit of help to feed everyone. Not to mention, I'll be nearly half way through my pregnancy by then, so I'll be needing even more help."

She frowned softly. "Truth be told, I'm worried about the winter. I've never experienced one outside the desert before, and I really don't know what to expect at all."

Elrohir nodded. "I understand, Donovan, but ..."

He hesitated, trying to find the words to explain: but finally he gave up and shrugged. "You'll see."

"I'm told," Cindy replied softly, "That this land as four seasons like back home, and it comes within one year cycle," she added recalling someone had mentioned that the cycle for the desert was 1000 years.

She dumped a few peeled potatoes into the pot.

Donovan raised a brow, he wondered what Elrohir was trying to say. Granted he wasn't sure how much experience Elrohir had with fighters but he assumed it would be quite a bit if he was still training with his wife and had been back at the castle.

Haradhel nodded. "Yes, they have ... well, actually it's a six-season cycle. "Spring, Summer, Autumn, Fading, Winter, and Stirring. And I know that the snows come sometime towards the end of Fading, and leave at the beginning of Stirring ... and yet Winter is the longest month of all, save Summer. They're equal in length."

She sighed. "I've never seen snow before, and I'm ... a little apprehensive about it."

As the group approached the barracks, the door opened and Elros ducked out. He was the onl one on the entire ranch (and indeed probably in all of the Four Lands) who needed to do so, but he didn't mind. He hadn't hit his head yet, and he had been there over a year already.

Once outside, he straightened to his full height, an impressive almost 8 feet, and looked around. His icy blue eyes spotted the group immediately, and he moved to meet them.

Cindy thought about it for a moment, she supposed it was a lot easier than just having four seasons. Though she ahd to really think about the snow one.

"I'm not sure how I can prepare you on that, it depends on the amount of snow. It's fun to play out in though."

Provided they didn't get buried in it.
