Yuki was washed away by the salty water, the force of the liquid combined with the salt getting in her open wounds was too much for her, causing her to faint as the sea water (or so I assumed) settled on the ground.

I let her back into her ball and hung my head. This was the first taste of defeat I'd had since I fought the Striation triplets years ago. My ego wasn't weathering its sting quite well, but I had the mental wherewithal to lose gracefully. I bowed to Skyla like a gentleman, thanked her for the battle, and walked out.

Once I left the gym, Keiko was holding on to my arm asking. "Hey, are you okay? You looked like you were about to fall into depression for a moment."

"I'm fine," I assured her, looking her in the eyes and smiling as we walked. "To be honest, I've had so many wins by the skin of my teeth, it may have been getting to my head a bit. The reality check is appreciated, if momentarily unpleasant. Besides, I can challenge her again later.."

"Really?" Keiko asked. "Even Burgh?"

"Nah, Burgh was light work," I shrugged. As soon as I said that, Rala let herself out of her ball looking like she was about to ptich a fit.

"I saw it! I saw our victory! We would have won if that voice didn't interrupt me!" she shrieked telepathically, drawing the eyes of everyone around us. I had to grab her shoulder to get her to calm down. "Hey, it's okay. We've been riding so high lately that we were bound to slip up at some point. We can just train some and try again. It's gonna be okay," I assured her.

Rala calmed down, but was clearly still not happy. "If I ever figure out where that voice came from-" Rala started to say, but she stopped when I patted her head. "It's going to be alright. Just calm down," I insisted. She relaxed reluctantly after that and went back in her ball.

Keiko and I headed out of town to look for trainers to challenge. I didn't take long before I had Rala fighting a bunch of Fighting, Water, and Grass-types thanks to her move coverage. I had Samurai fighting some Fire-types and Brunor fighting some Normal and Steel-types. Keiko even took on a few trainers as well just to pass the time. After a while, I found a cave and the two of us started exploring it in search of some strong wild Pokemon, but nothing that was there really stood a chance against our trained and battle-tested Pokemon, which I should have honestly expected.

That whole training montage took a few hours, after which we visited the Pokemon Center in town before we re-entered the gym so I could take another shot at Skyla.

"Yo! Welcome champ- oh, it's you again. Terashi, right? I take it you're here to re-challenge Skyla?" The gym guide said immediately upon seeing Terashi enter. "The gym leader was hoping you would return for a rematch, she always hates to see a trainer gets this far and fail. Any who, get up there and go give Skyla everything you got! She's waiting for you."

Terashi would eventually make it to the upper level of the airplane hanger where the battlefield was, the massive fans rotating lazily for now but as he knew would tick up before it was over. The ceiling was also already open, everything ready for an official gym match including Skyla who was standing on the other side of the field, awaiting the challenger.

"Hey Terashi! I'm so glad you came back! Think you're ready to earn my badge this time? I hope so! I want to see you take flight and soar all the way to the Elite Four! Come! It's time for lift off!" With that said Skyla spun around and tossed out a Pokeball, releasing from inside her Swanna, her signature Pokemon. "You got so far last time I'm offering you the shot at my badge with a quick battle. One Pokemon each, our best one. But I'll warn you, there is a trick to this so be cautious with your selection." She said with a smile.

One pokemon each... that notion alone made me want to call out Brunor, my gymbreaker. But this WAS a Flying-type gym, and he wouldn't make it. Rala was probably out of the question as well, sine she's already seen what the Gardevoir is capable of. It was honestly a good thing that I let Samurai get involved in the training. As long as Skyla didn't call out her Pelliper, Samurai stood a decent chance.

"I'm not a mind reader, but I can guess a couple of options that WON'T work based on our last match. So, let's see what you think of this," I offered, letting Samurai out of his ball. Samurai cheered as he stood on his feet, the Everstone on his neck swaying slightly in the artificial wind. From the looks of things, he was excited to get to battle, and that was a type of energy I could use. Probably needed, in all honesty.

"The challenger Terashi and his Dewott face Gym Leader Skyla and her Swanna in a one on one rematch for the Jet Badge! No substitutions of Pokemon and no items other than held items are allowed! On my word let the battle...begin!" The gym's judge declared from the side lines, throwing his hand down to indicate that they should begin.

"Swanna, we must protect the reputation of the Mistralton Gym no matter how many times a challenger faces us! Go, use Feather Dance!" Skyla commanded.

With a pleasant and soft cry Swanna would fan its wings out before giving them a vigorously flap and lifting itself in the air. Once airborne the swan would begin to flap their wings with great force in Samurai's direction, sending a flurry of loose feathers flying towards the Dewott and the moment the feathers physically touched the Pokemon it would feel its physical strength leave it, the feathers then gently floated down onto the ground where they would remain.

...I choose poorly. Samurai was a mixed attacker, but his moveset was mostly physical moves, He really only had one special move that'd be normally effective due to Swanna's type, and that Feather Dance made it pointless to rely on the superior half of his moveset. Skyla played me like a fiddle, but the blame mostly lay with me. Why I focused on Samurai instead of going into this knowing she knew the Pokemon I used last time was beyond me. The hell was I thinking!?

No. It didn't matter. There was no turning back, now. All I could do was grit my teeth and make her regret tricking me. "Samurai, use Air Slash!" I ordered with my full chest, coming awfully close to screaming. Luckily, Samurai shared my feelings of being tricked and put everything he could into making a huge, fast Air Slash. His favorite move for showing his disdain of a situation had just been nerfed, and he wanted Swanna and Skyly to know how annoying that was.

The slashes of Flying energy would rack across Swanna's body causing the bird to let out a bit of a shrill cry in pain, taking some feathers along with the attack, however the swan largely endured the Air Slash and maintained its positioning in the air. It wasn't going to go down that easily.

"Come Terashi, I know you two have more in you than that! Show me the power of the jet stream of your bonds! The bond that will carry you both high into the sky of victory! Otherwise...I will show you how high we can soar." Skyla said with a smile before turning her attention back to her Pokemon. "Swanna, show them our Air Slash!" She commanded her bird.

With a chirp Swanna would begin to flap its wings vigorously again, sending blades of Flying energy at Samurai, carried by the gust of wind it was generating. If Terashi wanted any hope of winning this fight they were going to have to get way more creative, just raw power was not going to cut it this time.

[Rolling for flinch chance. If 1-3 Swanna flinches.]

It didn't take me long to realize that me thinking Air Slash was our only useable move was the result of panic. There were a couple other options that could work, though one in particular would require a bit of setup. If luck was on my side, the moves I were thinking of would inflict a status effect that would shift the battle significantly to my favor, but the chances were slim of that happening.

I shook my head to get myself to focus as Samurai landed on his rear end, the foe's Air Slash knocking him off his paws. "You good, Samurai?" I asked, hoping my friend would respond quickly. Unfortunately, he didn't. Swanna's Air Slash benefited from a same-type attack bonus that Samurai's Air Slash lacked, and he was currently locked in place due to flinching. That didn't make this battle any easier for us.

With Samurai flinching that left Skyla and Swanna a large opening to deliver another blow to their opponent. While the Gym Leader in Skyla saw this as an opportunity to punish the challenger the fellow Pokemon Trainer in Skyla felt bad for Terashi, his second challenge not going so hot. "Luck may not be on your side again, challenger. Don't get discouraged though, while I must defend the honor of Mistralton Gym I do hope you manage to pull through in the end. Swanna, use Aqua Ring." The woman commanded her Pokemon.

Instead of using the delay in Samurai's actions to deliver another blow the Gym Leader instead decided to use the down time to safely execute the healing move Aqua Ring, the swan singing a pleasant song as rings of overlapping water began to form around itself, said rings lazily spiraling around its body. The rings would remain there for the foreseeable future, the waters of the rings slow healing Swanna over time. This now meant even when Samurai dealt damage to Swanna it would heal a little bit in return and make taking it down that much harder. Things just kept getting worse for Terashi.

This was going to be a rough match, but it only just began. Samurai was suffering, but he was pretty far from being knocked out. He was feeling better, though, having regained his composure. He was ready to continue this fight. "Alright, let's get the ball rolling. Use Ice Beam," I told Samurai. The Dewott was all too happy to get back to fighting, and in showed in the vigor with which he charged the Ice Beam in his upper paws, leaning back before lurching forward to launch the Ice-type move at his foe. It'd normally be a valid play in an Flying-type gym, but Swanna was a Water-type on top of being a Flying-type, so the move would prove to be normally effective. Still better than it being ineffective.

(If 1 then Swanna is frozen solid.)

Dewott would charge up and fire off the Ice Beam at its feathered opponent, the beam of freezing energy slamming into the bird not only causing the bird to cry out in pain but it also managed to freeze a little bit of the Aqua Ring as pieces of ice clattered onto the ground, the rings quickly repairing themselves however as it also healed some of the damage Swanna just took. Its Water type prevented it from suffering a super effective hit and the Aqua Ring further mitigated some of the overall damage but regardless it at least was some damage which was better than none.

Shaking off the Ice Beam's damage, fluttering its feathers a bit as it shook off bits of ice, the Swanna locked its sight on the Dewott opponent as it prepared itself to continue this battle, the bird with plenty of fight left in it. "Renewed vigor from our opponents, we love to see it, right Swanna?" Skyla asked her Pokemon, the bird letting out a chirp of confirmation. "Good, glad to hear it! Let's keep this battle going then. Swanna, use Icy Wind!" Skyla ordered her Pokemon.

With a cry the bird would begin to flap its wings vigorously, kicking up a stiff gust of chilly wind which would sweep over Dewott and the surrounding gym floor. While it was an ineffective move it still did some damage but most importantly the cold would sap some of Samurai's reflexive strength, making it slower as well as causing a thin sheet of ice to form over the gym floor, Samurai now finding it slippery.

Terashi might start to put the pieces together as he realized what Skyla was doing. His Pokemon's physical strength was sapped via Feather Dance, its speed damped with Icy Wind, the field lightly frozen over, and its foe now had a healing factor with Aqua Ring. This entire battle was greatly stacked against him, making winning a herculean task, an uphill fight all the way to the end, provided he could even get there. What could he do to try and save this battle?

I couldn't help but smirk as Samurai barely felt the Icy Wind blowing through the battlefield. Sure, the speed reduction wasn't helpful, but speed wasn't the be-all, end-all of Pokemon battles. Preventing your opponent from using stronger moves, however... "Samurai, use Encore!"

Samurai began cheering in place, glazing Swanna for its immaculate, magnificent use of Icy Wind and all but begging the the mighty bird to show him more of that move while using Nomral-type energy to compel Swanna to repeat its last action in battle. And while Swanna was busy lowering Samurai's speed, we could focus on finding a way to turn this fight to our advantage.

Swanna perked up as Samurai cheered for it, the bird almost blushing as it turned its head away from Samurai and made an 'oh stop it' gesture with its wing. The bird would then turn back around and stand up a little straighter before letting out a happy chirp followed up by another Icy Wind, the Swanna flapping its wings vigorously to conjure up another chilling gust of wind. The layer of ice on the battlefield got thicker.

"Oh! That was clever! Heck, I didn't even see that one coming. Good job!" Skyla complimented Terashi.

"Thank you," I replied, taking the the compliment at face value, to an almost dickish level. "Now, if you don't mind, I intend to take full advantage of this." I knew that repeated Icy Winds couldn't do more to Samurai than slowly chip away his health, and I was honestly willing to sacrifice his reaction time if it meant getting an advantage elsewhere. "That Swanna seems to appreciate your applause, Samurai. Why don't you show her your dance moves as well? Use Swords Dance!"

Samurai shot his trainer a dirty look, as he was still loyal to Chinami and didn't even find Swanna attractive. But he knew the effect that Swords Dance would have, so he reluctantly obeyed by drawing out Normal-type energy from himself and forming it into swords, dancing along with the swords in a ritualistic pattern designed to refine his physical strength. He ignored the chilly wind as he did this - it only hurt a little bit, after all.

"Nice moves! Be careful of the ice though, cause here comes another Icy Wind." Skyla said to Terashi as she watched her Swanna executed another Icy Wind, the bird flapping its wings with vigor and creating a chilly gust of wind, not just trying to sap some of Samurai's health, albeit little, and speed but also creating more ice on the ground beneath the Samurott's feet. The same icy ground it was now dancing on top of. Would be a shame if it slipped thanks to the ice and wind.

Samurai shivered as another bout of Icy Wind covered the battlefield. Between that and how happy Skyla seemed o be about being stuck using another move, it dawned on me that Samurai might trip if he tried to dance again. I'd already turned a slight nerf to his physical strength into a slight buff. Any more than that would just be greed on my part, and with all the ice on the floor, that greed would likely cost me. "Alright, let's mix things up," I mused, thinking hard about what move Samurai could use that would take advantage of his physical strength while requiring him to move as little as possible. It didn't take me long to come up with something, though. "Use the sky as your weapon, Samurai! HIt that Swanna with Air Slash!"

Samurai grabbed his two scalchops and raised them both high above his head. He held that position for a moment or two, then swung them down as fast as he could, causing him to cut the very air itself - A Flying-type slash that rocketed toward Swanna as it spewed its ice and wind. Putting that much effort into his attack caused him to fall back on his butt, though, and with the ice so slippery, it'd take him a minute to get back up - making him a sitting duck for Swanna's next attack.
