Lawrencew Oh, I never even suspected that you were aiming it at me... until now... xd But anyway, glad you're taking an interest in Cantonese. Maybe I'll write some more tomorrow (my time). Sorry about the sound thing. Its allright. If I get bored enough today, I'ma gonna go do some researching and see what I can find that might help me. Cantonese just kinda has something that makes it more interesting than Mandarin for me. Maybe its simply that nobody seems to learn it anymore.

But there's a reason for that. It's not really that practical. Unless you're into the whole TVB drama, Cantopop thing.
I really can't think of many good reasons to justify learning it, but to each their own, I guess.
It does seem a bit more impressive when a non-oriental looking person speaks Cantonese than Mandarin.

Well, I think I like it better because it is harder than Mandarin. I've found that I can only learn a language when it has a reasonable amount of hardness, or I get bored. Mandarin was extremely easy, and I got tired of it. Thats why I never could stand to learn Spanish or Latin well, they bored the heck outta me. But Cantonese with its random subtleties of grammar, and the wacky pronunciation of course, is much more of a challenge. Indonesian is the easiest language ever. Usually not my preference, but its so easy, I see no excuse not to learn it.
Its not like I'm going to Japan, India, Hong Kong, or Indonesia any time soon. I just like learning the languages. I intend to go sometime, kill me now if I'm destined to stay in America all my life, but ya know, funds are not in the best shape ever right now. sweatdrop

I notice that all those languages are from Asia. Is it because European languages are generally more similar to English (hence easier and therefore boring to you) than Asian languages? If you put in the effort, you'd be even more amazing, since you seem to have such a knack for learning languages. Were you brought up in a somehow bilingual setting?

They may be from Asia, but they are entirely different language families. Chinese, whatever the dialect, and Japanese, may be in close proximity, but they have nothing in common. Except for the old Chinese borrowings that came into Japanese when they adapted kanji, there is no similarity. They are pretty much on opposite sides of the language spectrum.
Indonesian is an Austronesian language, which is completely distinct from either of those languages, except for a few Chinese loanwords that have come in because of the large population of Chinese in southeast Asia. And Hindi, though seen as Asian by more western people, is not Asian at all. It is an Indo-European language, along with all the Romance languages and Germanics and all that stuff. From studying both Spanish and some Latin and then Hindi, I can see lots of cognates in them. For example, Spanish "mesa" and Hindi "mez", both which mean "table". Especially the Hindi "me" and "tu", "I" and "you" show the obvious relationship, since jumbles of indo-eurpoean languages have pronouns very similar to those.
So even though all the languages I learn are "asian", they are all totally distinct from each other, and one of them isn't actually Asian anyway.
And my family are the stereotypical monolingual americans, naught but t3h English.

Oh, I didn't think they were related, I just thought that the distance between the further Asian Countries and Europe would have made a difference in the general gists of the languages.

Kind of. But not that much. Asia seems to be just a big splatter of random languages.

Yeah, it's really diverse. I mean most Europeans look quite similar (in a gerenal way, not individuals) but like... Indians and Koreans look completely different!
Anyway, I gtg sleep now, I've been up for about 20 hours. gonk

Too me, Indians look like Europeans, but with dark skin. (and a high occurrence of unibrows). Don't know why.
Night night.
