Three winters into her life and still nothing had happened to earn her a name. The fear of dying Nameless was everywhere, in every look and every glance she met with her tribemates, even though she was still young. All of the foals born around her time of birth already had their names from great events. Not her. She was quiet and alone. She traveled alone, in the back of her tribe as they moved from ground to ground to feed and land to hunt.
Then came her turn.
The overcast skies should have been a sure sign to the elders to stay put, but hunger pushed them forwards, causing their leaders to forsake safety in the name of sating their gnawing hunger pains. Day had gone by and they had not eaten. Their minds were slipping...and so were their hooves. It wasn't even three days into their trek when the first fell from a ridge. Panic overcame the tribe. Their guide had fallen and a blizzard was setting in around them on this thin ledge. In their panic and cries of fear they triggered their own undoing; an avalanche. Overhead snow fell upon them, carrying many of the tribe up and over the edge to meet their guide's demise.
Only four remained. A foal, it's young mother, an elderly buck and herself. The mother sought to comfort her child, but it's cries only worsened. The buck did nothing but silently mourn and chastise the mother for being too easy on her child, saying cruel things such as that is was the foal's fault. It hadn't been crying they wouldn't be alone now. An argument broke out and the cries of the foal only grew as did the anger of the other two.
"Enough." The to-be-Nameless finally hissed, fearing for another wave of snow washing the remaining four of them away. They paused, looking to her. Had they forgotten she was even there? So quiet as to just fade into the background? "Let us not place blame on one another. We are not alone; we have eachother. Our voices now should not be full of hate, let us whisper of hope so that it may grow in it's place." She paused, looking carefully over the sheer drop to almost certain death. "Perhaps some are still alive. Let's find a way down and look for them. Maybe the snow cushioned their fall."
The blizzard continued around them, but with their voices shushed, giving words of encouragement, they braved the storm. They may have lost it all, but they still had Whispers of Hope to lead them through the grim times.
