"Do you want to go to the bakery with me tomorrow? I want to buy Annie and Lori muffins for breakfast. We could stop at the cafe, if you like." Maia was careful to avoid making it sound like a date. Muffins for her friends ought to be a perfectly acceptable trip.
"You should come too, Dari. We could all have breakfast together."

The boys shared a glance. Muffins? Sure. Muffins. Toby gave a thoughtful frown of agreement and nodded. "Sure, we can do that. We'll have to leave early, though, to catch them before they eat."
Dari privately thought that Maia was going to be very disappointed.

"We can leave early. I'll text them and let them know, so they're not surprised." Maia gave Toby a smile. He'd agreed! She was honestly rather surprised. "We should get Seamus something too... Maybe I could make him one."

"Cats really shouldn't eat pastries," Toby said carefully, "Maybe we could pick him up something at the fish market instead?" Or some normal bread, he supposed, but the sidhe was bound to be bored by that.
"Unless you mean a tuna muffin," Dari amended. Toby pulled a face.

"I was thinking a fish muffin," Maia admitted, grinning at Dari. "But I bet he'd like something from the fish market better. Let's do that." Fresh fish was better than baked fish.
"Do you think everyone would like that?"

"What, a fish muffin? No," Toby said, shaking his head, "I think most people would probably hate a fish muffin." He was teasing, of course, but there was something hollow in it. It sort of hurt to do.
"I think that's a very nice idea," Dari said to make up for the joking.

Maia smiled at Toby, shaking her head at him. "Most cats would," she teased. "Seamus doesn't seem to mind my cooking," she said. "But he does seem to like fish best." She looked to Dari, giving him a smile. "I thought so. They'll like the muffins from the bakery."

"Alright, so we'll head to the bakery tomorrow." That would hurt too. There had been a lot of bonding over pastries and coffee and in that cafe. He'd take the bullet to not completely lose every facet of his and Maia's friendship. Some days he thought it'd be easier if she just relocated. He had obviously hurt her in denying her advances, even if he hadn't done it with a true 'no.'

Later that month, Maia was in class. They'd moved on past Rome and started working on other things. Maia had lost interest though, by the time it was nearly time for Dari's classes to start. She looked around the room.
"So. I met your elf friend the other day," Maia said. "That redhead. Says he knows you." Better to play off casual interest. She'd seen the pretty boy librarian lurking in research and assumed.

It was unusual for Maia to lose interest. Lori had given in this time. She really didn't want to hear any more and that was fine.
"Oh? Luca? Yeah, he's big on research too, go figure. Any books in general really." What he really wanted to ask was if she was doing alright, but he was pretty sure he already knew the answer.

"He seemed the nerdy type," Maia said. "So, are you going to date him? He's kind cute." She leaned forward, elbows on the table. If her love life was going badly, the least she could do was ensure the happiness of others.
"Do you want to come over tomorrow? Maybe bring Rosie?"

"I'm not really sure? I thought we were, maybe not now, I don't know." It was complicated. Luckily the door opened and revealed the next teacher so he only needed to respond further to questions on visiting. "Sure, I can bring Rosie around any time. How are the fish doing?" As he spoke he was cleaning up his things. He and Dari shared a smile.

"They're alright. They recognize me now. At least I think they do. They swim up to the top When They see me." Maia was pretty sure they associated her with food.
"Hi Dari," she greeted the alien.

"Cute," Lori said. He had the odd feeling that Dari had a plan. He was just going to get out of here. He gathered his things and nodded goodbye to Maia. "I'll see you soon. Maybe tomorrow?"
Dari did in fact wait for Lori to leave, then sat down across from Maia with a determined expression.
"He's not budging."

Maia was surprised by that. She'd been expecting more complex readings. "What?" She asked. "Toby? I know. I don't know What to do about it. I thought I'd give him time and he'd change his mind. Maybe it hasn't been enough time?"
