Dramatic Marshmallow

Gale had hoped to be able to get free, since the creature holding him had taken significant damage from the rest of the team that were attempting to help. After all, it had dropped him to the ground with a painful thud, though it had not let go yet. Before's' throwing of his shoe (which had made Gale grin, despite the fact that he was being held captive by the tongue of a horrific looking creature and his leg felt as if it would fall off any second), the purple haired girl's fiercely determined attack...

...except a second later something shot out at the girl, latching onto her wrist and dragging her away as fast and hard as it had Gale. He stared stupidly at the space she had been standing a second before, feeling his heart crash noisily in his chest, against his ribcage.

This isn't happening.

There was a horrible shrieking noise and suddenly Gale felt the thing around his leg grow tighter, yanking him backwards and pulling him across the floor. He let out a yell of anger, pain ricocheting through his mind, his fingers grappling desperately at the floor for something, anything he could grab onto.

This isn't how things were supposed to go. Gale squeezed his eyes shut, gritting his teeth in frustration and pain. I am not going to die!

BANG.

The acrid smell of burnt flesh mixed with smoke filled Gale's nose, but to his stunned surprise he felt the pressure around his ankle disappear almost instantly. He pushed himself up, eyes wide as he took in the person in front of him - Bix.

Gale did not waste any more time. "Took you guys long enough!"

The smirk that crossed his face was a grateful one, as was the nod of relief and the thanks he gave the older boy. Gale grabbed ahold of Bix's wrist and hauled himself unsteadily to his feet, his hands slipping to grab the gun lying on the floor beside him. Using Bix to support himself (his half burned off leg would not let him stand on his own), Gale stretched out his arm, pointing the gun towards the creature holding the girl captive. Maybe it would help, maybe it wouldn't, but he couldn't stand by and do nothing when she had tried to help him.

"Let her go!"

He squeezed the trigger. There was an explosion of sound as the bullet left the barrel, hitting its target directly where Gale had wanted to. The ricochet of acid from the recoil of the gun made his fingers burn, droplets spraying across his arm, and Gale staggered, nearly collapsing. He closed his eyes briefly, dragging in a ragged breath for air before he snapped them open again.

"These damn things never learn, do they?"

If anyone thought Before was panicking before this point, the blinded trainee promptly flipped his lid the instant he felt fingers graze his arm as the attacking parasite-creature-thing grabbed hold of Jeremy's shirt. "WHAT WAS THAT!? WHAT WAS THAT?! WHAT THE ******** ******** WAS THAT!?!?!" Before screamed, turning his head this way and that, not letting his inability to see hinder him from losing all sense of reason. He tried to make a run for it but succeeded in half-falling forward and half-dragging Jeremy with him. Somewhere above his own shrieks, he managed to hear Bix yelling out. He wasn't certain what exactly the tall Beta was shouting for them to do, but it helped ground him somewhat.

Unfortunately, not enough for him to calm down and regain his sense. Because Before began to blindly swing with his damaged bat at what he thought was the advancing mob. "s**t! Stay back! I WILL SHOVE THIS UP YOUR ROTTING ASSES IF YOU GIVE ME THE CHANCE!" he threatened, "Unless you're into that, IN WHICH CASE I WILL JUST ******** YOU WITH THIS! And if you're into that too, you know what, JUST STAY BACK!" XCCCCCC Oh God, oh God, they were all going to die, aren't they?

It had only made the monsters angrier. "Damn," Jordan spat, jumping back and throwing a glance over his shoulder - three of the things had jumped, arcing smoothly into the group of trainees, and - damn, one of them had latched onto Ennéa, another going for Petra. The third one missed; the creature latched onto Gale hadn't yet been forced to let him go - no, Bix was on it, snapping off a shot point-blank into the thing and forcing it back. Good.

And shouting instructions. Good ones. Even better. Jordan turned and headed for the thing that had Ennéa, bringing his bat back for a swing as he ran. "Robert, get Z - Petra," he yelled. "Everyone, to the shelter. Don't let anyone fall!" He skidded to a stop beside Bix, Gale and Ennéa, checking his swing just in time as Gale forced the thing off the pink-haired girl with a well-placed shot.

A rapid assessment of the situation was grim. "You're in bad shape," he said, and dug the bandages one-handed out of his pack. Crap, he was going to have to drop the bat, but there wasn't time to think about it. He dropped his weapon, wrapping Gale's leg - smoking from the acid, and don't think about that either - as thoroughly as he could manage in a short amount of time. The result was awkward, but it'd protect the skin, maybe help ease the pain, now that the wound wasn't exposed to the air.

Jude had fallen back when the pain had gotten too much for him to handle but at least others were helping and in some way a few of them apparently made it worse trying to shoot at the oncoming second wave because apparently that made them angry and move faster. There was a bit of a feeling of horror mixed with morbid fascination as some of them moved to attack a couple of the other trainees but he knew that he probably couldn't take much more damage before he'd probably collapse and be useless in more ways than one. He'd run to someone to get healed but that seemed pointless to do until he was sure he was safe.

Glancing around he soon saw a building that looked very secure making it a prime piece of real estate especially since there was nothing swarming it that could injure him further. He gazed back at the fellow Trainees hearing some give out orders of a sort and earlier he had heard someone saying something about bandages.

...Was this what war was like?

He'd seen war movies and this seemed like it was straight out of a scene of one. Shrugging off the similarities he moved to drag himself toward the building where he was sure there would be safety. He wouldn't be of any use to anyone dead, dying, or just generally incapacitated. He needed somewhere to regroup before he could think to try anything else to assist the others.

The fray was getting frayier. Hanna watched as Petra retreated back, a muttered thank-you falling from her lips. The auburn-haired girl wasn't sure what she had done outside of shoot into a crowd of approaching monsters. She saw what Petra had done as being the far braver thing. Still, she replied, "Don't mention it," and then fired off another shot.

Another hunter was fighting melee with the creatures: Jordan. With Petra out of the immediate harm, Hanna turned her gun toward the pack of creatures close to the boy and attempted to hold back as many as she could, dropping her empty gun and picking up a second with a full chamber.

Someone was screaming behind her. Hanna assumed it was Gale. She didn't even realize Before had run into the acid. It was all chaos to her. She just wanted to find some sort of order in it. There were bandages left in her pocket. Hanna tried to keep it in mind. If some of the kids playing in acid didn't get out of it soon, she would start demanding it. They wouldn't be any good to Gale with third degree burns.

Behind Hanna, she heard someone shout, "No bad touch, please!" And then whimper.

A pair of angry golden eyes whipped around, gun still pointed in the distance. "Can you please get your s**t together? Pick up a gun and SHOOT IT," she snapped angrily at Before. A lot of people were talking then. He might have missed her moment of rage pinpointed at him, but all the same, Hanna felt better for just saying it out loud. Just as quickly as she had snapped, Hanna turned back to front. She had no intention of dying again, regardless of what the others chose to do.

And then everything moved so quickly. In a matter of seconds, Gale, Ennea, and Petra were all attacked. "s**t!" Hanna shouted. It was her go-to phrase.

Golden eyes moved to Scarlett and Scott. "Cover me and Petra," she said sternly, dropping to one knee beside the other girl. "Here, don't move, I have bandages, hold on." The gun was placed flat on the ground, and Hanna dug in her pocket for the bandages. There were others injured, but Petra was right beside her. She didn't seem too bad off so instead of bandaging her personally, Hanna passed a roll of bandages to Petra and said, "Can you patch yourself up? We have to stay mobile."

As she spoke to Petra, Hanna noticed a building behind them. The question was: was it a haven, or a trap? It scared her that it was the only place they could get to safely. With so many monsters around them, why had this one path been opened up? She heard Bix telling them all to retreat, but Hanna still felt uncertain.

Vaguely, she thought she heard Before talking about ******** -- what? It was certainly an improvement from the whimpering, but all in all, Hanna felt a little worried about him.

A growl snapped in front of her, and Hanna whipped her head up to see a monster charging right for her. Hands flashed to snatch her gun from the ground, and then she fired. The monster's head exploded, its body slumping forward even as its hands kept twitching. No matter how many shots she fired, they kept coming.

Golden eyes moved to the brick building again. It seemed like their only option. Even Hanna could see that they were beat out here in the open. But would being trapped in a box be any better?

Everything was moving too fast.

She heard gunshots, screams, snarls and an infinite number of deafening sounds exploding around her. This wasn't a training ground, this was a hunting ground and they were the prey. Scarlett had never dealt with anything like this - she'd grown up in the country where she had to drive miles just to see a neighbor and 'town' was twenty minutes away. She had never dealt with crowds of people, let alone teeth gnashing monsters, and murder was something she saw on TV or read about in books.

This was a nightmare.

As Hanna yelled at her to cover her while she tried to help a teammate whose name Scarlett didn't even know, she brought her gun up and tried to fire into the masses. Had she hit anything? She couldn't even see where the bullet landed. The screams from around her could have been her injured companions as easily as one of the howling monsters. As they closed in, inching closer and closer with every second, Scarlett was beginning to panic. There was no strategy in this anymore, no clear way to win and excel and come out on top. There was no logic in chaos.

She stooped then and reached out to grab Hanna by the wrist, jerking it so the girl would look at her. She had seen the building just as well as her companion had and she was willing to take the chance.

"We need to go, we can't keep fighting this." She shook her head and pointed at the building with the barrel of her gun, then turned around to look at Scott as well. "We're sitting ducks out here, they're going to keep picking us off one by one if we don't put some kind of barrier between them and us."

Even after being healed Gale still needed support. Bix was much taller and crouched slightly to hold up the younger trainee.

"Pull back to the building! Someone help her.. uhh.. Paula? PETRA!" He'd forgotten her name for a second but he didn't have time to feel stupid. It seemed like those who were trapped had quickly been freed but the mob was pressing in on them quickly. Before was screaming behind him and he paused, hoping he had a minute to help.

"I got you Before.." He let Gale lean on him if he needed to and took a minute to help his friend. The bandages were quickly pulled from his bag and applied to Before's wounds. "We have to get out of here."

He tried to help him up, attempting to support a wounded ally on each side. Bix wasn't sure he could do it and still survive. "Some help please?" The wounded needed assistance or they wouldn't make it!

Hanna had no choice but to look upward when Scarlett grabbed her wrist. She stood up to face her. The girl had a point. Staying there was bad. Hanna just wasn't confident that going to the house would be much better. "It could be a trap, Scarlett," she said gruffly. "I don't like either option. Stay here, die. Go there, walk into trap." The gun was still warm in her hand. It was the only thing immediate to her.

A monster reared up behind Scarlett. "Down!" Hanna shouted, pressing one hand on the taller girl's back to force her to bend and then firing a shot with her other. The shot was enough to force the monster to turn and stumble off in another direction. "Argh, ******** it, you're right. Time for cover," she said, backpedaling.

Hanna was still moving away from Scarlett. "I can't believe I'm about to say this, but -- I'm going to go help the ********," she said, nodding toward Before. Scarlett and Scott were uninjured and good with a gun. She trusted both of them to make it on their own, maybe even help Petra.

Without another word, Hanna darted off to Bix, Gale, and Before. She had left her bandages with Petra who was, as far as Jordan had said, Robert's responsibility. "The best help I can be in a decent shot and a pair of hands to help carry," she said briskly to Bix.

Goddamn shitting nut ********. It it wasn't one thing it was the other. Mutants, freaks, acid bile and bupcuss. The burns on Cass were open, and they wouldn't be going anwhere anytime soon with her below at least semi-protected. He didn't want her getting herself even more injured. Why did he care so much? Maybe she reminded him of his past, maybe he had a weakness for women, or maybe he thought having her alive was better than having her dead. Marcus would say it was the last part, even if he really did kind of want that kiss. He was male after all, could he really be blamed, (yes, yes he could).

Thoughts aside, he pulled out the bandages and wrapped were the acid had done the bulk of the damage. "Again, no more rushing into things." Marcus's tone towards Cass was rather protective, Taking a moment to glare at her hoping to give his words emphasis. "There, now come on." he gave her wrist a slight tug to the shack. The yells to fall back, he could only echo. Yelling to anyone who could hear him Marcus shouted, "Gather your s**t and move people! We're too exposed here!" Another look at Cass. "Come on."

Things were starting to get a bit too intense for Cass as well when it seemed like it was just one thing after the other. She looked to Marcus when he took his bandages and started to bandage it up her leg. Her eyes then went down to her leg, then back up at him.

She seemed at a loss of how to respond.

"t..thank you.." she barely spoke above a shell-shocked whisper. The glare to follow caused her to freeze a little bit before she took a deep breath and recovered as quickly as she'd lost herself in it. If nothing else, she was lost for a whole three seconds.

"I...yes." Cass took another deep breath. "Yes. Not running into that again" she swallowed down the lessening pain (funny how pressure had a way of doing that) before she tugged her wrist out of his hand, and instead linked her arm with his.

"Okay, okay! I'm coming, I'm coming!"

With that, she..well, didn't quite run, but it was as close as she was going to get with having taken herself out with her heroic antics.

“I assume the same people who think fights to the death are an effective screening process,” Scott answered Scarlett, though his comment was understandably lost amongst the shuffle of things quickly going south. As he once again changed up weapons, Scott watched several creatures break free from the pack and begin to wreak havoc on a group already splintered from chaos. He tried to make sense of the scene, but found himself only able to concentrate on one terrible thing for a few moments before another horror sprang up to distract him.

Scott tried to place names to the faces of everyone bleeding and burning around him, but everything began to coalesce into one hazy, violent blur. It was too much information at once, his mind reeling as he tried to parcel it all. People bowled over. Pinned. Bitten. Submerged in acid. Screaming for retreat. Scott took one step to the left and one to the right before stopping completely, uselessly readjusting his grip on his bat so he’d have a tight enough hold for whenever he figured out what the hell he was doing.

“Cover you?” Hanna’s voice was the only one to cut through the incessant buzz filling his head. “Then who’s going to cover us?” Protection wasn’t an option with the horde bearing down on them, two people with poor shots nowhere near enough to stave off swarms of monstrosities that could apparently grow mouths wherever they damn well pleased. They could only stand around, weapons poised, hoping things held out long enough for them to do what Scott had wanted to in the first place.

Run away.

He followed the barrel of Scarlett’s gun as it motioned to the building in the distance. He squinted, unsettled by just how obvious it was. Discussions about whether or not the place was a trap were more acknowledging than guessing, simply assuming that whatever awaited them there was just as bad, if not worse, than being devoured by shambling corpses. But what choice did they have? Scarlett was right, the only cover they had out in the open was that provided by their more delicious looking teammates.

“Right.” Well, it wasn’t. Not really. But Scott needed something to be right. He turned toward the injured Petra, tensing at the sight of blood glistening across her arm like water on a whale’s belly. He looked around for Robert – wasn’t it his job to carry her places? He had carted her out of the classroom, what the hell was he doing when it really mattered? Scott swung at a nearby hissing creature missing an arm and an eye and a soul and a sense of human decency. He only managed to smack it back a few feet, a blatant reminder that any attack out here was just a way to stall for time.

"We need to go now," Scott urged, trying to sound sensitive to the injured girl's plight, but desperation making it difficult to maintain subtlety and nuance in his usually very gentle tone.

Bix had Gale; Jordan breathed a silent sigh of relief. Still, he asked, "Got him?" He met Bix's eyes, concerned. Had they met during the test? It didn't matter, he realized. They were all on the same side now, humans against the avalanche of dark and horrible things. "I've got her," he said, and slipped a shoulder under Ennéa's arm, wrapping an arm around her waist.

Robert had Petra; he was positive of that. Whatever else the pair had in their past, they were Phoenixes now, and Hunters, and they'd take care of each other. They all would. Right now, though, Ennéa was injured, and he was the one here to help. "Ready to make a run for it?" he asked her.

An early hit had Davey dazed while the action raged around him. When the tide of enemies swarmed forward, he came back to himself. He glanced around to see that others were already rescuing the two trainees held in place. He instead took up a position closer to the oncoming mob, attacking to try and hold them off from the other trainees assisting one another.

Davey was torn between pride that some of the small groups worked so well together and envy that they had already formed the bonds of close teammates. No other Deltas appeared to have made it out of the island 'test' - at least none that had introduced themselves as such during the classroom greetings. Davey found himself wishing the other Deltas he'd worked with were here, or Thev or Deli, who he'd also thought stood a good chance of making it through. Perhaps not, though.

You could start treating the people who are here like teammates, his brain pointed out. He considered it. A valid suggestion.

He glanced either side and gave tight smiles to those also attacking the mob of opponents. A girl with strange face tattoos - Hanna? - looked especially fierce, belying her small and seemingly innocent stature.

He almost missed seeing the creature leaping at him, a swing of his baseball bat occurring at the last minute. It missed, the creature darting back to avoid the blow. Davey supposed it was small consolation that he hadn't been injured. He resolved to do better next time.

"Is everyone clear yet?" he asked those not yet retreating. The injured were the priority. Davey would do his best to hold a line of defense til most were gone and those attacking were safe to join them.

Hanna still hovered over Before, waiting to lead him to the house where the others went. He hadn't exactly proven himself to be an asset in battle. Hanna stared at him like a sack of flour: a burden to be carried. She resented him, and in her mind, she had damn good reason. Even when he went in to try and help Gale, he had been useless. He only made himself more of a burden. So much resentment: it boiled in Hanna.

Still, she had no intention of leaving the overgrown kid alone, just as soon as he would sling his arm around her shoulder.

A monster approached, and Hanna fired off a hasty shot. It missed completely, piercing the ground at the thing's feet instead. Undeterred, it continued its slow crawl toward them. "We have got to get out of here," she said, dipping low and wrapping one arm around Before. "Hobble, skip, whatever, we just have to go." The little brick sanctuary seemed farther and farther away with each passing second.

She could have just run inside - indeed, the temptation to do so was very strong. But the monsters had hit her Phoenixes now. They'd added insult to injury.

s**t was going down.

"I'll cover you!" she blurted out, vaguely aware that that was what one said at a time like this - in the movies, anyway. She leveled her gun at the advancing horde and fired.

... Only to miss. Miss?! How the heck could she miss?! There were flippin' millions of them! Surely she had to hit one just because there were so many!

But noooooooooooooo. She couldn't have nice things.
