La smiled gratefully at C'ym's arrival and attached herself to C'ym's elbow as soon as he took charge of Elae. "Of course I'll help you. Faranth, something unpleasant's afoot." There wasn't much else to say from that point, although as soon as they were off the Sands, she breathed a sigh of relief.

"That......was a mess."

There was some sort of panic going on. Had a couple of people collapsed? Merya wasn't paying much attention. They weren't significant at the moment, and from her perspective they probably never would be. If anyone asked, she'd been too busy focusing on the dragons to notice and would be - or appear - suitably concerned from a suitably safe distance. Caution was key here: if there was something worse than lice going around, Merya didn't want to catch it.

With three of her pet eggs left to hatch, including the Queen, Merya couldn't help but notice that both joker and twin had been greens. In fact, there seemed to be a lot of greens this time around. That was good, she supposed. Better than a lot of bronzes, anyway; bronzes were no good to her. She'd watched the birth of that particular rivalry with a detached sort of amusement. Everyone else had been fretting over possible between-ing, from what she could tell, but she'd found it funny. They were just two silly little boys posturing at each other. Humans, dragons...it was all the same in the end. Still, the two boys they'd chosen seemed decent enough. With luck they were decently malleable, too.

The loner, the precarious one and the Queen were still left. Merya tried to keep all of them in her field of vision at once, not worrying about blending into the crowd of girls. If her dragon was out there, it would know her no matter where she stood. There was no point in making herself obvious to the spectators unless she Impressed. She'd rather be one of a crowd left out in the metaphorical cold than That Girl Over There.

...Speaking of metaphorical cold, it was very warm in here. Perhaps that was what had felled the fainters. Merya hoped it was something like that. Better heatstroke than something contagious...

Notos accepted her efforts to stand without a complaint, only responding with a sardonic grin. "I'll leave it in your hands then." He nodded to the person he recognized as a Bronzerider. The unsteady smile hadn't fooled him in the very least. But the girl appeared to know him, so it wasn't Noto's business any longer. He left it in his hands, probably because he had three other pairs of hands to help.

Notos was wondering why the other male couldn't seem to hold Elae alone, but let it slide. "Make sure she's ok. " He said briskly, paying a moment more of his attention. A nervous bronze rider too? Man, there was alot of firsts for him today. At least there were those girls there.. La, Zara and Anne? Zara proved herself, after talking to that little .. not-healer snuff.

He stood up properly, dusting off his pants. After this incident, it was hard to concentrate at the hatching.

Notos couldn't just go back to watching eggs. Too bad, he couldn't control his conscious at will. "I think.. I'm going to leave really soon." Notos murmured to himself. He didn't feel sick or anything, simply a bit distracted.

With the passed-out girl awake and off the sands Tideal took a moment to wonder why that person kept a herb for waking the comatose in her pocket. How many people pass out when she's around?
The blond candidate chuckled under his breath. What a strange person.
As the commotion began to die down Tideal decided that if either of the remaining eggs wanted to make a statement, now would be the time. Its did seem strangely hushed for a hatching now, and the next arrival would ensue cheers and awes and get the mood back to its proper state.

Not that he much liked that idea. Loud, noisy, disappointing...
Pillows are nicer.

Annelie almost cringed at all the yelling going around, and she became very aware that more and more people were starting to look and wonder. 'Awkward' was beginning to not even explain it, so when C'ym asked her and the remaining girls for help, she immediately nodded and followed. ... NOT THAT SHE WOULDN'T HAVE FOLLOWED ANYWAYS. Elae was her friend, one of the few, and she'd stand by as long as she was needed and then some.

She moved at C'ym's other side, giving glances over Elae's carried form to La. She hadn't met the young woman before and failed at placing her at any event. Faranth, her memory was almost getting to be like Yansanth's. ... speaking of which:

ANNELIE! ANNELIE WILL YOU ANSWER PLEASE? came the desperate cries of said Yansanth. Annelie had unintentionally tuned her out in the given chaos and only now remembered the voice in her head.

Elae had fainted -- it's alright, though. She'll be fine...Hopefully.

Yansanth didn't know who Elae was. Or at least she couldn't remember her. She grew more worried, though, inspite of the fact and continued to send such feelings to Hers.

"See," O'asis pointed out the group as they handled the unfortunate Elae, "it worked out fine. Nothing to worry about, right?"

Yes, Mine, you were right, Uktenath agreed. His was lucky to have good sense with these things. He knew the things that Uktenath did not yet, like how that girl would be taken care of.

But there were still sounds of unhappiness and worry, and Uktenath wasn't quite able to relax. Mine, everyone is still upset.

O'asis looked down to the bronze, who was looking solidly back at him. Uktenath was complacent, sitting, stoic, calm - and yet, somehow, O'asis just knew that the dragon meant to express his own worry and uncertainty, not knowing what was going on, why there was so much stress at this happy occasion that had joined them together.

For a brief moment, O'asis considered leaving the Bowl. Taking his dragon, finding somewhere quiet, and feeding him until he was too stuffed to worry.

But O'asis was strong; Uktenath was strong; together, they were stronger than ever. So he grinned and stooped down. "Hey, it's all right. I'm not upset, am I?" he asked, almost boasting. "And as long as I'm not upset, we're all right. See that girl there? That's Zara, I know her. She's a Healer. And I know that one too - Annelie. You can't hope for more capable folks, see?"

Uktenath raised his head a little. I'm not upset, Mine. I was merely observing.

"I know," O'asis agreed without hesitation. "But now you know why I'm not worried, see? So it's fine." He gave that silly smile again. "So, you want some more?"

Honestly, Uktenath was beginning to lose that sense of impinging hunger - but that didn't matter, see. It wasn't a part of the deal, that he should stop eating before he was completely full. So, he answered, Yes, and waited for O'asis to get him the next bite.

Kallista watched as the Gh'lan came around. Something still did not seem right and his eyes were bright with fever. Nudging T'ka, she handed the girl the confiscated wineskin. It was cool and maybe it could help. "Try this?"

Astarteth bespoke to Haanyath. Why are they worried? What is wrong with Khunoth's rider? The green hated being out of the loop and not knowing what was upsetting her other half.

When T'ka stood up and asked for a Healer, Kallista felt the boy's cheeks and forehead. Warm all over. And he was mumbling. "T'ka. I will run for the Healer's quarters. Don't move him, give him some of the wine. I am fast, I will be right back."

Shoving people out the way and cursing them to Thread, Kallista hopped down the stair and made her way to the open hallways. Inside of Ista, it was a maze of caverns and pathways. Luckily, she had gone through most of them since coming to the Weyr. And she remembered how to reach the Healer's area.

Hurry, hurry. Even Haanyath worries for this rider. Astarteth encouraged hers.

Reaching the area, Kallista grabbed the nearest Healer, a middle aged man and yanked his arm good. He started to say something to her but she cut him off. "Come with me now! There are ill folk at the Hatching Grounds. A rider in the stands is sick!"

Tugging him again, Kallista made the man follow her back to the Stands. How long had she been gone? A quarter of a mark? Half? She had no idea but once more she shoved her way back up to where T'ka and Gh'lan were sitting. "Do something NOW!"

Distracted from the rocking eggs by first a fainter, then one of the Candidates throwing a hissy fit when she was turned away from the fainter, Rinfala felt her face drawing into a frown. Was something going around that the Healers hadn't noticed yet? Well, maybe that wasn't the right term...they'd certainly noticed now, it seemed, if the businesslike manner of the girls dealing with the fainter was any indication.

Well, no use worrying about it right now. There were still eggs left, including the queen's. Fussing at the girl wouldn't get her anywhere...what healer-ish experience she had dealt with runners, not people.

Ok… wow. Mal needed to pause for a few moments to quietly figure out what had just happened. First, Marko had quietly completed his little freak out and had apparently tried to escape from Xeran. Then the younger Harper had bodily carried Marko out. Well, kudos to Marko. Hopefully, the redheaded Harper would be happy now that he had finally gotten Xeran’s attention. And then, just when that drama had calmed down, some girl fainted? Mal, being the terminally curious type, wanted to move forward, but something stopped him.

Mostly, it was the reminder that, ‘Hey. You don’t know anything about this stuff. Let someone else handle it, alright?’. Also, there was the thought that Z’nal was probably itching to hand out more latrine duty and he did not want any. Do. Not. Want. By the time Mal’s attention went back to the dragons, he noticed that Jiriar had Impressed a lovely little Green! Well, congrats to him too! A few other people had Impressed as well, mostly boys that Mal vaguely recognized. And Conomor had Impressed too, another boy that Mal knew, albeit it briefly.

Once the Parsley Girl had stormed out, things to be really quieting down, thankfully. Mal didn’t envy the girl who had fainted though. She was bound to get some sort of lecture from someone, most likely about the benefits of ‘Staying Awake During a Hatching’ or possibly ‘Do Not Come If You Are Sharding Sick’. Actually… now that Mal looked around at the other Candidates, he noted some coughing going on. Lots of it, actually. And some more stuff going on in the Stands, something about a dragon…

Oh, shards. This did not seem good. The part of Mal that wanted to just survive no matter the cost began to look for a way out.

Ceylith whined softly and her eyes whirled with worry for Ialluth’s. C’ren. C’renmine! she whimpered, using the petname for him that she hadn’t used in a while. Ialluth says he’s not well. He needs to go to sleep as soon as the little ones are settled. Her voice suggested that she may very well whip up a bowl of good nourishing chicken soup and possibly some cough syrup for him too. And, if he was a very good boy, he’d get a new toy!

MIIINE! she bleated as one of the Candidates fell. Someone fell! She won’t get up, Mine! Any of the excitement the Green would have felt at seeing so many Impressions through C’ren’s eyes vanished at the sheer worry of seeing one of the Candidates fall over. C’ren, what’s happening?!

Unlike his dragon, C’ren stayed calm. Well, relatively calm… he was still worried over F’sey, but he had a personal stake in his health. They were… roommates, after all. And suddenly, everything was happening. So many eggs cracked open, their dragons creeping forward to find Theirs. And then those sharding Harpers over there had a fight or a… oh, who knew what they were doing? Harpers were naturally strange. Either way, one had to basically force the other one out, a view that caused much commentary amongst the watchers.

And then the Candidate fell. Oh Faranth. C’ren could only hope it was from exhaustion, from all the heat of the Sands and not something more serious. What would he do if F’sey got sick? The man was already not feeling well. That’s it! As soon as this was over, even if C’ren had to force F’sey out of there, the older Greenrider would get a decent night’s sleep.

And possibly some good healthy soup as well.

"There is quite a lot of fuss going on Mine," Naedreth observed to C'mor as he gulped down meat. "Will the falling girl be alright?"

Honestly he had been so absorbed in passing good chunks of meat to the young bronze he had hardly noticed. Passing another piece of flesh to Naedreth, he turned to observe the commotion with a slight frown of concern. "I don't know, I'm sure that... Oh, good, looks like she's waking. It was probably just the heat of the sands, candidates do faint from it sometimes." He hoped that was all it was; with so many people crowded together illness was always a worry... But not one he had time for just now. C'mor passed more food to Naedreth and stroked the dragonet's strong neck.

"Oh good, so long as she'll be okay," Naedreth replied, turning to look at the girl who had fallen with whirling green eyes as he gulped down another tasty morsel of food.

C'mor silently agreed with his dragonet, and finally took in the other new riders around him as his partner's hunger began to lessen. "Congratulations everyone," he said with another huge grin, "I look forward to flying with you!" A rider! He was actually a rider! He could hardly believe it had happened. It could have felt like a dream or a fantasy but for the very real presence of Naedreth inside his mind.

"Of course you're a rider C'morMine!" Naedreth said, rumbling in amusement as he took more meat from His. "I was born and you are Mine so I came to you and so now you are a rider. Why is that so strange?"

C'mor grinned and shrugged. "It just seems too good to be true."

Firyal had watched with some distress as Elae fainted, noticing for the first time that a number of Candidates were coughing. She didn't think she wanted to be near them, and so, though it meant moving farther away from the eggs, she edged away from the cluster of girls and the generally exciting goings-on. While everyone was distracted another Impression was made, this time by a very pale green. Which reminded her of the primary reason for everyone to be present on the sharding hot sands. Let them fuss and be sick, the nasty, self-serving part of her thought. If they're not here, I stand a better chance.

It did occur to her, though, that there was probably something serious going on, and she was educated enough to be able to point to several instances in which plague or other infectious disease had come to the Weyr, and the consequences. Going into a Pass, that was a very, very bad thing. It was a bad thing anytime, naturally, but particularly going into a Pass. The Weyrs, she had heard, were not the only group in Pernese society that had expanded drastically during the Interval. The Weyrs would need to be at full strength or more to adequately protect the increased population on Pern, now. She did hope no one was really, seriously, contagiously ill.
_____

In the stands, E'rik watched with considerably less alarm than Firyal as one of the Candidates, Elae he thought, fainted. The Sands were hot, and he hadn't been close enough to hear the coughing, so he assumed at first that was what was happening, but then Dara reported in from the draconian side of affairs. Khunoth's bondmate was ill, and it was distressing everyone from their clutch.

Dara, he said, Ask if there's anything I can do to help.

He doubted there would be, since he had no training as a healer and would be far more useful in a sick ward telling stories and singing songs than actually attempting to heal people medically. It was possible he might end up doing just that, too, if more people were getting ill than just Gh'lan. He liked Gh'lan well enough, and if the other Brownrider had wanted him to come and tell stories and sing songs he would have, but they didn't really have that kind of relationship. A whole infirmary full of people, however, would probably welcome some form of entertainment. Providing he didn't fall ill, himself.

}~{OOC @Cele: Feel free in your post to say whether Gh'lan drank the wine himself or if T'ka helped him with it. I just moved it along because I didn't want to dwell on something trivial >w<}~{

T'ka crouched next to Gh'lan, taking the top from the flask and holding it gently to the brownrider's lips. 'Would you like to try this yourself, or would you like me to pour for you?" she asked, brown drawn together with concern. if he was awake and well enough, she wanted to give him the chance to hold it himself, but if he was unwell...she had no problems with assisting him.

T'ka made no move to stop Kallista's escape. The girl was quite quick. T'ka knew she would be back soon. In the meantime, she felt his forehead and frowned. Not that there was much she could do. Being a smith didn't exactly translate into any sort of healing talent. Her frustration mounted as she had to wait. Why was she so useless.

<> Haanyath informed her green roommate. <>

T'ka glanced up at the healer's return, blinking a few times. Wow, that was fast. The poor man looked awfully winded and disgruntled, but that was hardly the problem at this point. T'ka took a step back to let the guy do his thing...whatever that was.

<> T'ka turned to look at Kyllae again. Haanyath might be right. There was something seemingly off. What was this? What was going on? Had everybody caught something? At least Kyllae was still standing. T'ka couldn't very well rush out into the sands without a very valid reason. Hopefully Kyllae would bear through it until the hatching was over, and they could get her to the infirmary. Things were not looking well.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Had another dragon impressed? Kyllae blinked a few times, trying to clear her head. It was like seeing from underwater, almost. She shook her head, clearing her vision. Why was she so weak? Falling ill at a time like this. Honestly. She had better things to do with her time. There were still three eggs left before the queen egg. She might have a chance with one of them! No use screwing it up with this illness of hers.
She was vaguely aware of some more commotion in the stands. She looked over. Was that her cousin? It looked like it. She would have to ask her what it was about after the hatching. Kyllae intended to stick around for this. No collapsing for her! Though...it was awfully hot...and she was so very tired...but no! She had to stay awake! She pinched herself, trying to instill awareness. She had to finish the hatching!
E'rik's attention was firmly diverted from the Hatching when Dara said distressedly, Khunoth's bond fainted. We should help.
I don't know if we can be of much help, E'rik told his dragon. But if it will reassure you I will join the others.
Please. I do not like that my clutchmates' humans are unwell. I am going to see if Khunoth needs support. Not that he'd admit it.
E'rik smiled at Daramulath's assessment of how Khunoth would react to an offer of support from another dragon. Probably not well, though his rider was apparently in worse condition than Kallista. What bothered him most was the terrible speed with which this seemed to be spreading. A part of him was very reluctant to join those who were already infected, but taking risks was part of what it meant to be a Dragonrider, and Harpers, too, exposed themselves to all sorts of risks on the job. E'rik was not a coward.
Ask Astarteth if she need support. You know how she'll fret if she thinks Kallista might be in any danger, he advised Daramulath.
Yes. You're right. She always criticises her human, but she loves her very much. Almost as much as I love you. Do not get sick being with the others. He sent an overwhelming feeling of affection to his rider through their bond.
I'll try, E'rik replied, making his way through the stands to where Gh'lan, T'ka, Kallista, and some others had gathered. In the back of his mind he was aware of Dara reassuring Astarteth that her human would be all right, and that human healers were quite clever and fixing people up when they felt unwell.
"Dara says you all are doing rather poorly," E'rik said as he drew near the gathering of Dragonriders. He used his Harper drawl.
At this point, Z'nal was clearly ready to have a fit. People dropping at random on the sands and in the stands? Either the lot of them were more soused than a wherry cooked in wine sauce, or they were IDIOTIC enough to have not noticed previously that they were getting sick. Farnath he hoped that wasn't the case. With the over crowded Weyr and the lice, that would be the absolute last straw, it would spread like wildfire, and over exhaust the healers because some troupe of dim-glows had figured they were far too special to ignore the symptoms of illness. Mind it could still be heat exhaustion, the hot sands, and if they'd drunk too much wine they'd be dehydrated as it was. He wouldn't put that past them. These latest batches of candidates were woefully undisciplined, and seemed to have in mind that becoming a dragon rider was to become entitled to lay about and gulp wine and pastry all day. And of course there had been that yelling idiot again. He'd have to see about getting permission to keep him off the sands next time around, after finding out who the hell he'd been trying to remove from the sands. No...check that. Find out who he'd been trying to remove from the sands, then tie him up and cram him into a small crate in the storage rooms until things were over. Let him yell at the damn tunnel-snakes.
He started to make his way toward the lower parts of the sands, teeth grinding fiercely, and followed by S'kagi.
--
"This can't be good." S'kagi noted, unnecessarily. "What the shards is going on?" He remembered the fight that had broken out in the gather, wondering if perhaps some of these youngsters had been hit with something after all, and had failed to report it, but there didn't seem to be blood on the sands yet. Concussions perhaps? But still.
"We've got to see about keeping the fuss down, damn it. The queen egg still hasn't hatched." He added, earning an soft snarl from Z'nal.
"I'm not blind." And then a little more respectfully. "We'll have to keep people off the sands as much as possible. if we have to we'll go down ourselves but we can't have another horde of dung-brains leaping onto the sands in some misbegotten sense of heroics."
Z'nal's unspoken opinion was partially that they had more candidates than they knew what to do with, but Queen eggs... a queen hatchling was a damned lot harder to replace.
It was a cold, vicious opinion, but also a very true one, if partially fueled by his raw aggravation at people's openly foolish behavior, which already was risking a hatchling going 'Between' or hurting someone, or worse, itself, in it's panic.
