Maegnis Ra arent high ranking space marines protected by cool wargear like an iron halo? Well the actual rules allow only one per army/force/whatever. They are artifacts. So obviously its only going to be some captains thatll have them. Chaplains rarely go unhelmeted anyways, and have a rosarius. Whereas librarians are just that, so thats enough right there.
Also considering the differences in influence, how long the chapter existed, victories and trophies, that could greatly influence their resources especially with things like artifacts. So some will, but not most, like Mykal said, they have helmets, but in the novels theyll removes them so they can better survey their surroundings, especially ones like the wolves. All the Ragnar books reference their chapters dislike for helmets, and actually I believe in the first Soul Drinkers book they sargeants had to keep checking to make sure their men were wearing their helmets because of the preference not to.

In the first Uriel Ventris novel captain Ventris wore a helmet until a heavy bolter shell made hard impact with it. He simply tore the helmet off and continued.
More of the above please. 3nodding

Someone should do a marine army in which the only models with helmets are in the HQ. "survive long enough, get a helmet."

Honestly, I'd just like to see more armies with completely helmed characters. I mean, it's not like GW's human faces are anything to marvel at - the helmets themselves are arguably more expressive! 3nodding

Well, there is a certain aura of mystery and ruthlessness to the helmeted marines over those who scream like they just shat their pants. Besides, whenever I see imagery of space marines with helmets on fighting (Or storm troopers and Kasrkin for that matter), there is something soulless about not being able to see the face, making it more sinister for the opponents.

Idk, I wish GW would have made the models proportional to how they actually are in the "universe" (ie. a space marine would be taller than an IG model).
I think that the unmasked/helmed Marines remind whoever they are fighting that they are human and not juggernaut robot people. And just like humans, you piss on us pirate we burn you to the ground. RAWR

I use the occassional non-helmeted head-- but i've made it a habit not to use the same non-helmet head more than once. I wish GW would produce head sprues, get some more diversity in there.

I prefer the helmet with bionics for my head honcho on that note. Nothing like imagining a hulking space marine with a glowing red eye in the darkness. cool

Exactly! Thats soemthing i love about chaplains and models like Dreadnoughts. or hell even with the eldar wraithgaurd. Facelessness or even just silence is creepy as hell in intense situations like that. For the topic in general, Im for unhelmeted armies for groups like the space wolves, and more feral groups, but i like my salamanders with their helmets on.

True enough, especially the younger pups in Space Wolves forces look good without helmets. It really brings out the feral part in them.
My favourite bare head for Marines is still the Cadian sergeant head. He manages to get more rage and emotion into that one shout then most of those testicle-less monks all put together.
