Another new day. A small sigh escaped Alexa as she left her duplex. She had just awoken to an annoying itch. She rubbed her arm absentmindedly. Must've been an exotic bug bite. Funny, she thought, she'd never been bitten before. Oh, well. There was a first time for everything. She was wearing a plain white tank top and a darker wash of jean shorts, flip flops fit neatly to her feet. They had become quite worn in and comfortable in her months on the island, and she had adjusted well to life now. She knew she was more stable after all that time, and her mind was somewhat sorted out now. Maybe now it was time to pay Maryke a little visit.
It was still very early in the morning, so Alexa didn't want to wake the lemur woman from her slumber. Once she reached the door, she turned the knob. To her surprise, it was unlocked. Tsk tsk, Maryke. Alexa pushed the door open and slipped into a dimly sunlit room. Maybe she'd surprise Maryke and fix her something to eat. She knew that lemurs liked fruit, so maybe she could cut up a nice fruit salad for her? That might make things a little smoother between them. And perhaps if things went well, the two could go for a dip in the ocean. Alexa was wearing her favorite black bikini, afterall. A small smile stretched her features as she continued to ignore the itch. Moving around almost silently in the dark, she found a bowl and began to slice up some fruit she'd found lying around.

Once Alexa had made a quite decorative bowl of fruit, she sat back against the counter, admiring it. There were melons of every shade from green to orange to red, and other small fruits. Pinapple rings and starfruit slices were also in with the decor. She smiled softly, gazing into the colors and thinking about how appreciated she'd feel if Maryke happily accepted the token of her unannounced greeting. But where was Maryke? Alexa hopped down and began to look. She poked her head into the bedroom but saw nothing beyond dissheveled sheets. Hmm. Maryke was gone? She checked the bathroom and came out holding her nose. The remnants of an alcoholic upset stomach were easily detectable, but she couldn't figure why it came easier than usual. She shrugged it off and finally turned her eyes to the couch.
Damn. There she was, out cold. She looked as if she'd been suffering the night before, and all the other signs in the duplex pointed in the same direction. Alexa set the bowl of fruit down on the coffee table gently, slipping the wine glass from Maryke's hand and trying to arrange her more comfortably on the couch, all without waking her. She looked as if she'd had a miserable night.

Alexa's brow furrowed softly into a frown as she watched Maryke's face. She didn't want the lemur woman to wake up, but she didn't want her to be uncomfortable. Alexa had already shifted her body so that she could lay more comfortably without chance of falling to the floor, and she moved into the bedroom, bringing back a throw and laying it over the woman. She took a seat on the floor close to her head and waved the bowl of melons benath her muzzle. "Maryke... Maryke.... are you okay?" Her voice was soft and concerned, holding an almost echoey quality.

Alexa giggled, watching the girl as she twitched in her sleep. She figured soon enough she would wake and be angry with her for coming in unannounced. However, she was mistaken. Instead, Maryke made the amusing show of thinking she was eating, then actually eating. Alexa set the bowl down gently in the woman's lap, scooting her rump up to the coffee table to give herself some height and a new perspective on the situation.
"Morning Maryke." She said, noticing that she looked like she was still asleep. "You looked like you weren't feeling well so I cut you some fruits... I hope you don't mind that I came in without knocking first..." Maybe while she's half asleep, she won't be as angry. Yeah, that'd be good. Alexa watched her hopefully, waiting to see what her next move would be.

Alexa watched Maryke intently, smiling at the shape she took as she munched down the fruit. Hurray, she had actually liked the surprise! At least... half asleep Maryke had. Alexa was still not convinced that she was a safe and welcome guest. And then Maryke slowly awoke, and Alexa's fantasies came crashing down.
"Uhm... well... I...." She started, but her eyes dropped. Again the itching in her arm was overtaking her senses, and she began to rub at it. It could have easily been mistaken for a shy or nervous brush of her arm. "I wanted to see how you were doing... so I made you some fruit... but you ate it." She looked up, eyes slowly bouncing around the face and into her eyes. She looked guilty, and she was hoping that Maryke would have it in her to forgive her. Afterall, she had made her more comfortable. That much Alexa was sure of.

Alexa was strangely heartbroken by the utter heartlessness of her former companion. Out? As in leave? She didn't know what had been wrong with Maryke earlier that had made her sick or forced her to drink, but she still felt as if she should be there. Something was bothering Maryke. She barely even seemed to notice that Alexa was speaking, even though it was obvious she had heard the words.
"Maryke..." she started, her eyes following the woman as she moved away, "Why can't I ever come to visit you?" She sighed softly, smoothing her hair down with a palm. "I mean it's not like we're enemies or anything." If only Alexa knew the irony in that statement, which was about to unfold within the next hour. She stood slowly, picking the bowl up only to set it back down again. She didn't dare follow Maryke into the kitchen.

Not... wanted.... Alexa sat for a moment, her eyes fixated on Maryke. Not wanted? She still had problems hearing that from Maryke, even if they had previously decided that it was over between them. Or had they decided? Last time Alexa checked, Maryke still wanted her pretty damn badly. Alexa watched Maryke with the lotion, finding it funny that her arm seemed itchy exactly where Alexa's was. Hmm. She shrugged it off.
It wasn't until Maryke had thrown the bottle of lotion across the room that Alexa tensed considerably, gripping the edge of the coffee table tightly with both hands. Her eyes widened as she watched her. Each vocalization was like a whip to Alexa's skin. She was instantly frightened. When Maryke started screaming for her to get out, Alexa wasted no time in jumping up and dashing for the door. However, something glued her feet into place. The groan, it slowly turned into a yell, much like a yelp. Something was wrong with Maryke beyond her frustration. Alexa slowly turned, her eyes wide and glassy. What was going on? Why was Maryke like that? Was she in pain? She didn't dare move just yet, so she just stayed there watching in silence.

Alexa fell to the floor, scooting backwards until her back was against the door. She couldn't take her eyes from the horrendous sight. It was like a horror movie, only worse. The heart-wrenching pain of watching someone she cared so much for in so much pain was almost unbearable. Her eyes began to fill with tears as she watched the fur sprouting from her skin, flinching but not having the sense or strength to do anything more than watch. As the change continued, Alexa began to cry, then to sob, calling out Maryke's name; begging that she'd be alright. She knew somewhere inside that she would be, but the pain looked absolutely unbearable, and it was like being stabbed over and over again to watch and hear her.
