"I don't understand why he's suffering so much," Maia said, looking to Dari. She was puzzled. "Has he said anything?" She asked. "He never told me if he had feelings for me." She leaned back in her chair. "What did you have in mind?"

Dari nodded again. "Of course he has. He's my best friend. He's suffering because he does have feelings for you. He's trying to deny something that won't go away." He pursed his lips briefly for a moment. If he let Maia know all of the details, she would never agree. What was the detraction of a couple of statements if it all ended well?
"I think you need to become unattainable."

Wait, what? Toby had feelings for her? Suddenly things didn't seem as hopeless as they had just minutes ago. "That doesn't work. I tried."
"Unattainable?" Maia echoed, frowning slightly. "What do you mean?"

"We need to take you away from him. Physically." Knowing how much Maia loathed being alone he hesitated to give her all of the details now.
"Just for a while. We send you somewhere too far away to drive to, but not so far that we can't call. We can tell him you've decided you want to try relocation. It wouldn't be such a leap in logic. You really haven't been yourself lately."

Maia froze. Relocation? Going away? The time the agents had gone on that mission had been rough enough. She shook her head. "No," She said, after a moment. "I don't want to leave."

This was the reaction he had been expecting.
"I think a little distance could be good for the both of you. It'll give you time to think outside of his house, and it'll give him time to think without you every morning. Just for a little while. We could set you up with another agent or send you somewhere with other entities, whatever you want. I really think it could work."

Maia shook her head again. She didn't want another agent. She had the best agents. "Just a little while?" She echoed. "Then I could come back? How long?" she asked.
"Maybe I could hang out with Niamh?"

"I don't know how long. As long as it takes. A few weeks, maybe?" He had known Toby long enough to believe he knew how the man worked. "I'm sure we could place you near Niamh if you'd be more comfortable there. She actually is an agent herself, but she lives in Ireland still. That's quite a flight."

A few weeks. Maia swallowed. "No, I don't want to be that far away," she said. "Is there somewhere in Arizona I could go? I want to be able to come back soon. Would Toby 've happier that way?"

"I think anywhere in Arizona might be too close," Dari admitted. She would still be within a few hours' reach. Returning home, though, might be the distance she needed.
"Surveillance at your previous home says that people have stopped coming, save to use the private beach. If you'd like, you could go back there. We'd set you up with anything you'd need. It's still in your name, it's still yours, and Toby would likely believe you just wanted to go back home." Whether or not she considered Toby's house her actual home.

"I could go home?" Maia was surprised. Not at all as pleased as she had thought she'd be. "Alright. For a little while." She wasn't eager to leave, she'd come to see Toby's home as her own. "It'd be nice to visit."

"Yes." Dari might have sighed with relief were his lungs of that much use. "We can set you up with internet and cable, whatever you want. We'll get you some things for the kitchen too. It might take a while, but once you're out there I think things will begin to change. You can of course call any time you like. Have you used Skype before?"

"Alright. But I'm not staying long, don't go to too much trouble." Things for the kitchen would be nice. She'd be able to cook then. She didn't need the fancy stuff like cable or Netflix, as long as she took books along. WiFi was a necessity though, if she wanted to email her friends. "And things will get better?" Skype, that was the computer program with the blue icon with an S on it? "No, I haven't. You can teach me," she said. She stood, went to Dari and bent to hug him. "I'm really going to miss you, Dari."
She wished the alien could come with.

Dari barely accepted the hug, more thrown-off by t than anything.
"Yes, things will get better." Whether they found love or just peace, things would get better. "Yes, I'll teach you. We're going to have to go through a bit of red tape. You'll have to make an official declaration, it'll have to see a few people and then you should be on your way." He didn't want to talk about missing her. It was going to be terrible.
