"Hee."
This was the first game?
Fallow's bright, neon eyes stared down at the simple table in front of himself, and his tail pulsed an unnervingly bright color, swishing back and forth in obvious glee. Finally, this was getting fun. The attendant opposite of him looked less thrilled than him, staring without mirth down at the cups between his fingers and thick silk robes. In a heavy accent, he explained in short syllables the object of the game. He would move the cups. One had a marble under it.
The marble was the prize.
Once the game started, Fallow bent unnervingly close to the table, watching as the attendant moved the cups. He was fast, so very, very fast, but Fallow was faster, and the Púca couldn't help but let out a loud and keening sort of sound once the cups came to a halt and he was given four choices with one that was right. His own fingers reached out then, deftly tracing across the curve and structure of each cup.
For a second he considered knocking them all off and moving on.
But then something skittered, moved around beneath one of them. The attendants stony face became even stonier, if that was possible. Well, the marble certainly wasn't under that one then, he thought, feeling his tail flick in haughty amusement. His attention drew away from the cup though, back to the other ones. Now, now, now, which one would he choose?
Ah, but it was so hard, wasn't it?
The Púca giggled.
Not really.
He let out a whistle then, a hum, and yanked away the far left cup, revealing a shiny pearlescent marble beneath. The attendant merely nodded to him, a curt and jerking sort of "move on, move on" gesture that made Fallow scowl at him. He'd yet to forgive the clan as a whole for his unpleasant stay in their hidden lair, and though he was easily sated by the fun of Invictus's final game, he'd not forgotten the swell of anger that had bated him endlessly the night before. Anger, and perhaps a little bit of hurt pride. Swiping the marble off the table, Fallow curled it between his fingers and swished his tail when the attendant began to speak.
"No." He said firmly. "This is mine now."
And then he stalked past him to the next island ahead.

The demon studied the final lock. It was crystal clear, and the more he stared to the remaining keys, the more he realized the obvious choice.
Picking up the delicate pearl key, he placed it in the transparent lock, turning it.
The lock snapped open with a sharp click, and fell off it's hinge. It was surprisingly simple given his last attempt. Throwing back the hinges, Faussi pulled the chain and bamboo aside, hurrying his eager way across the final bridge to his destination. He wondered if Amarus and Olivia had made it through yet.

Step 3 (rolling again with no damage)
and they found themselves in the center of a stage surrounded by a circle of torch-bearers to lit it up. Above, all the tiers of seats were dark, and there, in the darkness, shades were moving though not to be seen. The subdued mutter of conversation in a strange language rising from behind the rows of benches, swift whispers of explanation, now and then a wave of shouts or a haunting laughter. Somewhere from above a voice read out aloud:
'Lo! 'tis a gala night Within the lonesome latter years! An angel throng, bewinged, bedight In veils, and drowned in tears, Sit in a theatre, to see A play of hopes and fears, While the orchestra breathes fitfully The music of the spheres'
Wylfene shuddered. THis was just their kind of luck - to end up performing in some cheap play. Was it the game they expected her to play? The voice continued:
'That motley drama- oh, be sure It shall not be forgot! With its Phantom chased for evermore, By a crowd that seize it not, Through a circle that ever returneth in To the self-same spot, And much of Madness, and more of Sin, And Horror the soul of the plot'
Well, that was much closer to the world of Halloween, with its madness, and sin, and horror... suddenly the voice added annoyed: 'But who are you? You are not supposed to be here!' The orchestra played a false tune, and the choir started singing: 'Exeunt Wylfenne!' - much to the fae's content. That was exactly the lucky chance they hoped for - and they left....
[[ well that is not exactly a game .. but still, the charm works - and it is a play anyway! ]]

[Step 3 (-5. but using save to re-roll)]
.. only to find themselves in a far scarier place. Wylfenne was starting to grow tired of testing their luck. An island hidden in thick wet darkness, what could be worse! It felt as if thousands of koi fish were tickling them - or even worse than tickling, as the fae was alost choking. Besides, this place reminded them of their adventure in the forbidden room under the temple of nine dragons. Now one of the fish whispered almost inaudibly in their ear: 'Catch me if you can - and I'll let you out of here!'
There was one disadvantage which Wylfenne had no time to voice out: they actually could not swim! If that type of movement was swimming indeed! The fae stretched their limbs in an inhumane effort to touch the fish - and they almost touched its tail - but suddenly it was the fish's tail that touched Wylfenne's cheek, and they felt they were drowning - or falling down, down, down -
but grasping the fish's tail they jumped out of the water to the new location.

"Garagara."
"I - what?"
The attendant at the next island nearly scowled at him in impatience. "Garagara lottery." He said again, as if that explained everything. He pushed up a sleeve and gestured to the strange thing set up in the center of the small floating land; a translucent white box machine attached to a lever and filled to the brim with balls. They were bright, colored from dull blues to opalescent greens and reds. Fallow stared at it, fingers twitching in possessive want. What a curious contraption.
"So I just - "
"Turn the lever."
"Yes, yes," Fallow returned impatiently, casting a dark look at the attendant. "Do not rush me, I am going, and turn your unhappy stare somewhere else." Stepping forward, Fallow yanked back his own sleeve and latched his fingers onto the lever, beginning to turn it. It was nearly dazzling, the way the box turned and swished all of the balls around inside. They made a clanking noise, all rattling together along with the hiss of a few creatures as well. He was even pretty sure he saw one get squished up against the side at one point.
"Oh, I do hope I do not get that one." He said rather bemusedly to himself, and when the slot below still remained empty, the Púca growled and began to turn harder and harder. The balls went faster and faster too, and suddenly --
Clank!
"Ah!" Fallow lept back and the lever continued to go from the momentum he'd built up, spinning the mechanism more and more, until a second ball popped out fast enough to knock into the first and ricochet it towards his head. The Púca yelled and threw himself to the ground, just barely missing the heavy ball that went careening past the space where his head had been and into the water somewhere behind him.
The attendant coughed behind a sleeve.
Slowly, Fallow picked himself up again and trotted over to the machine, where his second ball lay. Picking it up, he smoothed it over with his fingers, admiring the pearlescent white and the slick cool surface that it displayed. Looking over at the only other person on the island, Fallow rattled the ball slightly in his hands. "What does this mean then?"
The attendant coiled his hands together beneath thick sleeves and stared at the white ball for a long moment before turning his eyes to Fallow himself. "White is the color of mourning and death." He paused, and Fallow frowned at him, making the same "move on, move on" gesture with his head that the attendant from before had made. The attendant sighed and said simply, "You are unlucky."
... Oh.

Nearly fumbling his way to the next island, Fallow was surprised to find this piece of land adorned with much simpler accessories than the garagara lottery ones had been. Stepping off of the bridge, the Púca swiped his tail across the ground and trotted closer to the simple wooden table, upon which many cards were neatly laid out, all of them facing downwards and hiding their true meanings from him.Fallow traced his fingers over the cards, curious about what hidden traps were no doubt rumbling about and laying in wait for him underneath.
No attendant stood on this island, only a simple sign that said "Choose wisely. Matching cards will earn you great wisdom and patience. Mismatching, and you will need to re-hone your patience... and your luck."
Alright then.
Fallow's ears curled back in wonder. Who needed patience to win at a game full of luck? Deftly, his fingers flipped over the first card, and he was both amused and disappointed to see that inked into these were various creatures instead of suits. A dragon stared back at him, and the card even seemed to exhale a plume of smoke as though alive. On closer inspection though, Fallow realized something odd. The dragon was an opalescent white, and against his will, the former attendants words echoed through his mind. You are unlucky.
Growling, the Púca shook his head with an impatient toss of hair over his shoulder. "Unlucky my a**," He rumbled and flipped over the next card, letting out a triumphant aha! "See? I am not unlucky at all."
The two white dragons stared back at him from their places on the ornately detailed cards, breathing smoke but nothing more. Grinning to himself, Fallow bounced away contently, ready to take on the next island. Of course, halfway there, he managed to trip and throw himself off the side of one of the bridges and into the lotuses below. Unlucky indeed.

[Step 3 re-roll (escapes unscathed)]
They found themselves in a room that appeared all a delicious ornament, every inch of its intricate carvings, every shade of colour owing its place to the fantasy of the unknown artificer. Even considering the usual Conquest lavishness, this one could be seen as a curious work in jewelry. Its radiant marble tiles decorated with semi-precious stones, its ceiling gilded into a burning red, the quiet muted silk of curtains, darkened silver of mirrors, - everything seemed to be arranged with a caring and tasteful hand. In the center of the room there was a table where there was a deck of Tarot cards. A note written in ancient Gothic script read: 'Play with your fate: guess it!'
'Game is a mere physiological phenomenon or a psychological reflex', Wylfenne mused. They had no other choice but to accept the challenge and play with fate: there were no other exit, to be exact. So they took one of the cards, right from the top of the deck, and read out loud:
'Inconsistency that leads to safe exit. Necessity to make a choice. Journey. New experience'.
As soon as they finished reading, they heard a deadly laughter. The note also changed, and now read in 'MS Sans Serif': 'You pass, Fool...'
and they were transferred to yet another location.

Unfortunately, the next island Fallow managed to drag his way onto seemed to be either unused or boasting some sort of game that was invisible. With a slight sort of grunt, Fallow shook out his soaking locks, and then his entire body with an audible grown, his tail dripping a trail behind him and pulsing a sickeningly bright neon glow. "Fine," He said scathingly to the empty space, "be that way, be alone forever, silly island."
Turning tail, the Púca began to move to the next island.
And hopefully not fall off of any bridges this time around.

[step 4 (-10 but choosing to sacrifice luck)]
... only to find themselves in the center of the battlefield. The ghosts issued out from all the dismembered bodies mocked and jeered over a most hideous battle and the worst victory the fae could have imagined: the only victor was a weird being sitting in the center of a pile of the disfigured dead creatures and beckonning Wylefenne to approach. 'Came her' ta play games, huh? How 'bout play one with meee?'
The rules were nauseating and simple, it was like playing Battleship only the ships were ghostly, and constructed out of dead bodies and appearing right on the battlefield, and it distracted WYlfenne a lot, as they never wanted to cause pain: fear, yes, even death if it was needed and honorable. But making this remnants of once-a-human-life unnecessary suffer even in this nightmare-like afterlife had nothing to do with their battle skills, and they were not wisened enough yet to just accept it as fate.
So they were loosing. The creature laughed ghoulishly, and suggested they could either part with their life or with their luck.
'Luck' said Wylfenne. Not that they were afraid of death or pain, but that was silly; besides, they were a bit afraid that 'death' would imply staying there forever.
'Luck? Good choisseeeeeeeeee', and they felt like a small part of them shining like a firefly was being torn out of them. Not that it was unbearable, but it felt somewhat empty and cold.

The next island had no attendant either, which Fallow found both very relaxing and very odd, for who knew when one would decide to cheat. The Púca flicked his tail in mild bemusement at the sign, though he did not read it before his attention was distracted to the simple black box sitting on the simple black table. "Hmmm." He rumbled softly, trudging up to it and shaking more water from his hair. Some of the droplets splattered over the open hole on the top of the box, and suddenly a hiss rose up from inside - or multiple hisses, if one listened closely.
"Ah."
The sign next to him was an identification board with simple instructions above it. Reach into the box, it said. Pull out a serpent. Test your luck. Below was a list of which ones were poisonous and which ones were not. "Oh." Fallow said very simply, and at that moment he was tempted to jump off a bridge again instead of stick his hand in there. But, ah, where was the fun in that? Sighing, Fallow dropped his jacket to the ground and lifted his wrist, gently beginning to lower it into the black box.
A string of offended hisses followed, and Fallow hissed right back, a loud and gnarled sort of sound. "Do not snap at me like that!" He said to the box, and snatched the first writhing, cool scaled body to touch his fingertips, yanking it upwards and out with a triumphant yell. The snake stared back at him with beady eyes, hissing, but in a fashion that made it seem more like the runt of the... ah... snake den?
Fallow looked over at the board just to make sure.
"Harmless." He rumbled to himself, looking back at the snake now simply coiling around his arm. "Well, you are not very fit for being in that box then, are you?" The snake hissed at him again and slithered a bit up his arm.
Fallow frowned, and he did not speak snake language, but he doubted that was anything close to "put me back."
So he did not.

So today's course was a ... luck course?
From listening to the words that Invictus was saying, that was what Serafina managed to gather, eyes glancing between all three of the small islands that were gathered.
And a gourd charm and her incense to arm her?
Well, this would be interesting.
Serafina's back straightened, her eyes looking forward, waiting for her turn to attach these little obstacles. This wouldn't be so bad! Maybe she could even excel at it, perhaps get something special from Invictus! That would have meant she impressed him, and that was likely the most important part of anything like this--impressing those that were present, perhaps in a much less ... unspectacular fashion than how she ever seemed to handle her dancing with Professor Zhang. Right. If she was going to impress anyone at this Conquest isle, she was definitely going to impress Invictus. Heir to the throne and all. Did Conquest have thrones?
... Never mind that. Grinning, Serafina stepped forward, onto the first isle, looking to the first activity of "luck" she had to go through. Die rolling? Oh, this'd be easy. Happily, she sat down in front of the ... koi. Was that a koi? Serafina knit her brow. A koi?
Perhaps it was meant to throw it off, and so, Serafina swallowed her nervousness, looking up to the fish. "So what do I need to do?"
Her answer was simple: roll two sixes on the die on her first attempt, and she could move on. Serafina shrugged, picking the die up on her hand, shaking it carefully with the other, and dropping the die down on the stone near her feet.
Well, looked like the charms worked after all. Grinning, Serafina got up, bowed to the koi, and moved right on to the next isle. Easy enough. This would be simple, very simple, she thought, moving on to bow in front of the next koi--ignoring how surreal this was, anyway--and wondered what in Halloween--or in the Four Clans' Isles, she supposed--would be her next challenge. As simple as rolling dice, perhaps? Or would it be as complicated as...
"Walk this tight rope, and do not fall. ... Gracefully."
That almost seemed a bit pointed, and the ghoul winced at the reminder of her own lack of grace. Or bipolar grace, anyway. Nothing really could explain how she both managed to embarrass herself with dance and do absolutely fantastically in it, indeed, she figured. Still! She could do this! She had been graceful before and there wasn't a doubt in her mind that she was capable of such beauty again! Ghouls and boils would brag for ages, if they could see her anyway. Could they see her? Perhaps she should try to make herself more obvious.
"Please hurry up, Serafina Arai."
"Yes ma'am!" She left out the "fish," from her phrase, immediately moving to trampeze across the rope. Without a second thought, she moved onto the platform and began to walk, one foot in front of the other. Hey. This wasn't so bad. She could do this! She could do this! Perhaps her steps were becoming much faster than was necessary, but she was nearly flying, and fly she did--or nearly so, anyway--and on to the third isle she was, without nary even a scratch.
Lucky indeed, she was, as Serafina observed her incense and her charm. Perhaps, she pondered, as she hopped off onto the third isle, she knew what she was doing after all! Well, now what was the next koi going to ask her to do? More dice, more gymnastics? She could do gymnastics! She got this! A beginner's luck was totally fitting of her, was it not? Her knuckles were cracked as she looked up to the koi, almost daring her to take her on, to just try her, that she could totally handle whatever in Halloween that was going to come at her, by Jack and by anything else that seemed convenient at the time ... did they say By the Lotus here? It seemed fitting for how much they practically worshipped the objects.
"Serafina, pay attention!"
And that counted the second time she got scolded for letting her mind wander. Serafina coughed, straightening her back, before bowing in front of her. "I apologize, ma'am! What is my challenge?" Was that a tower of ... bricks?
"Fairly simple, actually. Pull out a block from the design we have made, and have it not fall."
Aha! Then she would just pull from the top, right? That seemed the most logical. Serafina placed her hand forward, and pulled the small wooden brick off from the top of the tower ... only to shortly end up with the rest of the tower just beyond her feet. With a wince, the ghoul looked up to the koi.
"Ah, sorry."
And that was how she found herself with the task of waiting for the thing to come together again, and to attempt to, once again, pull a brick from it, with the same unhelpful results. This time, she had figured that maybe something from the side of the structure would be most helpful, without realizing that made the structure a bit faulty, and she certainly didn't have the luck to fix that, ultimately. It was lucky that the tower fell away from her, she figured, but the tower was still on the ground, and she was still stuck there again, much to her disliking, much to her displeasure, as the tower came back together again. Alright. She could do this. There had to be a better way...
Carefully, she looked at the structure, attempting to evaluate it. Well, maybe if she took one from the center, that wouldn't ruin whatever the top was balancing on. Made the most sense to her, anyway. Serafina, carefully, pulled a brick from the middle, and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, concentrating on the Gourd Charm she had been given. That was what she was supposed to do, right? That was supposed to give her the added luck she needed, maybe... was that what was Invictus was implying?
It seemed to be at least well enough for her, as she found that the tower had stayed up this time. Serafina nearly squealed, eager to move on to the next isle and perhaps watch the others get through these challenges... that would be more entertaining than whatever she was doing now in this luck course. Now what did she have to do? This didn't look good; that knife on a rope potentially looked more painful than anhything else. How did she plan on avoiding that? Careful timing? Was that what this was about? She stepped a bit closer, her eyes darting up, nervously.
"Cut the rope, don't get stabbed."
Simple enough, she supposed, but how was that exactly--
"Serafina Arai."
Right! No delaying, that would be embarrassing. No hesitance. Invictus did not need to see her hesitate! Serafina was never hesitant! She was strong, fast, powerful, and she would cut that rope with-- ooh, she couldn't use her Fear, could she? That was what she had been told, Serafina recalled, with a wince. She would have to use the scissors that had been set there. Why would she do that when other things were so much more convenient? Alright, line herself up properly--oh, of course this put her right under the knife!--and cut! Simple-- yikes! The ghoul's eyes widened as her eyes flickered up, and within seconds, she suddenly darted away, but not without getting her dress caught in the knife. With a soft noise of alarm, she began to yank at the knife until it was freed, and scampered off.
That was a close one ... perhaps she should be more careful.
Only one left, though! This looked like it would be fairly easy, with some more dice laid out in front of her. She could handle this. She sat down in front of the table, looking to the dice, wondering what she could possibly have to do here--
"Roll the die. If they match, you walk away. If they don't, you will regret it."
That smile made the ghoul's expression fall.
"Your move."
Indeed, her move. She could do this, right? She definitely could. She tapped her fingers against the table, before scooping up the two dice. She could do this. She could do this just fine without any problems at all as the dice rolled around in her fingers. She would impress Invictus! That was the important part of this! Nothing would go wrong here and of that she was absolutely, utterly, one hundred percent Jackdamn certain... why was she so damn determined to impress the heir again? Oh, right, heir. But would she ever be back here after this? Well, the Isles were beautiful-- oh just roll already!
A three and ... a three!
"HA!"
Okay, perhaps that was a bit louder than necessary, but Serafina leapt up, nearly impolite in the way she pointed to the bearer of the challenge and let her eyes light up like a jack-o'-latern. After a moment, her demeanor calmed, and she coughed. "Ah. Sorry. Thank you very much for letting me participate in this challenge."
She bowed, before scampering off the isles, eager to watch some of the other students go through this mess.
... Oh, let them suffer.
Plenty to gossip about, after all! Plus, then, she'd be much more likely to end up in good graces! What could that extra reward possibly be?

The fifth and final island he visited was scarcely decorated as well, and Fallow was strangely beginning to miss the ornate interiors of the Conquest Isles many buildings. Staring back at him from across the table was another attendant, though this one had the manners not to look like he was about to throw himself off a bridge for all the ineptitude going on around him. On the table were two ornately detailed guns, trimmed in gold and more suitable for a glass case than a table for a test, if Fallow had anything to say about it.
But wait. What were they even for?
Fallow frowned and trudged forward, looking up at the clanmember with a slight tip of his head. "Well?" He inclined curiously. The attendant cleared his throat and explained the game to him. Each gun was loaded with one bullet. They each pulled the trigger to their heads at the same time.
"Do not worry though," The attendant said when Fallow seemed near to protesting, "the bullets are rubber. They may sting, but they will not... cause unnecessary damage."
"Ah," Fallow rumbled in response, picking up a gun and putting the cold metal to the side of his head, "but wheres the fun in that?"
Wisely, the attendant did not respond, and simply cradled his own gun between his fingers, pressing the muzzle to the side of his head. Fallow could only imagine what the poor sod must have done wrong to be tasked with this sort of game.
"On the count of three," The man continued sternly, "one, two ... "
"Hmmmm."
Fallow stopped him with a sound of amusement, and reaching out, he caught the muzzle of the attendants gun and pulled. "No, no, lets do it this way." Leading his opponents gun to his own forehead, Fallow giggled as he placed the cool metal against the attendants as well. "Its much better now." He said quietly, teasingly, mockingly. The attendant's face grew stony, but he did little other than nod curtly and count again.
"One, two, and..."
Ah, lets see where this goes now.
"Three."
The sound of an empty clicking rang through. But when Fallow looked again, the attendant was on the ground, trying his best to be regal on his a**.
"Hm." Sliding around the table, the Púca offered a hand which was - rather gracelessly - accepted. Lifting the attendant to his feet, Fallow smiled toothily and bowed. "That was rather anticlimactic." He told the attendant, "you should work on your theatrics a bit more, yes?"
Thankfully, the other was still trying to regain that Conquest Clan haughtiness that all of them seemed likely to possess on any given day, and Fallow bounded towards the end before he could get a response. To the finish line now! Five steps won, and he was unscathed. The Púca couldn't help but laugh and croon, "who's unlucky now?"
That was when he fell off another bridge.
