Hermonie Urameshi Chikiya Hermonie Urameshi Chikiya Okays, all you better speakers than me, I need to know how to tell somebody you are a vegetarian in Japanese, because I looked it up in my dictionary and it wasn't there. Unless there isn't a word for vegetarian, and you just have to say you don't eat meat or fish? Anybody know? Thanky The only words I know how to say are 'I' and 'fish'.
わたしは and さかな. 'Watashi wa niku ya sakana o tabemasen' would go. confused The only word I recognized there was watashi...
Can anyone send me a decent sized volcabulary list in kana? And perhaps the kanji as well? My volcab. is extremely limited and I can't learn anything in roumaji. My brain just tends to reject it. I can change roumaji to kana and vice-vers however, but it takes a while for me to do it. Can you speak the words that you can type? You posted わたしは, and that's pronounced watashi. Are you a native english speaker? Also, sakana in kanji is さかな。 So 'Watashi wa niku ya sakana o tabemasen" in kana is わたしはにくやさかなをたべません。 Did you understand what the kanji sentence meant? I don't know exactly what niku means, but from the context of your conversation, it seems like it means, I do not eat anything but fish, or I don't eat fish". Since tabemasen, or "食べません”means like, not eat. I'd like to give you a vocabulary list, but my vocabulary is limited as well. I can only suggest the sites I'm using, TheJapanesePage, and Nihongo O NarauClick on "kanji" from TheJapanesePage and then scroll down the page, and then under "4 Kyuu" click "1" under "My computer can see Japanese" and you'll get a page of words along with their kanji and meaning, then you keep on going until you've learned them up all the way through level 1.

I'm native English, but now that I can read kana my brain tends to reject roumaji so there's only a very few I can recognize that way. I don't know why. It just happens. That just seems to be the best way I learn. Thanks for the sites.

Hello, i'm planning in studying Japanese seriously (Know the basics like Hiragana, remeber most of Katakana and know some Kanji. I'll be taking a class online soon, it's a college in Mesa Arisona).
I like to know other books and cd's people used.
I order some books for the school (forgot the name of them)
I have the Instant Immersion Japanese disk for computer,Hiragana chart, How to write Hiragana book, the Living Language cd and book, Japanese-English dictionary from Random House, Japanese from Mangaland books and for fun-a Japanese slang book.
I'm curious to know what you guys used, what you thought was the best or how you learned (in school, self-taught,ect..)
Most from what I learn- Hiranaga is the first think to learn when writting and also to use it to read book (like start with Japanese kid books or just read manga since most have Hiragana and Katakan and use furigana to help with Kanji you don't know yet).
I have a hard tell words in Japanese, since it's written so close together, i'm not sure at times if it's one word or more then one (part of a different word) Also need work on Kanji and writting and speaking (putting sentences together).

I use Rosetta Stone and ask for help with particles online. I'm self-taught, which, I think, is the best way to go. I know all the hiragana and katakana by heart and I also know most of grade 1 kanji as well as a few others from higher grades. And I've only been seriously studying for a few months. I also know some grammar, but I hardly speak in Japanese right now.

I know all the hiragana and katakana by heart and I also know most of grade 1 kanji as well as a few others from higher grades. And I've only been seriously studying for a few months. I also know some grammar, but I hardly speak in Japanese right now. I never heard if Rosetta Stone, I should check it out. For the most part i'm self-taught but i'm going to take a college course soon (to earn college credit for one thing). Particles is one thing I need alot of help on.

If you're going to take a college course then don't get Rosetta Stone. It's very expensive.

If enough people are interested, I could set up a mule who could befriend those who are interested and send a friendlist PM of a Kanji per day. I think it's a practical idea, because I want to learn a Kanji a day myself as well.
And of course, if anyone else would rather take upon the job than me, I wholeheartedly encourage this. wink
