Carter was starting to really like Iana. She was sweet and fun to talk to. Plus, she was talking to Carter and listening, which was nice. Carter was typically awkward during the first interaction with someone, but Iana was easy for the girl to talk to.
"Five?" Carter's jaw went slack while listening to Iana talk about her family. She couldn't imagine having one sibling, let alone five. The house must have been so loud and wild, and Carter was sure not to thrive in such an environment. Granted, she had always wanted one sibling, but she knew that had never been in the cards. While her Papa never bad-mouthed her parents, her Nana had let her disdain for Scarlett be known. "You must have had so much fun growing up."
Carter nodded along while Iana described her family's connection to photography. It was cool listening to how Iana's Uncle was blind but still worked for the Daily Prophet. Nana had just sent Carter a letter about her father's current assignment and wondered if he had ever worked with this man. She should write to him and ask but wasn't sure if he would reply. Liam had always been more attentive to his wife than his daughter, and Carter wasn't sure if he would appreciate a letter from her.
"That's really cool. My father writes as a freelancer and is currently working on a shop review article for the Prophet, so I wonder if they have ever met! So, is your brother, Eddie, in this club too? I think it's really cool that your family has hobbies that line up. Papa and I go antique hunting together, but that's the closest I have to a hobby with family.
Carter smiled at the girl, looking around the room at the other students. "If I get an assignment, you have to promise to help me! I am so nervous about writing and could use help. Plus, when you put photography like that, maybe you could teach me a few things. Nothing too hard, but I think it could be fun to learn."
Carter was really starting to like Iana and hoping she had made her first real friend at Hogwarts!

After mentioning the number of siblings in the Overton house, Carter seemed genuinely surprised. Iana went through the family, then shrugged when the Gryffindor said she must've had so much fun growing up. "It was okay, I guess. I don't really know anything different." It wasn't like she had much choice either, because if she did, she'd have found a way to skip Linnie and Ceth's baby stage. They were always so gross! For her, even when she was little, she'd freak out over messes, much to her parents' chagrin.
As Iana spoke about how half their family had something to do with journalism. She was a bit surprised when Carter said her dad did work for the Daily Prophet as well. Iana nodded happily, wondering if Conner had met him before. At her next question, Iana gestured vaguely toward the sibling in mention, who looked over, a bit confused. "Ah... hello?" He gave an awkward wave as Carter continued on about familial hobbies. "Most of ours overlap somehow. Like Eddie here has a fascination with birds. He's usually out taking pictures of them." Iana explained, nodding along to it. Of all her siblings, she figured Eddie was the weirdest one, since he was weird about cameras too.
Iana offered a smile when Carter asked if she could help work on assignments for the paper. "Sure thing! We'd make for a good duo. And... hang on." She turned to her brother as she worked on her sad eyes. "Oh dearest Eddie, my favorite big brother. Would it be possible to borrow your Canon EOS R750? Pleeeeeaaaaase?" She bat her lashes as Eddie rolled his eyes to the ceiling. "I just got that one, so no. But you can borrow my Nikon, so long as you promise it gets back to me as well maintained as it is now." He pulled off his backpack, opening it to reveal multiple cameras and their various lenses. He lifted one out and attached a lens before giving it to his sister.
Iana spun back to Carter with a grin. "Ta-da! I knew he wouldn't give us his new one, so by asking, I guaranteed a camera for us to tinker with." She was glad she continued to play on Eddie's kindness. Thankfully, she was faced away when he sent over an annoyed look. "No, do not worry. I totally cannot hear you." Iana giggled at his words, hoping that Carter didn't think their family too weird.
Carter understood about not knowing any different. She felt the same way about being an only child. She couldn't even begin to fathom a life with siblings, but she guessed for Iana, it was the exact opposite. While Carter was so used to being alone, Iana was probably just as used to being surrounded by people.
When Carter realized that Eddie was standing right there and answered her, mentioning his name, she went crimson. Carter was never truly that great at social cues, but she should have noticed they were right next to each other and could have been siblings. When he waved at her, she waved back. However, Carter's interest was piqued by the mention of birds.
Cartered loved fun facts just as much as she hated riddles. It was one of the few things that kept her going in life. She wouldn't ask more while Iana talked to her; the prospect of making a friend was too important; she would ask about the birds later.
Carter laughed as she watched Iana make sad eyes at her brother. This was, yet again, something she didn't fully understand about siblings. Carter was almost fascinated as the girl took the Nikon from her brother, following up by saying she knew he would let her borrow it. Carter giggled with Iana as Eddie mentioned that he could hear Iana.
"I love your sibling dynamic." She giggled again. "You make me wish I had an older sibling. I could work like that." Carter nodded to the camera with narrowed eyes. "So, first question. I know he just attached a lens, but what did that change? Does it work like eyeglasses or a telescope?"
Carter looked down at her feet, hoping she didn't sound too stupid when asking such a fundamental question. "Sorry, I really don't know anything." Carter knew there was nothing to be embarrassed about. Asking questions was better than not. Still, she didn't like not seeming knowledgeable in front of her new friend.

Carter sat in the Dragon's club room while staring at the notebook in which she wrote her article. Her Muggle pens were next to her as she stared at the page, thinking about how it truly wasn't good enough and that she was starting to chicken out about handing it in to one of the editors for their advice on improving the article.
Carter sat back slowly, looking around the room to the different people working on their articles, thinking about how much better they must be.
Quote:
The season opener for the Quidditch season started with an explosive match between Gryffindor and Slytherin. Gryffindor was led by Captain, and lover of pink, Roxanne Archer, while Slytherin was led by Seeker and Captain Csuri Narain.
The game had an explosive start, with Professor Xian Liu acting as ref, and Gryffindor starting the game with the Quaffle. Even in a duel with Slytherin Vice-Captain Hesperia Argyris, Archer was able to try for the goal, only for Keeper Vikram Bhattacharyya to stop the ball and give the Quaffle to Arggris.
On the other side of the field, Seeker Sebastian Moon for Gryffindor had his eyes on the snitch and started his battle for the gold.
The beaters on both teams did their best to direct their efforts toward the two chasers still fighting for the goal. In today's game, Slytherin at Kasamir Patrovna and Roman Dryaer, while Padraig Knapp and Adelai Bates represented Gryffindor. However, their efforts were futile when Argyris was able to win a goal off of Gryffindor keeper Finneas Grey.
However, Argyris and Archer still continued their fight over the Quaffle, but Archer made another break for the goal. Again, Bhattachargyya was able to save his team. However, Archer was able to steal the Quaffle back from Argyris almost as soon as it was tossed to the Slytherin Chaser, but Argyris gained control again. This back and forth continued across the pitch while the beaters continued attacking both sides.
Both teams were having trouble keeping the Bludgers in order. This was seen when Gryffindor's Knapp hit himself with his own strike, almost sending him off the broom. However, that didn't stop Archer from trying for another goal for Gryffindor. Too bad for them, Slytherin's Bhattacharyya was on his game today and blocked yet another attempt at the goal.
With the two chasers battling it out again, Seekers Moon and Narain were battling it out for the winning score. However, in a surprise swipe from Gryffindor's reserve chaser, it was Dymitri Quinlan who made it out with the Quaffle. However, the veteran Slytherin Chaser was able to quickly regain control. This back and forth kept going between the two teams until the Golden Snitch was caught!
Seeker Sebastian Moon won the game for Gryffindor!!! It was a close call, but Gryffindor won the first game of the season, and this author cannot wait to see where this season goes.

Róisín skipped into the classroom that had been converted into the office of the Daily Dragon, the school's newspaper. After working on one of her routines for her gymnastics, she'd come down to the office to try and work on her article. She was still dressed in her leotard as well as a skirt over it and her flats on. The brunette scratched her head as she looked around, huffing a little sigh. /she still had to write an article on something, but she had absolutely no idea what to even write about. Skipping over to one of the tables, she peeked over to see what they were writing about. "Ooh, are you writing about Quidditch? I was sat on the bench for that game," Rose said, sitting beside her roommate. Her eyes breezed over the article that Carter had written, her brows furrowing a little when she spotted an error. "Oh, Paddy's last name is Kincaide-Knapp. He wasn't born a Knapp but was adopted last summer." Paddy was a good friend of hers and he talked a lot about being adopted and everything. He had said he was surprised when he came home from Hogwarts last year to find out he was being adopted. Róisín sat in the chair beside her, slipped her flats off, then puled her legs up onto the seat as well. She untied her hair from her braids and worked on rebraiding it when she continued reading. "There's also a couple grammar errors," she also pointed out, smiling over at her friend.

Carter glanced over at one of the other Gryffindor first years with a smile. She was happy to see Róisín outside of the common room and classes and had liked the girl. However, looking at her gymnastics attire, Carter wondered how busy she was. While Carter was a member of the literary club, the art club, and the Daily Dragons, she still had a lot of free time. Carter always saw Róisín and wondered how much free time she had, especially with Quidditch on top of everything.
"I keep forgetting you are on the Quidditch team, can you look it over for me? I don't expect it to be published, but I did want to see if one of the editors would look it over." Carter gave Róisín a grateful smile as she slid the article between them. Carter started to make notes about what Róisín was saying, so she could fix the errors before handing over to the editors. "You are a lifesaver, Roe. I'm so nervous about handing this over to the editors. I mean... I don't want them to think I'm dumb."
Carter wrote quietly as she continued to fix the mistakes. Slowly, she looked up as Róisín was fixing her braid. "Hey, Roe, how do you keep up? I mean, you play sports and are a part of clubs. I don't know, I just feel like I'm falling behind." She looked at the girl with a slight frown. Her article had been okay at best, and she had worked hard. Carter knew that she still had a long way to go before reaching her father's level, but she still felt like she wasn't doing enough.

When she was asked if she could look over the article, Róisín nodded and read through the whole thing again, just to make sure she hadn't missed anything. "I doubt anyone would think you were dumb. We're firsties so I doubt that they expect a masterpiece from us," she said with a giggle. Cinnamon eyes scanned through the article, then nodded when she was convinced she'd found all the grammatical issues. Then she passed it back. When she was questioned on how she kept up, the brunette tipped her head to the side a little. "Well, my parents are both Muggles and they both worked a lot during the day. My da's a dentist and mum teaches pre-school. So me and my siblings were in a lot of different afternoon activities. I was really good at gymnastic," she said, gesturing at the leotard she was currently wearing. "My brother paints and my sister plays violin. I wasn't very good at either, so they found me something I was good at. And then, well, when I came here, I tried Quidditch even though I was afraid of heights." She shrugged and rested her head on her knees. Rose had always been confident in herself and never really noticed how busy she got.
This year was an onslaught of chaos, but Bee liked to think he was navigating it well enough. He was managing clubs, head student duties, prefect tasks, quidditch, and classes, plus he and Charlotte were working well together on the design of her dress. For now, though, he had to stop by the newsroom and try his best to catch up on editing. Sure, Eddie and Adelai had both volunteered their services, but they were both busy too, so Bee tried not to lean too much on them.
As he walked in the room, he hadn't been expecting to see two of his younger newsies working on a project together. "Bonjour mesdames. What's got you in the news office today? Anything I can help with?" He set his messenger bag on the head desk, then looked through the tray of deadline work. On top were Eddie's most recent batch of photos, perfectly organized, and an article written by Adelai for current events.
Stepping over to the first years, he noticed a handful of words on the page. "Oh hey, did you write an article, Carter? Let me know if you need any help, or if you're ready for final edits. If we can get it done today, we'll have time to make deadline." He offered a smile, running a hand through his windswept blonde hair. He was always really proud when the younger students branched into new areas, and it was really cool to see. Hopefully she'd be comfortable enough to show him, but he figured if she wasn't, he could try to offer guidance on a later project.

Carter nodded along when Róisín spoke of her life outside of Hogwarts. While Carter was a half-blood, she knew quite a bit about what it was like to live in the Muggle world, after all, her grandmother was so afraid of Muggles that they lived with very little magic. Carter also had lived with anxiety her entire life due to her grandmother's fear, so when Ro spoke of the words of affirmation, she let out a deep sigh.
"Thank you so much, Ro. My dad is a journalist for the Prophet, so I feel much more pressure. I only see him on holidays, but I want him to be proud of me." It was weird to think about the man who was her father, but never truly in her life as one. Still, she wanted so much for him to be proud of her. At least Liam loved her, but Scarlette avoided her. However, due to her relationship with her family, it was nice listening about one that was loving and wanted their children to succeed.
Carter looked up at Ro when she said she played Quidditch even if she feared heights. Carter thought back to her time with the sorting hat on her head and begging not to answer riddles because she was scared. Never in a million years could Carter do what Ro had. "If you were so afraid, what made you want to play Quidditch?" Carter's words were small, thinking about all of her fear and anxiety. She wasn't as deserving of the red robes as most in her house.
However, before Carter could finish thinking about her fear and the worthiness of her house, when their fearless leader walked up to say hello, Carter smiled at the seventh year, thinking about how busy he was as well and how he still managed to do so well as the lead editor. When he asked about the article with the edits between Ro and her, she smiled up at him.
"Hey, Bieito. Yeah, I wrote an article about the first Quidditch match of the season. Ro was helping me with basic edits, but I wanted to see what maybe you or Eddie thought." Carter blushed scarlet as she looked down and slid it over to the seventh year. Luckily, the article was starting to come together with Ro's help. Plus, with Ro's help, they might also be able to do the second Quidditch match.

Róisín shrugged a little when she was asked why she signed up to play Quidditch if she was afraid of heights. "I like trying to conquer my fears as best I can. I used to be afraid of the dark and sleep with a night light, but I got tired of that and started sleeping without one. That's probably why I got sorted into Gryffindor," she said with a giggle. Cinnamon brown eyes looked up when Bieito walked over to their table asking about the article that Carter had written. Rose beamed over at him when he said they could push it into the paper if she was ready for final edits. She believed it was, but ultimately it was up to Carter. Looking over at her, Róisín smiled again when she said she had wanted Bee of Eddie to look it over, then handed it to him. "I thought it was really well written myself and just needed a couple touch ups." She shifted her legs down to the floor, then adjusted the skirt she was wearing, glancing between Bieito and Carter.

Bee grinned as the girls explained that she'd written about the first game of the year, then that Carter wanted to see what he thought. Roisin said she thought it was ready, so the seventh year nodded. "Hey, that's awesome, Carter! I'm sure it'll be grand." He took the article, nodding as his soft blue eyes read it over. There were a few spelling errors here an there, but that was to be expected in literally anyone's work - his included. The bigger issue was the names were either misspelled or not fully there. He opened one of the desk drawers and fished out a sheet of paper, then walked back over to the girls. He set her article down, then added the sheet beside it. "Okay. Firstly, it's really well written. It'll need a few edits, but every single writer does, okay? This is a list of every single player, their position, and their year. A few of the names are either not complete or have a few misspellings." He figured allowing self-edits would be a good way to help teach here. "And please know, this isn't to be mean or anything. Even some of our older writers have to consult the list." That's why there were those resources, after all. He had a stack of old player logs, including some in his brother's hand.

Carter was still star-struck by the courage Ro showed every day of her life. Carter had been questioning the sorting hat's decision to place her in Gryffindor for a while, and listening to Ro talk about how she doesn't let her fear stop her confirmed it for her. Carter had asked the hat not to place her in Ravenclaw out of fear of being locked out, and Ro was living through her fear.
That was why the compliment from the girl meant so much to Carter. Ro was kind effortlessly, while Carter fumbled through life. However, when the seventh year opened his desk drawer, he handed her a page. Looking down, her ears turned red at the number of names she had misspelled, and Carter nodded once. "Thanks, Bieito. I'll use this to help correct the mistakes and use it for the next game too. I hope one day I can be the senior Quidditch correspondent for the team. Maybe I will end up as an announcer, too. If that goes well, we could start a player spotlight piece and I could interview everyone."
Carter had no idea why she said that, or what had possessed her to do so. However, Ro's nightlight story and her fear of heights inspired her to do something daring, even small. She quickly pulled out another parchment page and placed it in the typewriter. In no time, she had made some rudimentary corrections, namely to the students' names.

Eddie was still a little surprised that Bieito had passed the leadership of the Daily Dragon to him. It was a great honor, but also a huge responsibility. He dressed in clothes he figured were nice enough, then moved to gather his gear. As he was packing his camera bag, he realized that his favorite telephoto lens was missing. Well, that was not good! He got all his best bird pictures with that lens! He could not have forgotten it at home... could he have? With a sigh, he hurried off to the News Room. He would have to look again later. Surely he had just misplaced it.
Once in the room, he set out a tray of cookies he had baked that morning. Apparently having snacks was something requested often enough to warrant him spending time in the kitchen. After he got everything set out, Eddie went to see if he could un-jam the one typewriter that always gave them issues. Currently it had a floating Y key and a double-type on the B. This machine had been causing an annoyance for several years. Maybe he could fix it. Or he could find someone that knew how to fix it. Either or. With a sigh, he moved to the whiteboard, writing out all the potential positions. His own name was added as Lead Editor and as Lead Photographer. Plus someone had to keep Eddie on his toes, right? She'd spent the day before outside with Eddie's telephoto lens, taking pictures in the garden. Her big problem now was that she'd put it down somewhere... and now she had no idea where it was. Hopefully he'd found it, though. Otherwise he (and dad, for sure) would be pretty mad. But before the club was to meet up, she switched to her backup camera. Maybe she could just tell Eddie she hadn't brought her Canon. If he believed that, she would have no reason to ever have touched his lens!
Walking into the club, she grinned at her brother. "Hey nerd! Ready for another year doing the news? Hey, did you make cookies?" She noticed the tray, but since they were exposed, there was no way to guarantee they hadn't been touched by anyone. "Hello, Iana. Please do not call me that. And yes, I did make cookies. I also set aside three in a sealed container, specific for you. Washed my hands twice before touching them." He sighed softly, then offered over the sealed bowl. Iana grinned, setting it down until she'd used the hand sanitizer from her pocket. She happily ate one of the cookies, glad her brother was a pretty good baker. "While you are here, do you know anything about my missing telephoto lens? It is the one I use most often and I am confident I packed it." Aw darn, he definitely already knew. "Me? No. I brought my other camera this year." When he sighed, she hurried to turn her focus to the applications, hoping he wouldn't call her on the lie.

Vesper practically sprinted down the corridor towards the Daily Dragon club room. A group of students as passionate about spreading the truth as much as she was. Her people were waiting for her! Skidding to a stop in front of the door, she quickly smoothed out her clothes and calmly entered the room. She couldn’t risk letting her bravado slip, she needed to look calm, cool and collected.
Entering the room, Ves flashed a smile to the few students in attendance. Maybe not as many of her people as she had hoped, but still a solid number of them. She picked up a registration form and filled it out, subtly eavesdropping on the conversations around her, including the club captain and his sister. Sounds like… a case!
Ves finished her form and held it to her chest as she approached the pair. ”Excuse me, she interrupted. Handing her registration form to the captain, she continued. ”Vesper Morwyn, P.I. I think I can help you with your problem.” She slipped two business cards out of her back pocket and handed one to each of them, then took a fresh notebook and pencil from her other pocket. She flipped open the cover and scribbled The Case of the Missing Camera Lens at the top of the first page. Ves looked up eagerly to the pair and asked, ”Tell me, when did you last see this camera lens?”
