kouri-chan_xx Many forms of writing? :O Well technically Japanese only has one more set of alphabet than English (hiragana, katakana and kanji) that the Japanese people use and well kanji is more like 'let's shorten this because all this hiragana is making my eyes hurt' XD
Niceril I sympathise totally but Chinese well... it's really funny because here, my friends and stuff, all they can read are the chinese words XD Besides once you know the radicals and stuff you can easily deduce the meaning of the character.
KIYOUNARU??
Translate comics 3nodding That's what I do. If you can read hiragana and katakana and you have an internet connection, you can translate comics. (online dictionary: WWWJDIC cool sound effects dictionary: nihongoresources cool ) Chinese class was hard for me and no one could focus as kids brought in their gameboys (back when I was in kindergarten-grade 6) and no one really paid attention. I only had to cause my mom was scary ._. My understanding of chinese is bleh and I don't read chinese all that often.
I'm still grasping reading hiragana. I can read but very slowly and my vocab is that of a toddler's. Do they offer Japanese classes in Hong Kong? (I'm guessing there are since Japan is close) or did you self-teach?

HAHA! Gameboys wrecked my childhood learning too!!!
Yea I found a Japanese tutor (there are a lot of Japanese expats here, either they came here for fun like an adventure or whatever, or they followed their husband here for business and they have nothing to do, etc. Not to mention that HK is completely in love with Japan and its culture so tutors are commonplace ><) and I learned it for 2 years =D Considering that I learned it for 2 years I'm really not that great at it... but at least I learned my hiragana and katakana lol, and basic grammar.
I picked it back up a year later when I decided to translate Area no Kishi (my favourite football comic heart and my favourite regularly running comic. REAL doesn't count because there's one chapter every like 5 weeks and one volume a year >.>). Eventually I ended up using the Japanese raw to check the validity of my Chinese -> English translations and that was how it began.. =)
Wait a second.. kindergarten grade 6? How many grades of kindergarten are there? o.O
And well if you get serious about Japanese you'll find Chinese a lot easier =D
