There was a smattering of small tables and chairs in the entryway of the inn, but Kismet was seated on a bench much further back than that, carefully rocking the bundle that had settled onto her lap. Next to her was a slightly older woman in an apron and black dress, one hand gripping a broom. They were conversing in hushed tones, so as not to disturb the baby, but much could still be heard by those nearby when the noise level was not too high.

Kismet was almost radiant, despite the fact that she was both cold and wet. She had peeled off her covering, so that the only things she wore were her "business" clothes, which were rather transparent when wet. The baby's bundle, damp but mostly unharmed, covered most of this. When Kismet spoke her tone was bright and animated, even when soft.

"... and I'll be taking care of him. So you see, Alice, I'll need a bit of help, but it will really be okay I think."

The other woman, Alice, was not so content. She bounced the broom lightly in her hand, and looked almost ill at the state of Kismet's dress. "Charade, my dear, what were you thinking? Accepting care of this babe will only serve as a burden. How can you expect to take a customer for the night, and then have a crying child interrupt? It simply won't do."

"It will if it has to," Kismet insisted. She let out a sneeze and shivered before continuing. "The spares are in the back, aren't they?"

"They are, and I've no problem with you using the back to dry off. But if you think you're going to pawn that child off on me you've another thing coming. I have work myself."

As if remembering this the woman gasped and stood immediately, looking around. Whatever she saw soothed her mildly, but she gave Kismet one last stern look before taking her broom into the back.

Igrane stretched an ear toward the conversation, picking up what little she could during the hushes and lulls in the room. "Brother," she whispers softly into Morgan's ear, "it seems that our little mouse happens to be a lady of the night."

Morgan nodded to his sister. "This may prove more interesting game than we thought. Let us watch for a bit, see what kind of game she herself plays. It is not quite her hour." Sitting down at a table near the door, Morgan made sure he was still within range to hear and see his prey.

A huge splatter of water landed on the open book and caused Easter to squeal in fright. She quickly sopped up what she could with her blanket and slammed the book shut. As soon as it was safely below the floor once more she shoved the bookshelf back in place hoping it would keep the water from getting underneith. The rain started to speed up and the girl ran down the hall to the closet where her father's fall weather jacket was being stored. Her feet slid across the slippery threshold of her room and she threw the coat over the infant shielding it from the rain that was falling quite heavily now. Bundling him up onto the floor Easter looked about for something to keep her bed from getting too wet. The thin sliding door of her own closet yelled at her eyes from across the room and for the first time she was thankful that it had snapped apart. With at least part of the bed protected she scooped up the watching infant readjusted the coat so the two of them were covered and carefully made her way down the stairs.

Mud puddles were sprining up around the two as Easter made her way towards the Kensington District. "I don't have any money, Egan. So we have to just go to the place that woman mentioned." She wished there was some other way to find food. One that involved less tiresome wandering and not having to talk to strange people.

“Well there’s something you don’t hear everyday.” She said with a wink to show she was playing. There were more killers than she could count in this hellhole of a town. “You need to know how to survive in this place, but it is nice to have a hand every now and then.” She added smiling softly more to herself.

Ayira leaned in very close to Nekura their noses almost touching, “That’s a shame, because I am sure we would have a lot of fun.” She stayed there looking in his eyes for a moment before pulling back and laughing, “But I can respect your wishes Doc.” If he didn’t want that from her then she wasn’t going to press the matter, “But you know what I am and what I do, don’t forget it…” she added, meaning she might have another man…maybe.

He perked her interest when he talked about a way to mess with the real scum in her place tonight, with out any consequences. When he handed her the container she opened it to have a look, but as he explained she quickly closed it. “Well this is a nice little invention you have here Doc.” She said smiling softly with the possibilities.

After a moment she gazed around the room and summoned at tall strong looking man over to her, “Dusk, take this gift and bring it to Spider, tell him it a little flavoring for the Dogs water supply.” She said with a wink as she handed the container over to the man. He smiled back before rushing out of the Rat to do as he was told. Turning back to her new “companion” she tilted her head to the side in a cute sort of way, “Nice to have workers and connection like that…” she admitted. “But lets discuss something more appealing.” She said moving closer and playing with his hair again, this time just ruffling his feathers a bit.

She just wanted to see him nervous, she knew he wasn’t interested in her like that, though it was a pity.

Deftly, the lieutenant struck the deathblow to his foe. It had been a long and gruesome battle, with the blood of his enemy fresh on his arms and nicks cutting into the metal of his sword.

In short, Lt. Valerius Saunderly was exhausted. He bowed to his opponent: a now freshly trimmed shrub.

The juice from the plant's leaves made his hands stick the hilt of his broadsword as he returned it to its sheath on his back. His left arm was starting to ache, which had been one of the reasons for his stopping his practice training.

As his mercenary business wasn't getting many takers, Valerius had taken to practicing his skills on the local plant life surrounding the shops in the Kensington District. Thus far, he'd covered: stealth tactics (hiding in flower beds and bushes), direct confrontation with the enemy (stabbing plants), negociation and intimidation policies (whispering threateningly to the odd petunia), and currently was working on his one-on-one duelling assault (stabbing plants again, but more honorably).

And, apart from keeping him ready for warfare, it allowed Valerius to showcase his skills for potential employers.

He sighed, then checked the area around him for possible hostiles. Finding none, he plotted a course for the Harbor, ready to return to his base and acquire fresh bandaging for his arm.

As time passed, Emi made it back to the Lost district, using the quckest routes possible. She waved to one of the mercenaries as she walked past him calmly (though still smiling) attitude. She decided that due to the icky weather, and the fact that she may have a client come to her store tonight she decided that her plan to steal that ring would have to wait for now. It will still be there to steal tomorrow...

Emi walked into her book store "I'm home!" she said in a cheerful way, though no one would reply to her...she was use to that, just a habit of hers to do when she entered her book store. She grabbed a candle and lit it, once the candle was lit she walked around the book store lighting the other lights till it was bright inside of the store. Placing the candle down on the table she dropped the bag of supplies that she had bought from the old man and started to sort through it, waiting for any customers to stumble in or the client to walk in

Sad thing was, he WAS interested in her in that way. He was just swallowing it and keeping it down and as far away as he could. He shifted a bit as she played with his hair, "I can tell you're enjoying the effect you're having on me Ayira."

He looked her in the eyes, "And I know your trade, but...I can also see that you're still lonely regardless of it. You could basically have any man you want, but they only want you for one thing right?" he said, his tone solemn. He tilts his head to the side as he watched Ayira's eyes.

"...I hope you manage to find what it is you truely want..." he said quietly to her and gave her a smile, "You're heart's deepest desire."

It was true she loved what she was doing to him, maybe that was sick of her, but it was true. “I wouldn’t say enjoy, love it a better word for how I feel about teasing you.” she said in a whisper, moving in closer to him. He really had beautiful eyes this one…it really was a shame.

However she stopped short as he started to talk about her loneliness, and her hearts desire. In fact she stiffened as he spoke, as if scared, hurt and angry all at once. Her eyes flashed to his and you could see the mix of emotion in them. “Your wrong, I have no desire Doc, and I am never lonely! I am the most desired woman in this District and your right I can have anyone I want…so I am never lonely.” her voice rippled with all different emotions as she tried to control her temper.

Who did he think he was telling her what she felt, she desired nothing, and needed no one. She started to get up from her seat, not sure of what to do, no one ever talked to her like this. Should she leave or stay…that was the real question.

Nekura shook his head slightly, "I apologize for speaking what I saw...I am sorry Ayira, it was rude and unkind of me to be so blunt and forward about it." he set his drink down and stood up.

"I should probably go...I think I might have overstayed my welcome with you and have angered you to boot..." He shook his head and looked to her. "...and...for the record...if you truely wanted me...I know you are smart enough to take me all for your own..." he said quietly before he made his way towards the exit of the Red Rat.

It was all well and good that he had suddenly lost his apetite since his food has not yet arrived. Dang, he thought to himself, it would figure I would fall for a lady of the night.

Ayira stood there for a long time, thinking over all the things this wonderfully odd man just said to her. He actually apologized to her, which no one ever did unless she was threatening him or her. But that wasn’t what stuck in her mind the most it was his last comment.

”If I really wanted you?” she said softly to herself. Did she? Did she really want him all to herself? She never kept a man longer then necessary, but here is one she just met and offered her home to him. What did that mean? Did it mean she was falling for him?

”No…” she said, not even believing herself as she said the words. For as he walked away a pain swelled inside her, one she never felt before. It was if her heart was walking out the door, what did it mean?

Against her normality Ayira rushed through the Rat after him, catching up with him outside. “What did you do to me?” she asked, not angry if anything scared. ”I am void of emotions other than pleasure, so tell me…what did you do to me?”

Figures she would fall for an eccentric Doctor, even more some one not from this Hell.

He turned to face her and tilted his head to the side, "...I didn't do anything to you...not that I am aware of beyond sewing your wounds up and treating you with respect and kindness..." he said to her. He looked a little confused at her question, and quite surprised at her chasing after him.

"...I...think we should probably discuss this in private...at least if we walk off together, your...customers might assume operations as normal and stop thier gawking." he stated quietly, showing concern for her reputation that he believes she has carefully built up.

”The why do I feel…” she started to say before she trailed off, noticing her customers looks as well. Looking at them she crossed her arms as if daring them to say something. With this one gesture they quickly went back to what ever they were doing.

”I have work to do in my office, in the building next to this. Do what you want, know you’re still welcome to stay there but I have no time to be walking along discussing love with you.” she said quickly, not noticing she said love. Ayira handed him a small silver key, ”It opens the back door to the place, take your walk Doc, just lock the door when you come back…if you choose to.” she added before turning and heading to her own home.

He looked down at the key in his hand and hide it in a pocket hidden within another pocket within the inside of his coat. This was done once he was out of view. He made his way back to the abandoned building where the goons were waiting for him.

"Good, good..." He said as he looked at the supplies they brought him. He wasn't going to ask how they got it, best he didn't know. He then walked to them and handed them each a wayfarer's cake, "...Enjoy...It's more filling then bread."

The men left and he began to take inventory of what he had available to him now.

"Rain. Could be worse, I suppose..."
Rubido slid out from underneath his handiwork to peer at the darkening sky, his eyes almost shut against the fat, cold droplets. All around him, activity in Kensington drained away, into sheltered corners and shady doorways, small houses and inns. The dirt and muck of a hundred people's passing gave way before the rain, dissipating in places to reveal the worn, shattered remains of old cobblestones. As the rain intensified, Rubido scrambled to pound in the last few nails and find someplace warm himself. Colds, in this day and age, could be costly things a "working" man had neither the time nor the luxury for.

Rubido paused and glanced longingly at the heavy clouds, wondering just when he had last enjoyed a good rainstorm. He met the bright eyes of his still-seated employer with a distracted smile and smugly announced his project's completion.
The old, silver-haired baker did not look like a limber sort of man, but laughed at Rubido's outstretched hand, stood, and grabbed him by the wrist in one smooth motion. "My lad, don't be so assuming! It'll get you in trouble one day!"
The younger man laughed, but didn't react past freeing himself and following the man with a slightly more dangerous, or at the very least alert, glimmer in his eye. Anyone with money and time enough to contract someone to build a stall for them when the ingredients for their craft were so rare would not be a profitable enemy. Besides, it was a good little show for the few shoppers still about.
After surveying the newly remodeled cart, oblivious to wet and mud alike, the baker grunted satisfactorily. "It'll do. I expect you back here late tomorrow morning to pick up my end of the bargain? I will not bake more if it goes past your definition of adequacy."
"Of course. And what should I hold on to in the mean time? I wouldn't want to assume anything, you see, and miss you in the morning."
With an un-amused glance, the baker took something out of his satchel- a round, flat disk about the size of a small orange, with a brilliant green cabochon of spun glass set at its center. "A trinket, and nothing more. But worth the bread if you found a good price for it." He retreated back to his shelter, shouldered his small bag and trotted off without another word, leaving a bemused Rubido to turn the disk over in his deft hands.

The rain, by now, had soaked clean through the young man's shirt and came close to doing the same to his hat, which the baker had left on a pole by his seat. Rubido sighed, but a soft smile spread across his lips. So he had not enjoyed a storm in a time? He would do so today. With a resolute tug to straighten his hat, he half-strode half-skipped his way back towards the harbor where, hopefully, he could find a hot, stiff drink to enjoy outside.

"Alright, Princess."

Larry found his front door, which was lying civilly next to his doorframe. The hinges were still attached, but not to the frame, which accounted for its placement.

"I know it doesn't look like much, but this is just the upstairs. We're remodeling right now, and still waiting on those furniture shipments from Milan."

What hadn't been plundered was either burnt, broken, or unidentifiable. Soft light filtered in broken beams from the ceiling and walls, and everything was damp. Larry shifted the baby to his hip and lifted up what very much looked like a piece of the floor.

He called down into the consequent set of stairs, "Fifi, it's me! Hold off on the whole attack number!" Then made his descent, closing the make-shift door back behind him. The basement was a good size, and tastefully decorated in spite of a sparsity of useful decorations. There were smatterings of clutter here and there, but for the most part Larry kept the space clean. The largest buildup was from trinkets...useless accessories Larry had unquestionably accepted as payment for detective work.

"Now, now, settle down. We've got a new...err, member of the family? I mean, I guess she was always around. Or has been around as long as I have? Or I- Well, I'm not clear on the whole business, but the important thing is that you and I have got a kid to raise."

Fifi, the chicken Larry was trying to explain things to, was adamently asleep.

"We're all going to have to make some changes, but apparently we're going to save the world, or Wynander, or something, so I expect you to behave and possibly up your egg production. That's only possibly, we don't want to wear you out, but you should try your best for the sake of the family. Gilmans look out for each other, you know."
