And, the current situation does parallel the plot of Disgaea.
In a nutshell ...

*epic battle ensues*

Mid Boss: Hold the phone, people! (( he says as Laharl begins to sacrifce himself. ))
Laharl: I'm giving my life, like my mom gave hers to save me ...
Well, there's more to it than that. ^^;; But, the point is: Laharl turns good, partly due to Flonne's faith in him. And thus, Mordranna does the same for the Phoenix.
