Far be it from me to unintentionally ruin the validity of your post by pointing this out but the imagery this provokes is beyond hilarious.

That's not really what I was getting at. All I was pointing out was that people like to play "jack of all trades" characters who can do practically everything under the sun, and ontop of that somehow MATCH characters that are supposed to be specialists. John Doe can fight with a sword, cast magic, use a sniper rifle, and make weapons, and he can do it better than the swordsman, than the mage, than the sniper, and the blacksmith. THAT was what I was getting at, and was the crux of my entire point.

Can people play the specialist role. Probably, I don't know. I don't run around taking surveys of people's roleplaying ability. I'm just pointing out the concept that people seem to fail to understand, which is "Jack of all trades, master of none." The problem is the lack of application of the last portion, and has nothing to do with the evolution of characters, nor people's ability to play a specialist role. It's just "This is being applied improperly."

I'm not talking about the mix of melee and magic or anything else, either. My character fights with powers and melee. Again, just talking about how these "Jack of all Trades" characters are surreptitiously masters of all their trades, which makes them somewhat Mary Sue ish.

Which, of course, was tying into my next point, which had to do with the idea of a "protagonist complex" that often goes hand in hand with the "master of all trades" characters, in that the character is portrayed as being able to do everything perfectly, and be a match in every regard to every opponent or obstacle. That was my point, that these two things (master of all trades and the protagonist complex) are bad for roleplaying, because they push out other types of characters and moreover don't show any respect to the abilities of other characters.

I wasn't really talking about anything else beyond that.

EDIT:: I mean, I don't agree or disagree with your post, exactly, I'm just not sure where it ties into mind beyond a baseline "you mentioned specialist/versatility once." There's not a whole lot else in common between the posts XD
