The boy peered out from his hiding place. Nobody seemed to know that he had requested the last song, which he had desperately tried to keep secret in order to better slip into the crowd unnoticed. However, that hadn't stopped him from dancing furiously to the beat. It was his favorite song, after all.
Now the song that emanated from the stage was soft and soothing. It was a slow-dance song, the boy noticed upon staring out and seeing the couples dancing. An idea slowly wormed its way into his mind. He wanted to dance. More importantly, he wanted to dance with her. Slipping into the crowd as he had planned, he began to seek her out, softly singing the words of the song to himself in his head:"Birds flying high, you know how I feel Sun in the sky, you know how I feel Breeze driftin' on by, you know how I feel It's a new dawn It's a new day It's a new life for me And I'm feelin' good..."As he walked through the crowd he hoped no one was looking at him too much. He walked rather weirdly; he still hadn't gotten used to his long legs yet. Nor had he abandoned his rapturous fascination with his literally brand-spanking-new derrier. On occasion, he would discreetly squeeze it as if to make sure it was still there. As a matter of fact, his entire body was fascinating to him and he couldn't understand why. Yet, he felt right. Righter than the rain he used to soak up with the vigor of a caffeine addict on heavily-sugared coffee. He continued his search through the crowd, desperately seeking out the apple of his eye, the girl of his dreams.((So it begins...hyukhyukhyuk =3 And with regards to his derrier...yeah, he'll stop that eventually...maybe...XD))

Xei had wandered off in thought, sadly. It created an awkward silence, in which he contemplated the roof and stared at the food until his stomach reminded him of its fullness.
He sighed, just then noticing Alexi was gone, off doing something or other. Ah well, he planned to meet people, and it wasn't working so well right now...what with the Nester saga and the rigging of the stage.
Speaking of which, how had the man not tripped the enchantment yet? It must have broken somehow, just like his Glue spell earlier...how odd
Ah well, not much to be done about that...
Would it be worth the while to work on the 'Bot in the corner somewhere? ...speaking of which, where had he set it? Had he left it behind the curtains backstage when he set the spell? ...That seemed to be about the time he stopped holding it...it AND the book. Oh well, they're safe enough there.
So what, then? Xei took one look at the crowd, the great, gyrating mass of bodies....yeah, no. Perhaps an idea would occur after a bit of spellworking.
He grabbed a food-like thing and went to a clear corner to begin working on making a something-or-other out of it.
((bah, don't know what to do....)

 Taking another sip out of his 5th cup of tea, Bapp sighed sadly. He had spent the whole time at the food section, eating slowly, hoping that someone would recognise him, or find a lady that would catch his eye. "Can't be helped, huhhh..." He sighed again and went to get another refill of tea when he spotted a boy who seemed like he was around his age spending his time alone in a corner. Bapp couldn't help but wonder whether it was age that made guys partner-less at balls. He approached the blue-haired kid and took a sip out of his teacup before speaking. "You alone too?"(( Bleghhhh... ))

'Now if I put that there, move that over....now it should fall apart, if I did this right...' Xeiashi thought as he continued poking around his food, trying to make it break from boredom. He started to concentrate again and...
"You alone too?"
There was a tiny burst of food-powder from a failed spell.
"-coughcough-, ugh....yeah, a bit obvious I thought, but ....hold that thought. Sorry, but I think I need to get this off of me."
The food-splatter started to make a hissing noise, and smoke started to rise slowly from his clothing.
"OHCRAP! I really need to go. Sorry I couldn't talk!" Xei shot over his shoulder as he ran through a nearby door, hoping the seawater would help. The ocean was too far away to reach before....whatever it was, happened. The next closest water was...the pool, only about half the distance away. It was still too far to run, at least, that's what it sounded like as the hissing and smoke grew more plentiful. There was only one chance:
"Gotta test that one spell" [Catch the Wind
He got there barely in time, pulling his top shirt off as he ran and tossing it in the pool. Whatever that stuff was had started to eat a hole in his shirt, but in the water it simply burst into flame. The shirt was mostly fine, having been woven of carbon fiber, and thus more fire-retardant than most shirts. There was still the matter of the strange substance that burst into flame when it contacted the saltwater, not to mention the oddly-shaped marks on the fringes of the eaten-away area. He attempted to repair it with more carbon, taken from a tree, but the marks remained. They seemed to have migrated to the newly-patched area as well.
"Well, nothing to do about that. Maybe I can pass it off as some sort of decoration..." Xeiashi muttered to himself as he dripped back to the Temple. He was dry by the time he got back, thanks to a convenient breeze. He returned to his spot, but the boy was gone. The leftover food splatter seemed to bear the same marks, and he filed this away for later thought.
But now was the time to move around in the crowd again.

As the music faded away, Mirassou slowly opened his eyes, not realizing he'd closed them. The crowd was applauding like they'd done so many times that night, showing their appreciation for the music and the young singer. He bowed slightly.
"All right everyone, how about you switch partners for the next song?" the young man asked.
The couples in the crowd began to separate, the individuals looking for new people to pair up with. Once seemingly everyone was paired up, the band began to play the next song.
Just as he was about to start singing, Mirassou noticed an oddly-colored platform close to the mic. He hadn't noticed it before. What purpose did it serve? He would have to find out later; the crowd was waiting for the song.
"You're in my arms, and all the world is calm..."

After talking to Meta and the other felids for a while, Lorika had somehow managed to drift back over to the right of the stage without being noticed. It was dark outside by the time they were approaching the last few songs of Mirassou's set. Everyone was dancing or talking or eating, totally preoccupied, and she sighed from her little corner. They were about an hour and a half in, and no Gambino in sight. Such a shame. Then again, she hadn't really expected him to deign to come. He only funded their operation to keep them sweet.
She supposed she should try and mingle again. In her mind, she'd been keeping herself on standby just in case anything went wrong and her attention was needed. However, it seemed that after the few initial hiccoughs things were passing smoothly. Storm hadn't tried to get back in. (Why hadn't he tried to get back in...?) Zainire had fallen curiously silent. (That couldn't be good.) No, she was being paranoid. Things were going swimmingly. She could relax, and maybe have a dance before the night was out.
Still hours to go... speeches... the disco...
Stop! Determinedly, she stepped out of her little hiding place and towards the mass of dancers. No one noticed her, and so she stood quietly, clasping her hands in front of her, contemplating what to do since she hadn't been pounced upon as she usually was. She scanned the crowd, and to her right, near the door to the stairwell, a shock of dark hair caught her attention. She turned to look again, but as she did, the lights in the room lowered. A slow song.
She strained her eyes to see the person, but it was difficult. Almost like peering through... well, a semi-lit room with a lot of bodies in the way, which it was. Then, the person turned, pale face visible in the semi-darkness, and a pair of beautiful hazel eyes met hers. Her heart leapt. Ohmygod. Not only was it a guy, but it was the most gorgeous guy she'd ever seen ever in the past forever.
Actually, she saw an awful lot of good looking men on a daily basis, but meeting the eyes of a brand new one - and a stranger at that - always feels like the first.
Panicked, she immediately turned to make a getaway, and collided directly with a very solid someone in her way. "I'm sorry-!"
"Lorika! Hey!" said the person - man - placing his hands around her bare arms and flashing her a bleach-bright smile that could've brought the most unattainable superstar model to her knees. "Great speech earlier!"
"Liam! Hi!" she gasped, blood flooding into every capillary in her face. "How are you?! Is Gino coming-?"
His smile became knowing, teetering on the three-inch tightrope between charm and arrogance. "Nope, but who cares? I'm here, babe. Aren't you happy to see me?"
Lorika felt off-balance. He was the last person she'd expected to see. But just a few months ago... "I'm surprised you haven't turned up before tonight..."
"Ah, I figured I'd see you around."
"Except you haven't 'seen me around,' because I've been here, working for the Order. Don't tell me you just forgot about your commitments?"
"Oh, come on, Lori!" he cried, face crashing to the ground. Even Hitler's heart would've melted. "It's me, your old pal! We go way back, don't we? When'd you turn into such a stiff?"
She'd been about to correct him - it's Rika! - when his last comment stung her hard. God, sometimes Liam really did remind her of her ex. She was being pedantic, but he didn't have to point it out, did he? He thought he could control her. Well, she wasn't the easily-manipulated little girl she'd once been. She could tell him where to get off.
Before she got round to it, though, he'd taken a strand of her long, wavy hair in his hand and twirled it around. "You've always had such amazing hair. You need to wear it down more often! And I LOVE the dress!"
Just like that, all her moral objection dissolved. "Do you think so...?"
"DEFINITELY! Hey, you know I think you're beautiful, don't you?" he said casually, as if he'd spun the same line a thousand times before. His eyes had travelled down as if admiring her dress, but of course, the quality of the material and the excellent fit of the cut were the last things on his mind. He confirmed this a few seconds later as he touched her lightly on the hip. "I think maybe you should've taken that suggestion from the audience earlier."
She raised her eyebrow at him, but giggled. Good old Liam. "Of course you would say that!"
"I'm not the only one who would," he smiled, more than a hint of lechery in those brown eyes. His other hand went up to the brooch clasped at the center of the dress - between her breasts, of course. Her playful tone had obviously spurred him on. "Do you think if I yanked this off, the whole thing would fall down...?"
"Do you want to find out?" she flirted back.
"Actually, I'd prefer a dance!" he replied gallantly, stepping back and offering his arm out to her. "Lady High Priestess?"
"Oh, you're too much!" she laughed, accepting it happily.
"I still have the Valentine you sent me this year," he said conversationally as they entered the crowd, slyly adding: "Do you still have mine?"
She met his eyes, the glint in his reflected, as she placed her arms around his neck for the slow dance. "Maybe."
~~~~~~~~
Across the room, Lacine watched the priestess get picked up by that scumbag Liam, following her progress until she was lost in the crowd. She burned with anger. The way he touched her made her feel sick.
Lorika had complained about Liam to her, too. He'd never paid her an inch of attention before she gained her status, even though she'd wished he would for longer than she could remember. Why was she going with him now? She'd come so far - how could she still let a piece of dirt man control her like that? Why did she have to be standing out there now, somewhere, with her arms around him?
Burning with anger, she reached up and fingered her newly re-cut, newly re-dyed hair, and adjusted the front of her shirt. She'd been avoiding the priestess all evening, but that was the final straw. The next time she saw her, alone and free, she'd say all that she'd been rehearsing the whole day through.
[[Please nobody interact with Lacine. She's unrecognisable atm ;D]]
He did not know how he could have possibly missed it. He didn't know how he managed to overlook the details.
"Damn, I just -- Really, I can't believe it," he mumbled to himself.
Aidan craned his neck looking for the person that he somehow could not place. He took a sip from the drink he'd been absentmindedly nursing until it had turned lukewarm silently cursing himself. Scanning the crowd quickly, dismissing other red heads in the vicinity, he finally spotted the pair he was looking for at the other side of the dance floor. The person in the black suit was still turned away from him but now that Aidan had figured out what was nagging him about that person everything started making sense.
I feel really stupid right now.
Downing the last bit of his drink (which was more or less half of the cup) Aidan set it down on a tray and started pushing through the throngs of people.
He silently ticked off a checklist in his head as he moved towards the pair as quickly as the density of the crowd allowed.
Small built, shorter than most people (even girls). Check.
He darted past a couple who moved in painfully slow circles and were consequently blocking his way. Aidan had all but shoved them to the side looking up again to see where the two were. Still a distance from where he was the two appeared to have slowed down. He started moving faster knowing that if they were to rejoin the crowd he'd have a harder time finding them again.
Blood red hair. Check, how could I not notice that.. tsk.
Navigating through the people dancing he saw them stop and were just talking now. Picking up the pace he zigzagged across the sea of people trying to keep the two in sight.
Poor coordination and footwork. Check. She sucks even at dancing, should have figured.
As he drew nearer his suspicion was slowly being confirmed and he knew that the only way for him to be wrong was for Odin to have a twin brother, and that did not seem to be the case. He came up to them just as they turned so Steff was the first to see him.
The blond gasped as her eyes grew wide meeting his. Aidan saw her partner visually tense as Steff mouthed something to her. The red head turned around quickly just as Aidan had closed in the last few feet between them. From there he could see her face clearly and knew that he was right to suspect, though surprise wasn't something he'd seen on Odin's face that much.
Really, how did it take me this long to notice..?
Odin glared up at him and frowned deeply, the look of shock already a thing of the past.
"So it's you. And what might you want?" she said, her voice eged with annoyance. Steff was flailing beside her trying to look for an escape route. She did not let go of Odin's hand, preparing to make a run for the crowd as soon as they could.
Instead of answering Aidan gave the blond, who also sported a slightly annoyed expression, a wave and a smile before grabbing Odin's free arm and dashed away with her in tow.
"H-hey!! What do you think you're doing?! Steff!!" Odin protested trying to pull away from him.
"Hope you don't mind if I cut in?" he said giving her a smirk as he dragged them into the crowd.
Steff suddenly dug her considerable length of heels in and pulled back mightily on Odin's arm, her hands clamping down firmly.
"I DO mind!" she snarled, and it was suddenly clear that this was one poofy-pigtailed princess who wasn't to be trifled with. This guy had been riling Odin up all day, and her by close association as her newfound BFF. He was NOT going to get away as easily as he thought. "Get your own date, a*****e!!"
Aidan felt a tug of resistance from the girl he was attempting to drag away and looked back to see the other girl holding on tightly to Odin. He let out a sigh of exasperation and gave the blond a disinterested look.
"Pfft. Oh, c'mon, princess, you can have her back later. I just need to talk with her," he said tugging Odin harshly to his side ignoring her cries of protest.
"Ow! Hey, stop it! And what makes you think I want to talk to you?!"
He couldn't help but shake his head and tsk. "Come now, dear. The sooner you come with me the sooner you can get back to your friend," he replied laying on a sickening amount of sweetness.
"What makes you think she wants to talk to you?!" Steff snapped, quickly parroting Odin as she tugged back with all of her strength. Poor Odin was like a ragdoll being pulled between the two of them.
It was his next sentence that really got her, though. The red mist that descended over her blue eyes was visible to everyone within a radius of several yards. (Even if it did make her only slightly scarier than the slightly-scary little girl in a party frock she had been before the transformation... the change was still noticeable. Steff was evolving! Perhaps a few more shots of Aidan's arrogance and she'd grow horns and talons and rip off his face. Unlikely, but the potential was definitely there.)
"Ooh, you are just so full of yourself! Come on, Odin, dear," she said, imitating his sticky inflection with mockery. She circled forward with a pair of musical, clicking steps and, chest-to-chest, threw both of her arms around her friend's neck. Her eyes, however were levelled in a solid glare towards you-know-who. "Let's get back to our dance, before one of us end up with a pair of badly bruised...bits!" Steff finally cried, stumbling chastely over and eventually escaping the term 'balls.'
She paused for a moment, breathing heavily with anger, before her brain, for whatever reason, deemed it necessary to clarify the threat. "And it won't be either of us! ...Because we don't have any! Stupid-head!"
Aidan ran a hand through his hair. This was proving to be quite difficult and he tried to keep his composure. It did not help that several people had stopped what they were doing and decided to just watch whatever drama they expected to unfold.
Aidan could feel a vein threatening to pop on the top of his head and tried to bite back the irrational urge to hit something. Surely that wasn't the proper way for any gentleman to act and even he had, to a certain degree, a tiny bit of decency in himself which he reserved for such situations.
"How cute," he said evenly, glaring back at the blond who latched herself onto the other girl tightly.. "Listen, as much as I am all for this sickeningly sweet display of your lesbo love I don't take too kindly to any part of my anatomy being threatened. And being provoked into a fight, with a girl no less, tonight is not something on my to-do list lest I want the Priestess to personally skin me alive for doing so, even though I know I am more than capable of flooring your glittery a** anyway."
He placed another hand on Odin's shoulder and felt her twitch at his touch. She turned around to protest but found an eerie smile on his lips causing her to forget whatever she was about to say. His smile just widened as their eyes met and she felt the need to punch him in the face.
"So, powder puff, as much as I want to continue our lovely conversation I suggest you just let me have a little chat with our friend Odin here and after we can both go back to our enjoying this fine evening, okay?" The tone of his voice was level and laced with just the tiniest bit of sweetness, but there was also an underlying tone of seriousness, and when Aidan was serious.. well, let's just say he's the stubborn type.
Odin watched the invisible bolts of electricity shoot between the two as they tried to pummel each other with their eyes. She knew neither of them were the types to back down, and she also noticed that they had attracted a considerable amount of attention, that of which made her want to just sink into the floor and hide. So she decided upon herself that she was the object of their commotion and that she would be the one to end this nonsense. Just because a b*****d wanted to ruin her night didn't mean it had to be ruined for the other party goers in the form of a fight.
She sighed heavily and hung her head in defeat, and with just a tiny bit of anger in her chest.
"H-hey, stop it, you two," she piped up. "Let's just drop it, okay? You want to talk to me, fine. Just.. make it quick."
She looked back to her friend, an apology written all over her face. "Sorry, I'll just.. go take care of this quickly. Don't let your fun be ruined by this guy for my sake. And don't worry, if he tries anything I'll skip the threats and directly go to harming his anatomy." She looked up at him with a steely glare and he just beamed down at her, radiating arrogance.
Steff did combat with her eyes up until the moment Odin began to speak. Her eyes flickered and went to the side, looking up at her. Posture drooping, she looked around, noting all the people who were looking at the commotion she was causing.
She looked back at Aidan, and even though his arrogant smirk sent sparks of righteous fury hissing inside her again, she could suddenly see the situation in a more realistic kind of clarity. She was a little girl under the illusion that she could threaten a man much bigger and stronger than her. He could probably pick her up and throw her with as little effort as if he were tossing a watermelon, just like any of her dance partners. And it really wouldn't be a good idea to start fighting in here anyway.
All the same, she wanted to wipe that smirk off his face, and the perfect words sprang straight into her mind in her own voice. "You think you're so perfect, but you're ugly on the inside." Preferentially accompanied by a well-place slap.
At that moment, however, as if to seal the deal, the song ended, and the singer's voice rang out cheerfully over the speakers. "All right everyone, how about you switch partners for the next song?"
The people who'd been looking in their direction suddenly flicked their heads away, distracted by this new development. As people murmured and began to move around, Steff sighed and gave in, loosening her arms from around Odin's neck before finally taking them away.
"Okay... but be careful, alright?" she said, clasping Odin's hand in her own and looking at her pleadingly. "Don't let him take you outside alone."
The song ended and Alexi thanked Sam for the dance. As they parted ways, Alexi began looking for a new partner, as the young man onstage had asked. As she walked through the crowd, all of the potentially-interesting men were taken again. It was like a bad high school nightmare.
Just as she was about to give up searching for a guy to dance with, she felt a strangely familar aura nearby. It was hard to make out at first, and the girl couldn't quite tell who it was. But then it hit her like a ton of bricks.
"TOTAL?!" She whirled around, looking for the little plant on the ground, but he was nowhere in sight. Sighing, she turned her focus back to eye level...
...only to lay her sights upon the cutest guy she'd ever seen.
~~~
The young man looked around the room, desperately trying to find his girl. He wasn't sure she'd recognize him anymore, and he certainly wasn't sure that she'd believe his story when he told her what really happened. As he wavered on telling her the story of his amazing transformation or putting it off for a later time, he moved through the crowd when he thought he heard someone yell his name. As much as he wanted to turn around to find out the truth, he refrained from doing so. Adjusting his bowtie, he attempted to blend into the crowd.
Until he felt a pair of eyes on him.
Slowly, he turned to look around. But he didn't have to look far. When he found the pair of eyes, it was exactly the pair of eyes he'd wanted to see for so long.
It was...her.
"My stars..." he muttered under his breath. "She's...so beautiful..."
~~~
As they began to walk toward each other, their hearts leapt, doing cartwheels and somersaults in nervousness. It was a moment that could only be described as chemistry. There was no apparent reason for it; it existed only in the two's hearts and souls.
Despite the beautiful song being sung onstage, choruses of Etta James's "At Last" flowed through Alexi's mind. She couldn't believe the way she felt, the way she was behaving. It was as if the two of them were being pulled together by the red string of fate, or had been shot in the hearts by Cupid's arrow.
When they finally reached each other, Alexi realized he was about two inches taller than her. He had red eyes which would ordinarily scare some people but his did not look ominous or as if they had any evil intentions behind them. His hair was black and blue in hue; he wore a sweet-scented boutonnierre on his black pinstripe vest. He looked very debonair.
A silence passed between them.
"Umm...hi," Alexi said after a few minutes. "It's, umm...nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too," the boy said. He was quiet for a few seconds, as if he was looking for the right words to say. "You...look very pretty tonight." He took one of her gloved hands in his and gently kissed it.
Alexi felt her face get hot instantly. She knew a blush was spreading across her face, and fast. "Th-thank you," she stammered, unable to hide her surprise. "Umm...I'm Alexi. Alexi Silver. What's your name?" She smiled gently at him.
"Uh, umm..." he started.
Her question posed a problem. He couldn't very well just say his name and expect her to be cool with it. She'd never believe him. She might even be mad at him for leaving her the way he had. He glanced around looking for a temporary identity. Noticing a box underneath a table, he read what little he could see of the letters: "S...V...EN".
"It's...Sven," the boy finally answered. "M-my name is Sven."
Alexi gasped slightly. "Sven..." she said, her voice trailing off. "...Such a cool name..."
Just then the music changed, and Alexi came back to Earth. She was about to ask Sven for a dance, but suddenly there was no need. He swept her into his arms and onto the dance floor, instantly creating a space for the two of them. He whisked the girl around the space, sometimes so fast she was afraid her styled wig would fly off. It was only a few seconds before she realized what he was doing.
Oh my God, Alexi thought. He...can dance the waltz?!
It was true; the boy had swept her into a waltz. His steps and moves were perfect as they moved to the instrumentals from the band. Sven lifted Alexi into the air and held her tight as he spun around, keeping perfect time with the music. After it was over, he put her back down on the ground.
A few people cheered as the couple tried to catch their breath.
He took a deep breath. "I...I'm so sorry for my boldness, I...guess I was..."
"Possessed...by the music?" Alexi offered.
Sven looked up at her. "Yeah..."
She smiled. "It's okay," she told him. "I've felt that way too."
Still it was strange. This boy could waltz like no other. She had never known anyone that could before now. And he had kept time perfectly. Thinking back, the only other person she remembered that could keep time perfectly was...Marshall.
Her first crush. Her one true love.
But now...
She wasn't so sure anymore. Wasn't sure about anything anymore.
"Do you...still want to dance with me?" Sven said, breaking Alexi out of her thoughts.
She smiled.
"Yes."
((Ooooh, it's gettin' hot in herre, but don't take off all your clothes...yet...^.~))
"Don't talk as if I'm not here," Aidan said in an exasperated voice. "I'm not going to do anything weird to her if that's what you're thinking."
Odin wanted to much to around and do some form of bodily harm to him, instead she gave her friend's hand a reassuring squeeze and ignored his unsolicited remarks. "Of course I will. Don't worry too much." She offered Steff a small smile before turning around to scowl at the taller man.
With her arms crossed over her chest she turned to Aidan with a scowl and furrowed brows. "Well..?"
"Fiiinally!" His smile returned when he heard her growl with disapproval. "Hmph, since you're being so pissy about it I might as well do it properly."
"What are you talking about?" she deadpanned.
"Tsk, figured you wouldn't know how this goes." He held out a hand to her surprise. "May I have this dance?"
The look of sheer horror and embarrassment on Odin's face was priceless, the best Aidan could elicit from her by far. He didn't regret it even when she pulled her hand back and aimed a punch at his face. Luckily he caught her fist before it connected with his face and he clamped his hand on her wrist firmly.
"H-hey!!"
"Guess, that's a yes?"
"W-whatever, just.. let's get this over with," she stuttered getting red in the face again.
"Hey, whatever you say, dear," he replied putting on that annoying tone of voice again. Then again any tone of voice Aidan used made Odin cringe. "We'll see you later!" And with that he gave Steff another wave and took off with the smaller girl in tow.
Steff watched them go with her arms folded. She gritted her teeth and didn't respond to Aidan's goading farewell - at least, it sounded goading to her. She glared at the back of his head as he turned away, her expression practically aflame with murderous hatred. Sure, she looked more like a huffy pomeranian than anything truly demonic, but it was the thought that counted. Sometime soon those horns were bound to sprout.
With a sharp exhale, she turned to go, and suddenly realised she was alone in a sea of dancing coupledom. Her heart flickering momentarily with mild panic at being the black sheep in a slowly gyrating crowd of white, she tried to squeeze her way out between all the closely-pressed bodies. It sounds a difficult feat, and it was, but eventually she made it out of the sea... and there, right in front of her, was a typically scowling Gloria, her boyfriend and his brother. Meeping to herself, Steff immediately turned tail and attempted to prise her way back into the crowd, but the tiny gap she'd managed to force her way through had clamped shut behind her.
"Yo, blondie!" Gloria called. Steff made one final push for safety, then stopped trying to escape and resignedly turned to face her fate. Resistance was futile.
"H-hi Gloria!" she smiled nervously, giving her a little four-fingered wave. "Are you having a good time?"
"Yeah, yeah, lots of fun," she said, stepping towards her from the cold buffet, her eyes steely and hard. Lots of fun was obviously the last thing she was having. "I want to talk to you."
"You do...?" she said warily. Gloria was nicer since she'd become a teacher than before, but she still picked on Steff any chance that she got. She couldn't help but be suspicious. Unless this was about...
Damien placed his hand on Gloria's shoulder. "Woah, woah! What about this dance? It's the first really proper slow song we've had!"
"He said switch partners," Gloria snapped.
"Well... alright! You can dance with Sam!"
"Why don't you dance with Sam?" she bit back. Shooting her boyfriend one venomous look, she grabbed Steff's arm and hauled her off around the edge of the crowd, back towards the entrance, leaving the two boys standing, puzzled.
They looked at one another quizzically, and then, at the exact same time, their faces split into grins.
"Awesome!" they cried, and with that, each grabbed the other's hand and waist and began waltzing energetically around the buffet, nearly knocking over several helpless bystanders in the process.
Gloria happened to glance back at that moment, and her scowl tightened even further. Steff heard her mutter, shaking her head, as she turned to look back in the direction they were going. "Maybe they should've been each other's dates."
