You're not going to sell it or claim the character as your own, so you shouldn't be worrying about it so much. I mean, people are allowed to draw fanarts of the guy, so why would it be different if you used a different medium?
If you're going to ask for permission from the artist in the end, either send a pm or write a comment in the artist's journal entry (or profile) about it. It doesn't have to be professional or anything like that.

I'd like to ask... Are you afraid of Gaia staff in general? If so, I'd suggest you watch the Safety Marshall vid. These people aren't out to get people or anything like that. Not to brag, but I have one of the devs on my friendlist because I give feedback often (that was back in the past though). o_O;

Well, this isn't good. ^^; When it comes to higher-ups in general (moderators, admins, developers, artists, etc), they are all regular people just like we are. The only difference is that building/improving Gaia is their job. How would you feel if you were able to create an item for the userbase to enjoy, and they complain that the item is bulky and in odd colors? It hurts for sure as an artist, but if they were to come to you and ask if they could create something with your character, I'm sure you would feel honored (even though this is your job). As for the user base... Well, there's all kinds of people out there. Some takes internet seriously, while other people do not. You just have to learn how to differentiate what's worth your while. Trolls are out there to ruin your time, so why should you let them ruin yours? Ignore them or sit back and laugh at their attempts. Sure, some people have different opinions, but that's part of this whole "variety spices of life". You discuss something with one another, and you'll learn something new from it.

Say something wrong, and they will twist your words around and make you look "unprofessional". That's why the higher ups are afraid of the user base, and hardly communicate with them (besides being busy with work). ...Well, at least there are some users out there who cares about the staff's well being. o_O; I always feel good when I press the report button on the trolls. It's too easy. xd Conversation? You mean the pm with the artist right? I can't say whether they'll have the time to reply to your pm (this artist is rather popular for her rig art), but don't be too upset if she didn't pay a visit to the guild. Busy bumble bee after all, lol.

Tisha the Jackle Somebody HALP MEH! Im sending a pm to the artist that designed ringmaster, cause I want to make a ringmaster/cirque, whichever I can do, clay teapot in my clay arts class and want their permission first, I mean I'm not going to sell it or make money off it or brag about the idea, I'de say its baised off ringmaster, but I don't want to deal with copyright claims and such so I wanna check first but HOW DO I WRITE THIS THING! *head spins*
Copyright isn't going to hunt you down and hurt you.
You drew fan-art, didn't you? Well, you can do whatever you like with the characters as long as you properly credit them and do not claim them as your own.
