Miyuki hoped Aethos wasn't looking for them, she wasn't sure if he expected Alassea to still be at the fountian when he was done. Her thoughts about not seeing him though were cut short by the shopkeeper.

"You were?"
she asked.

Did Aethos say something? Or someone else? It was always possible since it was their second day here. She knew how fast news could travel.

"Oh, yes," the man replied cheerfully. "I had a lovely chat with Prince Aethos this morning while I was taking his order. He told me that Alassëa was still alive, and was back in town, and about the group that they were traveling with."

His eyes glittered brightly in the shadows of the back of the shop. "Welcome back, Alassëa."

Alassëa tilted her head slightly to the side, a curious gesture instead of a greeting one. "Thank you ... did you say *Prince* Aethos?"

"He did," Miyuki replied.

Of course she knew that Aethos was a prince just like the way her ada was a prince. She didn't understand why this was important, the only thing different between a prince and other people was that princes (and princesses) had to look out for people.

Which her ada did anyways because he was really nice like that.

"What?"
she asked Alassea as if not understanding why she as so curious.

Alassëa tapped her fingers lightly against her staff. "It's ... a surprise," she murmured. "He ... never told me that ..."

And, as she had grown up as a commoner, without any contact with royalty, she had a very different view of them than Miyuki did. She was surprised and grateful that Aethos treated her as an equal, but at the same time she was a little hurt that he wouldn't have mentioned something that was - to her - quite important.

"Actually," Lin spoke up, "How did Aethos come to mention he was a prince to you? It's not something he mentions often."

She looked at the shopkeeper curiousity. In truth no one who was royalty in the traveling party mentioned it, hell, not even Emile knew he was traveling with royalty, because it was something they did not mention.

Well at least Earendil and Aethos, Lin didn't include herself in that (because she tended to forget she did have a title).

"That's okay," Miyuki replied, "Emile doesn't know neither."

The shopkeeper smiled at Lin. "Well, it took a while to take down all the notes and measurements I needed, so we were talking about different things ... and he talked about his homeland, about the rocs, his people ... and I'm a curious man, I asked questions."

"Perhaps I should ask him more," Alassëa said with a frown. "That Emile does not know doesn't make me feel much better. It's a different situation."

Earendil wondered what she meant by that. Did she mean because he was human? Or did she even realize that he was a human? She couldn't see to know, after all. Or did she mean because Aethos was (as far as he could tell anyways) courting her?

Lin chuckled though she was chewing her lip from trying not to glance at Alassea. Mainly because she had also noticed Aethos seemed to be spending a great deal of time with Alassea that in some ways it was understandable. The two must have talked about a lot of things, and probably the whole prince thing never came up, and it was an important thing to know.

"I see... I understand what it means to be curious."

Not that Miyuki knew that, it was only a title to her, kind of like a job description. Like being a doctor or something, not that she could clearly say that it meant to be royalty (only that they were supposed to help people).

"Is it really that important?" she finally asked.
PostPosted: Sat May 14, 2011 8:04 pm

"Yes!" Alassëa replied to Miyuki emphatically, hitting the floor firmly with her staff as if to emphasize her point. "It's very important! Royalty are the rulers of a country, and should be accorded the respect and - and -"

She struggled to find the word she was looking for, but she couldn't think of it. Instead of getting hung up on it, though, she just went on.

"And he shouldn't be treating me the way he is, he should be acting more like his rank-"

"I suppose this wouldn't be a good time to point out that I also am prince of my country, as is my brother, Daeron?" Earendil interrupted, trying to keep her from getting too worked up. "Lin then is, by her marriage to me, a princess, and as our children, Miyuki is a princess and Andarien is a prince. River is descended from royalty, though that branch of the family gave up their claim long ago. Even Luk is a leader in his country, though they have a different system, they don't have a monarchy. Shall I go on?"

Alassëa was stunned into silence. She'd had no idea about any of them ... and from the sounds of it, they weren't the only ones in the group ... who else then? How many? Why? Why hadn't they said anything?

"But he is acting to his rank," Miyuki pointed out, "He's being nice and helpful!"

Lin's mouth twitched upward listening to her daughter, because she had forgotten until Earendil mentioned it that she too was royalty now (not that she cared for the title).

"So he is treating you right, because he should treat you fairly, otherwise he wouldn't be a good prince. Princes should help others when they can, like ada! Ada helped a lot on our trip to Amon Darthir."

She smiled brightly up at Alassea not at all aware this was kind of different way at looking at royalty.

Lin put her head against Earendil's shoulder trying not to giggle at their daughter. While she probably hit the nail on the head as to the ideal duties of royalty, it still was so fricken cute to listen to her.

"I don't know why you're freaking out, it's just a job you're born with."
PostPosted: Sun May 15, 2011 2:55 pm

"I'm not freaking out," Alassëa replied shortly, "I'm - wait, are you saying now that he's just helping me because it's his duty and not because he wants to?"

"That's not what we're saying at all," Earendil sighed. "What we're saying is that royalty are people, too, and other than their rank and their job they're no different from anyone else. We're all here because we wanted some adventure, and Aethos is helping you because he likes you."

Lin didn't add she thought Aethos really liked her, because Alassea probably didn't need to hear that.

"And what I think Miyuki is trying to say," Lin added, "Even if she doesn't understand it fully herself, is this idea that royalty should be held aloof from other people isn't the right attitude. Yes, they are rulers, but as rulers it is their job to see to the welfare of the people and to treat them fairly."

She shrugged even though she knew Alassea could not see, it was just a habit out of something that she didn't think too much on.

"But as Earendil said, royalty are people and really the whole rank thing doesn't really come up unless we're reminded or duty is involved."

Lin certainly didn't think of it, she lived most of her life without one and she never called Earendil 'prince' in all the time she knew him, but she knew she was a bit odd that way.
PostPosted: Sun May 15, 2011 3:39 pm

"The only time we ever mention it is when we need to for diplomatic purposes," Earendil added. "Such as when we're first visiting a new land and have to introduce ourselves and ask for permission to travel, or ask for lodgings, or something like that. Beyond that, it really doesn't matter to us."

Alassëa still looked doubtful. "Still ... it's a bit deceptive not to tell someone, when you say you're trying to get to know each other," she said softly, her tone disappointed. Clearly she was thinking about Aethos, and didn't seem to care too much about Earendil and the others keeping their ranks from her.

"Well... I guess the question is, if he had told you right off the bat he was a prince would you have treated him differently?" Lin asked.

While it was true, it was just a rank and a job, the truth of the matter was people did kind of act a bit... odd around royalty, or they expected a certain personality.
PostPosted: Sun May 15, 2011 3:53 pm

Alassëa paused to think about that. "I suppose it would depend on how he requested I act," she said finally. "I'm not treating any of you any differently now, am I?"

She was being as stubborn as she ever was, if that was any indication.

"I might not have hit him as much," she added as an afterthought; and now her voice was thoughtful as she said softly, "He's going to need a good one for this, though."

Lin laughed softly at that, she liked that honestly. If Aethos truly was interested then he had done well, if not then he had a good friend to keep him grounded.

"Perhaps, I have to admit that was quite a shocker for you. He could have also forgotten to mention it though."
