Sometimes clients came out with especially strange things. They were from other cultures entirely and it took a while to learn humanity. His face softened and he sighed. It wasn't good to lash out at them either, but that had come sort of suddenly and revealed a bit of a tender spot.

"No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have snapped at you. I do, I guess. It's hard sometimes to go from a person every four feet to a person every..." He peered around them and saw Dari coming back with a bit of wood. Too much weight and his arms would just collapse, but he had learned his limits.

"Just a lemon, some salt, some spice mix. It smelled good." He looked back toward the bag he'd packed to the beach. Nothing special, but he didn't want to eat plain fish. "Yeah, I do. More so for other people than just for myself, but I do like it."

Dari came back and dropped the wood beside the fire and began to stoke it. Survival training for agents was not required, but it was heavily suggested. He had mostly learned through Toby.

"Could you teach me to cook?" Maia asked. She'd taken his hand again. "Obviously not tonight, but sometime? I tried once and it turned out awful. I couldn't really read the instructions. Things taste so much better when they're cooked." She gave his hand a squeeze. "Hey. I'm coming with you tomorrow. Show me around?"

"Well, some time maybe." Of course once Maia was relocated he probably wasn't going to see her much anymore but for now he just wanted to be the most comforting presence he could. He wouldn't mind having someone to teach to cook anyway, it was nice to have company in the kitchen, and if Maia decided she wanted to live as a human she'd better know how to make some things. The kitchen at HQ was stocked.

"I agree. I'm not a big raw fan aside from sushi." But then the subject changed. Show her around? Where? "What do you mean? At headquarters?"

"When you're not busy, of course," Maia quickly amended. She didn't want him to feel as if he was obligated. "It makes me feel sick, in this form. The other is fine with it. I could eat if I needed to. But I don't like to."

She nodded. "At headquarters. I'd like to see some of the stuff you do. You don't have to show me everything. I imagine some things are top secret. And you could show me around where you live, if you like. I've never been any place but here. It might be nice." She was awfully afraid, to leave the only place she'd known, but she'd be with new friends! Toby was kind, and Dari certainly knew how to have fun. Even if she guessed he'd come in the water to watch her as much as keep her company. "Did the other Selkies try to escape on you?"

"Huh, that's actually kind of interesting." Having a 'human' form could mean one of two types, either you were a slightly altered version of your past human state or you were, for all intents and purposes, entirely human. Maia seemed to be of the latter category. Her human belly couldn't handle fish in their freshest state but her selkie form must.

"Oh! Of course, I wouldn't just send you in there and go back to work," he replied, "I'll show you whatever I can and, yes, definitely. Not everyone gets their pelt back so soon." They had tried, but that didn't mean they'd succeeded.

Maia was fairly excited to get to see HQ: she would, maybe, be able to meet other entities. "Well. Not every selkie is as honest as me," Maia observed. "I know my limits." She'd realized if she'd kept her pelt any longer, she might be tempted to try and escape, breaking the promise she'd made to Toby. She had also known that she would be caught, and that Toby would have been angry.

"Lets go see If I have any cooking stuff." She led Toby into her house, going to the kitchen. "I've never used any of it," she said. "Well once. That ended badly."

Toby nodded. "Not every person at all is as honest as you."

He followed Maia into the house and admired how sturdy it seemed despite its owner's preference to living in the sea. The selkie's comment about cooking made him expect to see scorch marks on the walls and ceiling and he grinned at the thought. In the kitchen, he began to open cabinets looking for pans and spatulas and knives and the like.

"No," she agreed, "I imagine not."

"I don't know how old any of it is, really. I purchased a few things when I tried to make lobster, but one of the pans got so black I don't think it's usable." She opened up the cabinets over the stove, peering inside. "Do you have a favorite thing to make?" she asked. She pulled out a pan. "Would this work? Oooh. I could show you the rest of the house! The furniture has all been here since my parents bought it. My bed creaks and bounces. Its kind of neat."

"Ah, yeah, I'd guess it isn't," Toby nodded, then considered her question. His favorite thing to make? "I don't think so. I enjoy all of it, I guess. I get a sort of special nostalgia using my mom's old recipes, though."

He took the pan from Maia and inspected it. "Yeah. Yeah, this should work fine. Now if you just have a little cooking oil? Oh I--" He smiled to Maia. "Let's look around after dinner. Dari will want to see too."

Creaky, bouncing beds, huh? Hah.

"It's like she's there making it with you," she guessed. "Mine didn't cook, not really. Not on the stove. But she'd make these cake things. And they were good. Sweet. They tasted like honey and other things. They were small. I never learned to make them."

She nodded. She didn't want Dari feeling left out, any more than She had wanted Toby to when they were swimming. "Sounds good. I have cooking oil," She said, taking it out of the cabinet. "Its just vegetable oil. Does that work with fish?"

"Sounds good," Toby said, but really any cake that tasted like honey was good by him. He wasn't sure just what she was referring to, though. "Mine cooked all the time, she loved it. My dad tried too, but he wasn't very good." A little smile flickered over his face at the memory of a panicked morning when his father had tried to make pancakes and flooded the house with smoke.

"Yeah, sure, that'll work," he said, setting everything on the counter. "I'll go get the fish and start cooking. If you want to go and bring Dari inside you can, or you could stay out there with him, I don't mind."

Maia seemed hesitant to leave the kitchen for a moment, and then nodded. She made her way outside, meaning to fetch Dari. "Dari! Come on! Toby's cooking, and then he says I can show you around my house. I have things to show you!" Shells She had collected over the years, her creaky bed, small things.

"I'll teach you how to catch fish at the lake you told me about."

Dari, sitting at the fire, perked and came inside. It was nice to be out in the open and not be covered. It was a rare treat. He smiled to Maia with his glowing eyes. "We'll have to go at dark. I don't think people would take too kindly to a transparent shadow-man."

He'd brought in the cooler and fish as well. "Here."

Toby smiled and accepted the cooler, setting up to cook. "Thanks."

He would gladly put it off to get the grand tour.

"We can do that." People didn't seem to take kindly to any sort of supernatural creature. "People can be so judgemental," she tutted. "Lets stay on the beach after dinner," she suggested. Maybe they'd see a shooting star, and if they didn't, the moon reflecting on the water was always beautiful.

"Can we Toby? At least until the fire dies."

"Yeah, of course." Toby's brow was furrowed. He tested the stove to see if it even still had power. It did. The werewolf then went about starting dinner, setting up his bare mise en place on the misused counter. "If anyone tries to come back on I'll call the cops. I am going to have to get the car at some point, though. I feel like walking back to the hotel with luggage would draw a few raised brows.

"They can," Dari nodded. Oh, she had not seen the worst of it.
