"Neat," Lori said with a nod. That put Luca into a new subset entirely. He'd have to update his file. Of course the research capabilities of learning Luca came far secondhand behind just plain learning him as a person.
"I know people who can no s**t actually understand animals. We're like real mythical legendary Erlking bastards. It's crazy. I come from a line of healers, though."

"I can't do that," Luca said, shaking his head and grinning at Lori. "It'd be nice to be able to. I mean, when I was a kid, things we're easier. They followed me around, mom would go 'Take that thing back where you found it!'. Here they don't follow so much. I do have this obnoxious crow that lives in Lily's tree."
Healers, huh? That was definitely more useful. "Handy trick," he said.

"Well, there's always less animals in towns. My yard would be full of them if it wasn't for my dog." Who would be cared-for by Dari and Maia after her day-care, "She's a big fan of squirrels. They're not such big fans of her."
"Mm-hm. I mean, it's great until you consider how much it drains the user's energy. An all-out resurrection by one person usually means the caster dies."

"Yeah, they don't seem to like dogs much," Luca mused. "I've always liked them, but I never thought I could focus on them enough. I'm so absent minded..." He shook his head. "They wouldn't get the attention they deserve."
"No resurrection," Luca said. "I never really noticed my ability until it was pointed out to me." It still didn't feel altogether magical. "Thought it came along with growing up in the forest."

"Yeah, they need a lot of attention, that's for sure. My girly's spoiled. I don't leave her alone during the day. She gets too nervous. She goes to day care." He smiled, a bit embarrassed by the admission.
"Your ability? I didn't know you knew magic. Or do you mean the beast affinity?"

"It's better for her not to be alone then," Luca saw nothing strange about sending a dog to daycare; people sent their children to daycare all the time. It was basically the same thing.
"No magic," Luca considered. Honestly, he was glad he didn't have it. Lori's healing magic sounded like a hassle. "I meant the animals, yeah."

"She was a rescue. I think she was abused. She's come a long way, though." Lori liked to talk about his girl. She was his only family out here, and they shared unconditional love.
"Right, of course. A part of it is just plain acclimation, but it is technically considered magic. Then there's fairy-princess get-off-my-law affinity. Unfortunately I'm a member of the latter class. They just look at me as if I'm supposed to know what they want."

"Poor thing," Luca frowned slightly. How could anyone hurt something that loved them? Let alone an innocent animal? "Good, I'm glad. What kind of dog is she?"
Luca smirked at him. "So you're why the squirrel came over. It's cute. Shame neither of us speak squirrel."

"She's a red dobie," Lori said, and then gave the obligatory addendum: "She's totally harmless. Likes to be carried like a baby."
He smiled to Luca then and shook his head. "Then they'd never leave us alone." They had wandered past the critter and it had apparently decided they weren't worth bothering any more. Lori had to admit it didn't happen to him often, but sometimes it came with more force than he was expecting.
"So you don't have any pets?"

"Big dog to carry around like a baby," Luca said, looking to Lori. "Do you spoil her?"
"I'd like a cat someday," Luca said, considering. "Or maybe fish. Something low maintaince. I don't know, though. Everyone says cats are really independent and stuff. I had one that followed me, but it wasn't a pet."

Lori nodded and laughed slightly. "Terribly."
As the conversation continued he paid rapt attention. How nice it was to be hearing personal information from a man who was previously just a fellow nerd and a cute one at that.
"Yeah, cats are good as long as you don't get a lap-cat. Clean their litter box, feed them, they're happy. The cat sidhe at the office pretty much just does his own thing all day. He likes the new selkie. She sneaks him people-food, so he'll sit in her lap if she wants. It's rare that he demands attention."

"She spoils him," Luca observed. "I think I met her, blonde, nosy? Asked if I was dating you." He smiled at Lori. "Now I can give her an answer." He paused and then added, "Maybe I could meet the cat sidhe?"

"Ah. Yeah, that's Maia. We're trying to set her up with our senior agent but he isn't having it," Lori said. "Of course she'd ask, and yes, of course. He mostly wanders around Research. Technically you shouldn't be there unless you're here for classes, but I doubt anyone will care. He's a big sucker and too smart for his own good. Seamus. Straight from Scotland. Do you know cat sidhe have magical powers too?"

"Set her up with...?" Oh. They were playing matchmaker. And it sounded like the guy involved was more stubborn than they'd expected. "I don't know anything about matchmaking," he admitted, "But maybe with time, it'll work out."
"I'll make sure to bring him something to eat," he smirked. "Cat safe, of course." Human food was generally bad for animals. Hell, it was bad for people half the time. "Don't they suck souls? Sort of like wraiths?"

"Neither do I," Lori admitted with a bit of a face and a little chuckle, "I don't really know why I said 'we.' I'm mostly just a spectator."
"That's how to get on his good side the fastest for sure. He'll eat almost anything, but we stay away from things that are poisonous for cats just in case. That's not exactly something we want to experiment with. Anyway. That's what people say they do, but the definition of 'soul' is kind of unsure. Nobody knows if there even is such a thing. They found him near a graveyard, but we don't have any graves at HQ and he willfully came. Plus we have a dead guy working for us, not the body but the spirit, and Seamus and he get along pretty well, actually. But who knows if a ghost is a soul?" He shrugged. "The one thing we know for sure is cat sidhe can curse people. One person a day. The curse is to think you've been cursed by a cat sidhe. Not even kidding."
