"So...Mokutan?" The crow looked up from cleaning his wing with his beak.
"What's up Kimi-tan?"
Kimiko cast about for how to word the question. "How did you meet Maboroshi...I mean, you really seem to admire him...why?"
Mokutan gave a sort of subtle laugh. "Eh, would you believe I forgot why originally? I mean, I remember when it happened perfectly, but it was so many things at once, I don't remember what the first thing was." Kimiko looked interested, even as she continued to climb, seeming to forget the weights were there now. "The Boss saved my life back when he was little tike, fixed me up and found out I could talk, after that I went back to check up on him every now and again right? He was such a naive little kid I figured he'd hit a patch of trouble eventually." he gave a short laugh again. "Boy did I call it..."

"Yeah, that's right." Mokutan confirmed "After that whole fiasco, I managed to find the Boss, but...well, he actually found me. See I got caught in a storm while I was looking, and he saved me again." the crow shook his head in amusement. "So anyway the kid looked so different, like it wasn't even the same person. " Mokutan showed Kimiko his other eye. "His whole composure was empty, right? Like something had sucked the soul right out, and after a while of talking with him, he shifted gears like that, or, more like he made up his mind ya know?"

Mokutan explained "What I mean is, he looked like he'd been coming to grips with the truth you know? Really getting a hold of what he believed." the crow skipped up to the next branch. "So anyway, he finally got it all together, and then, poof, his look looked like it does now, he stands up as bold as steel, and says exactly what he was thinking about, the truth and good and evil and all that." the crow sounded excited now "Then he says "I think I'm going to go on a journey, do you want to come?" And I mean, lemme tell ya, that was the first time I ever called him boss! Or was it chief? There interchangeable really."

Mokutan shrugged his winged shoulders "Eh, it's hard to explain. There was just something about him, something I respected, now I can see a lot of stuff, but back then...I dunno, maybe it was just his conviction...I could tell that he was stronger then I was."
Kimiko began to consider this. "I see...I still...don't know what to think." The crow skipped to the next branch, listening. "I mean, I'm sure that he's not a bad person now...kinda, but at the same time I can't help but wish that he didn't have to go through all that...but...does that mean that I undermining all he went through to become what he is?" she gave a small sigh. "Like I said...I just don't know..."

"Maybe," Kimiko countered "But that still doesn't mean I shouldn;t worry about it, believe it or not my expectations might exceed Maboroshi's, I'm not just going to go along with whatever he has planned. I'm his friend, not his" she looked at Mokutan "Minion."
"Minion?" Mokutan rolled it on his tongue. "Minion..." he seemed to smirk "Say, I like the sound of that." Kimiko rolled her eyes.

"So," Mokutan looked back at her, having been once more picking his feathers clean. "You said that Maboroshi went after the snake Contract?"
"Yep." the bird answered unabashedly.
"You do realize that snakes eat birds right?" Kimiko pointed out.
"Oh ho ho," Mokutan laughed sarcastically "Look who knows so much, it just so happens that snakes don't eat just anything with wings and small enough brain to get close. Especially the smart snakes from the back home-"
Suddenly Kimiko seemed to realize something. "Back home...you're..." she suddenly looked shocked. "You're a summon spirit? Is that why you can talk!?"
Mokutan shrugged "Eh, Kinda. I am, and I'm not. I used to be sure, but I gave up all my fancy powers when I came to this world on a more permanent basis. You heard me before when I said I prefer humans? It's true. That's why I left my world. You guys are just way more interesting. As it is I'm just an ordinary Crow now....with a Summon Spirit sized brain of course."

Mokutan chuckled "Cranky." Kimiko looked at him innocently "Hey, don't give me that look, it's true. Don't piss one off. They may not eat us Crows, be we still had the sense to stick on their good side, their boss, Rethar, real proud type, no foolin around. He's not the type to hold grudges often, but that's only because he kills anyone who remotely ticks him off, and those that DO have the unfortunate circumstance of experiencing his grudges...well, let's just say you'd best find a really dark, really deep hole somewhere for a few solid millennia."

Kimiko was looking slightly worried "Will someone like that really obey a summoner? I mean, I heard that the Spirits don't necessarily have to obey..."
"It's true." Mokutan acknowledged. "The Summoning contracts an ancient ritual, but it's got it's holes, a smart Spirit can find fault in any command and deny it, so it's really important to have genuine loyalty from them, luckily from the snakes, that'll be easy, the boss and them will get along like bees and honey."
"What makes you say that?"
"They both respect power." Mokutan said with a smirk.

"They even got their own twisted system of honor, which is more then I can say for some of us, er, them." he chuckled "And besides, the boss doesn't have any intention of commanding someone that he himself couldn't defeat, who his will isn't stronger than. It goes against his beliefs."
Kimiko seemed to understand. "I see...so it other words Maboroshi wouldn't try and make that big guy listen to him, until he was strong enough to defeat him?" she sighed "That sounds like him. These snakes really do sound like they'd get along with Maboroshi."
"Yeah, most of them will probably love him, especially because the last real summoner they can recall was a total jerk. They still get pissed if you even say his name."
"Orochimaru?" Kimiko looked surprised.
"Oh yeah," Mokutan confirmed "If he was still alive, he'd have them to deal with. He used his strength to make them obey, but when that didn't work, he used special seals...but then, maybe that was just them talking, this all happened WAY before my time you understand. But they were always whining about it."

Kimiko continued to climb, he muscles adjusting the weights resistance now, she had to work harder... "So, why won't the snakes eat crows? Come to think of it...what does eat crows?"
"Alive?" Mokutan shrugged "Not much actually, something stupid? You gotta remember we're birds of carrion, we're immune to alot of diseases that you'd normally contract touching that sorta stuff, but not much else is. If a snake, or really anything, were to eat us, then they'd get sick a probably die. The only thing you really gotta worry about eating you when your a Crow are other crows."
Kimiko looked suddenly appalled "You're cannibals?!"

"Sure, but only after we die. I mean think about it Kimi-tan, when was the last time you actually saw a dead crow?"
Kimiko looked suddenly taken aback, stopping her climb to look at the bird oddly. Now that he mentioned it...she didn't think she'd ever seen a dead crow, EVER. Animals died all the time in the wooded areas outside the rice fields, they weren't exactly tame, but...no Mokutan was right, she'd never seen a dead Crow.
She didn't even have to say anything, Mokutan seemed to already know her answer. "Exactly. That's why we Crows are all over the place. We're smart, and not a lot tries to eat us until after we're already dead...in which case, hey, free lunch for the relatives." Kimiko was looking slightly repulsed again, but didn't remark.

Kimiko reached the half way point of the towering tree, it's size unnatural as most were around Ninja villages. She didn't seem to show any interest in stopping, and still, though she was sweating, showed no real signs of fatigue. "I see...so you're really fine with Maboroshi hanging out with a bunch of snakes then?"
Mokutan laughed "Heh, sure, more people to do the leg work ya know? I might not have to work as hard, right?"
Kimiko sighed. She didn't know if Mokutan was smart...or just...she shook her head exasperatedly. She continued unto the next hand hold, inquiring to no one in particular. "I really don't get the idea of having minions to do your work for you, Heroes don't need minions... why do villains...and anti heroes I guess."

"Simple enough," Mokutan acquiesced, pleased to answer her "I never really thought of it as being a Minion, but I guess that accurate enough. See," he lifted a foot as though he was instructing her. "When you've got loyal servants backing you, and doing your leg work for you, so seem more menacing and dangerous, so long as your tougher then the guys working for you. Like doing it yourself ain't worth your time or something. It's a mind thing."
Kimiko rolled her eyes. "I see, but why do minions go along with something like that? There's no way that I'd just bow to someone else's will like that no questions asked..."
Mokutan chuckled at something, but didn't remark, he merely said "You didn't listen? For me its cause I trust and believe in the boss. Leading is over rated, I personally prefer to just follow, and I have faith the boss will make the correct decisions ya know? You can diss that way of thinking all you like, but some cultures revered those who could live the proper life of the honored and loyal servant."

Kimiko gave him an incredulous side long glance. "I see, so your like Maboroshi's right hand guy huh? Do you even realize who much like a bad guy organization that sounds?"
Mokutan shrugged "Hey, if the shoe fits." he snickered.
Kimiko sighed in exasperation again. "Honestly...you and Maboroshi have the same weird sense of humor." She moved up to the next hand hold, the slick trunk making it hard on her all the weight the assistance of the weights. "Any way, if you've got nothing better to do than to bother me, can we talk about something else?"
Mokutan seemed more than happy to oblige, "Hey, sure thing Kimi-tan."

"I guess I could ask you few things about Oto, I haven't really thought to ask the boss about everything yet."
Kimiko raised her arm and pulled herself further up the trunk "What do you want to know?" Kimiko wasn't really a history buff, but she did know a fair bit about her home, about as any other native might anyway.
Mokutan nodded "Okay, like, just what's the deal with that Kasuke guy? Ya know, the Otokage?"
"What about him?" Kimiko asked somewhat defensively.
"What I mean is, he's really young right? Is he really the strongest Ninja in the village?"
Kimiko understood "Oh, yes, of course, but it isn't just about strength you know, Lord Kasuke's also brave and noble and diplomatic too!" she seemed to be getting starry eyed. "He's a hero!"
Mokutan sighed. "Heh, right. But even if he really is all that great, how the heck is he so strong that young? It's like that Nakamura chick right? She's not that old, but she was also really strong."
