You're lost on the second part?
I want to fly a Squint. If I start facing a bunch of heavily shielded adversaries (Assault Gunboats, Skiprays, Missile Boats, and Tie Defenders) I'll be forced to install one of the most common imperial upgrade kits for the TIE Interceptor. The Gunship upgrade is a TIE Interceptor that has all 10 of its Laser Hardpoints installed. To on the chin, eight on the wings.
If you faced some more of those babies in Emsquad you'd be in allot more trouble.

They had this wonderful invention called the "X-wing" which basically godmods its way to victory.

Yeah. Em Squad doesn't have many regulars. And even then, we're stuck until another person posts.
And, if you don't have a bio for Factions yet, please get that to me ASAP!

They had this wonderful invention called the "X-wing" which basically godmods its way to victory. Another thing stellar: Your "Gunship" upgrade is hypothesized, not a canon craft. It is rumored such things exist, but they have never been found. Another reason for me to ground that idea. If that's not a kicker, you'll be finding yourself stuck at base for many missions as well. A normal Squint don't have a hyperdrive. You'll be stuck watching everyone else fly off, because I ain't going to put in no "special" ship for any pilot. Otherwise, what's the point of it being a squadron? If I let you have an upgraded squint, I'd have to let people have their eta-class jedi starfighters, their Tie defenders, etc. A squadron is relatively uniform in the ship it uses. I'm not going to break it up into a squadron with almost as many ship variants as it has pilots.

Not really... just look at the kill-loss ratio in the movies.
The rebels attack with 3 Squadrons against the 1st Death Star. 2 X-wings and 1 Y-wing make it back alive for the loss of 3-4 TIE Fighters (Addmittedly allot of them were by the towers and Vader)
Or the Battle of Endor.
You only see Wedge score 1 kill in the entire sequence... (Not to mention how many more must have happened off stage.) Really in the films the X-wing doesn't look all that great.
In the games (I mean the real games like X-wing, TIE Fighter, X-wing vs TIE Fighter, and X-wing: Alliance) the X-wing doesn't perform like a wonder weapon. A single good burst from a TIE will completely take down its shields, and a second burst will neutralize it completely.
In basic odds an X-wing squadron might be able to take on 4 Squadrons of TIE/Lns and emerge victorious, but only by the slimist of margins. Unfortunately if you look at the way most combat engagements worked, Rebel squadrons would often face odds of at the very least 4-1 and more like odds of 6-1 or higher.
EDIT: And the Gunship version is CANON it served at the Battle of Endor. exclaim You'll have to do some digging but Curtis Saxton basically proved it on the Star Wars Technical Commentaries.
So I'll install a hyperdrive... hell, you think thats nuts you should look at the modifications the Captain of the... God what was the name of the ship from Balance of Power. Avenger Squadron rings a bell.

But when have we taken on 4 squadrons at once? This mission is different, but its mostly 1:1 ratio of enemy to friendly. And of all people, I would hope that you would not rely on video games to push how effective vehicles are in combat.

At least I didn't mention the...
ROGUE SQUADRON games.
Talk about making the X-wing a God Ship.
