tell your conductor that skill has nothing to do with what size reed you use.(also, there are reed makers who make flavored reeds. they don't sound very good at all, they're gimmicky. you could flavor your own reed with coolaid...it will deteriorate your reed, but it's flavored.)

I play 2 1/2s and 3s on my tenor sax, 2s on my alto.

Right now, I'm looking for some reeds that will give me a great dark, bluesy, melodic tone that would sound great in rock/ska. Though it seems that what would be great for ska to me isn't what would sound great for others.

i use rico jazz select and they have a pretty dark/bluesy sound. really mellow, but not so much that you sound stuffy. the mouthpiece i normally use is a claude lakey 6*. (alto sax)

Ashokan Farewell
I make bassoon and oboe reeds (bassoon from blanks and oboe from cut cane and 'staples' - aka the cork and tube part). I also make reed cases from brass candy tins and Styrofoam or felt. I use brass because it doesn't rust with moisture like the Altoids tins do. Also, they have a looser seal that allows moisture to escape.

I learned oboe reed making from my mother and bassoon reed making from the contrabassoonist of the National Symphony Orchestra (US). I've had to make my bassoon reeds because I like super-resistant ones that just can't be bought. Even blanks are hard to find with enough cane left to get a good reed for me.

I generally recommend that anyone who buys bassoon reeds should at least learn how to change the wires properly and replace them with quality wire (because the silver colored stuff is crap). There is technique to that too though, so if anyone is interested, I'll post a how-to. Learning to tweak one's reeds is really important for anyone serious about music. Even single reeds can be tweaked to make them harder once they've been used too long by trimming the tip a little at a time (while keeping the appropriate curve) until it is strong enough to play again.

Another tip I have is that when reeds start to taste really bad or get moldy, they can be soaked in lemon juice - bassoon reeds go overnight because they're so thick but I don't know how long for other reeds. The acid kills the mold and bacteria without destroying the cane like mouthwash would.

I'd like to see that how to. I've been using river city bassoon reeds, and they've been pretty awesome, they were hand made, but the lady who made them stopped because of her pregnancy, and now Me and my band director are trying to find another reliable reed brand, and I told him that I may look into making my own reeds, to see how they would work out.

because they're not the same. there are slight differences that actually do make a difference in sound. you can USE a tenor sax reed on a bass clarinet, and vice versa. when i played bass clarinet, i used a bari sax reed. i've even played alto with a clarinet reed once. there really is a reason that they make different reeds for all those different instruments though. an instrument will sound better if you're using a reed that was actually made for it, even though you CAN play on a different instrument's reed.

No offense or bragging intended, but the vast majority of saxophones players at my school use 3 1/2 reeds to play. I myself play on a 3 on alto, and that's not my main instrument. (I don't know whether you're also bragging about what size reed you use or if it's just the 1st chair part)

Yeah, I spent a very confused band class thinking I sounded weird until I figured out that I was using one of my alto reeds...Yeah, I'm real smart.
Not sure what else to say...I play a size 3 bass clarinet reed, and usually buy rico : D

not really sure what to put, but i play clarinet, and i play on like 3 1/2 since i was in 5th grade when i started. gets kind of annoying when you break a reed i've done that so many times when i accidently like whack it against my teeth..................

I've been on Rico/Rico Royal reeds ffor clarinet forever and just switched to Vandoren for a music festival. Vandoren reeds are freaking amazing! I love them.

But does anybody know the best brand for oboe reeds, for a student. I would make my own, but I don't know how to customize it to my embouchure and what not. :/

I play All the saxes and play size 5 reeds for them all. Yeah I'm a power house now!!

Vandoren is the way to go for Jazz reeds just sayin
