Maya finished the first hide easily, taking a minute to scratch Baki behind the ears as she settled it back into the barrel to soak a while longer, until it was ready to get tanned. She murmured quietly to the lion, studying the second deer hide. It was larger, of course...it was the buck's hide. Maya snorted softly and leaned backwards, starting to push the fur off this one too. It was slightly harder, probably because the buck's coat was longer than the doe's for some reason, and Maya sighed. She looked around - she'd kept the antlers right? They'd be useful later on when she felt like carving or something. She chuckled; she hadn't carved or sketched in ages, and even then, she'd done it hidden in a tree or some dark, damp, secluded area. She sighed, and ran her hand through her hair. How very amusing, that the one thing other than fighting that she was good at, and it embarrassed her. Maya still didn't know how to fully comprehend the letters and words in the books around the village, but...she hadn't recently needed to know, and had put it from her mind. Carving, though, brought it back to her attention. She sighed....she would have to practice that...What if the brat trio found out she couldn't read well?

With great ease and deliberation, Maya slid the sharp edge of her kunai along the deerskin, the fur sliding off and amassing in a thick clump on the snowy ground. Maya continued until the would-be leather from the buck was completely hairless, and studied it. She had worked exceptionally hard on the hunt, the skinning, and now the tanning that would come soon after. In a few hours she'd be moving on to the final phases of finishing the leathers and fur, and she was moderately excited. She had been doing well so far, and Maya hoped her luck would stay. Dipping the leather back into the barrel with the doe's skin, Maya covered the barrel with another scrap that had been lying around, and looked around for the pieces leftover from the hunt. The skulls were still there, good - Kore hadn't gotten into them, nor had any other scavengers. Within the skulls...all three brains still resided. Maya grinned - this was probably her favorite part. She set the doe, buck, and lynx skull right next to each other, upside down so that the brain settled cozily within each one. Yep, in a few hours...she would have oodles of fun with continuing to work. Setting herself down next to Baki, Maya closed her eyes and dozed off for a little while. The brats wouldn't be back, not with the amount of meat she had demanded from them.

Maya awoke, stretching herself out and rubbing her eyes. Enough time had passed, that much she could tell, from when she had set the skins back in the water. Now...now was the fun part. Maya grinned and grabbed the lynx skull first, peering within it and poking at the gooey, firm blob within it. With the bone from the buck's foreleg, Maya began mashing the lynx brain into the pulpy liquid mash that she would spread over the lynx hide. She would do one at a time, so that way it wouldn't get too hectic. Or better to prepare the mash all at once, in all three skulls, so that the leathers would dry at the same time? That sounded better to Maya, smarted, and she continued to work at the pinkish purple blob, ignoring the small drops of blood that had stayed on for whatever reason. Maya chuckled at that thought, then sighed. This was starting to worry her - her amusement with hunting, how easy it game to her to simply mash this beast's brain so she could use it to tan its fur. How ... animalistic. Barbaric. Wild.

The thought made a smile tug at Maya's lips, a smile just dying to come out. But the feeling was all too similar to when she had killed the Kaguya woman in Tonato...she was enjoying it too much. Maya bit her lip harshly, not having had to resort to the bad habit in quite some time. The blood flowed over her lip, though the girl paid no notice...

Soon, though, the metallic smell wafted up to her nostrils, and combined with the mash she was making, Maya's hands flew to her mouth and she gagged slightly. Ugh! What was wrong with her!? Normally blood didn't bother her - she was always covered in it anyway, because of sparring with Baki. But just a tiny bit today and she was nauseous. How strange, and unnerving...Maya closed her eyes and took a deep breath, her lips set in a firm line and her hands covering them, keep the blood there. She would have to deal with it after she moved her hands, but that would be then, and this was now. Maya was unsure of why this was happening - had she not killed a woman in cold blood, and then licked the blades of her weapon. The memory made her gag slightly, and she shook herself out. Maya pulled her hands back slowly, eyes closed and holding her breath. She felt for a handful of snow and rubbed it on her lip until she felt sure enough to take another breath - the need for air, too, convinced her to take the chance. What was the worst that could happen?

The bile in Maya's throat receded, though still threatening to spill over. She sighed, wondering why exactly that had happened. Done with the lynx's brain, she reached for the buck's brain and repeated the process, after, of course, cleaning off the surface of the bone she was using to mash the brains into a thick, vicious fluid-type thing. Maya breathed slowly, trying not to inhale too much of the smell. Perhaps it was because she had never actually done this before, had simple observed Shuga doing it from afar. She did know she was doing it right - the lynx 'rub' looked the same as how Shuga's had turned out, so at least Maya was confident in that. She worked, grinding the pink goop against the skull, working it thoroughly so that there were no lumps in the 'rub'; that way it would be much easier to spread out on the leather. She gave a wistful smile - Shuga would have been proud, of that she was sure. She and Baki had brought home two large deer and a lynx...had Shuga been here, they would have had a feast. Instead, Maya was keeping what she needed and using the rest to help the rest of the village. She didn't need a feast when she was alone. Well...that wasn't fair. Karite did want to join her...though where Xyn had gone, it was anybody's guess. Maya signed and closed her eyes for a moment - everyone left. When would Karite leave? She wouldn't let him take Kore...Kore was part of the pride..! But then...if Karite was adopted, Kore would be his partner. And wherever Karite went after that, Kore would go too...

The smell was too strong - and the memories too fresh. Maya choked and gagged again, shoving the now-done mixture away next to the lynx skull and scrambling to her feet, heaving the contents of her stomach out into a ditch behind a tree. She felt dizzy now, and suddenly wished she hadn't been so harsh about her quota with the trio. They'd be useful in helping her around the camp, after all, even if they wanted to kill each other. Well, if they killed each other, at least that way she didn't have to hunt more to feed them. Maya's head swam and she sat on a boulder - was she still sick? She had probably caught a virus or another type of cold after running around barefoot half the winter season. The snow wasn't a forgiving opponent when it came down to it. Maya rubbed her temples and sighed; perhaps it wasn't the best day in the season to be doing work like she was supposed to be doing...but then, if not today, when? Chuunin exams were supposed to be soon - Aya had ranted about them at one point, or had it been Shinichi..? She had heard about them somehow.. or was she imagining things?

Maya smoothed her hair best she could and eyed the doe's skull. Her stomach threatened to spill again, though what, she had no idea. There was nothing left, and yet Maya felt the urge to get rid of more. Rubbing her eyes, Maya sat with her legs crossed in front of the fire, wondering when the trio would get back. She had set a steep quota...but she had been angry with them. Disappointed. Upset. She growled softly and covered her face with her hands. She should go help them...they'd gone towards the forest of sorrows. Should she go though? Maya looked up at the sky.

No...they had to fight as a team, and lose as a team. She had already hunted enough for a couple of days, and Baki needed the exercise anyway so hunting was no big deal for her. She chuckled at that - at the rate she was going, she'd never be able to hunt with a straight face again. She needed to find out what sort of sickness she had, and quick.

In the meantime, though...the doe's 'rub' still had to be prepared. Maya took a deep breath and pulled the skull towards her, rinsing the bone and repeating the mashing action. Smooth, smooth smooth...slow, slow...Maya breathed slowly and calmly, finding the smashing of the brain easier now that she'd done it twice. She sighed internally, making a note to go to the clinic...if, of course, the problem persisted. Maya looked over at the three smaller barrels full of water that she needed for the second half of the mixing, and then over to where she had neatly stacked the fat from each animal. She wrinkled her nose and finished off the doe, and stood for a second, rolling her shoulders. What was the next step again...?

Ah...the skins, right. Placing each mushy 'rub' brain substance in front of one of the three smaller barrels filled with cold water. Then she pulled the skins from the larger barrel, as well as the lynx fur, and lined them up with their corresponding bucket. She stretched out, and having accomplished that tiny little feat (mixing them up would probably be really bad, though she would never know - Shuga had never, ever, not once, made the mistake - not even drunk), Maya debated what to do next. She could add the brain first then dunk the skins, or cover the skins...or was she supposed to dunk the skin then add the brains? Maya bit her lip and thought for a minute, the quelling sensation in her stomach rising then falling, rising then falling.

Maya didn't remember. She sighed and plopped down, nuzzling Baki's mane and tolerating his rough tongue over her neck. It was starting to irritate her, how incapable she was of remembering certain things or doing certain others. Infuriating - and where were the troublemakers? Maya hadn't expected them to actually stay out that long... They wouldn't be able to catch much, not with them being as injured as they were. She almost felt bad - but they had to train eventually. She snorted, shaking her head and hugging Baki's neck, her hands trailing over the old scar he had received in Tonato, then over the worn leather collar Seshiro had made for him. Maya frowned. Why was she fighting for this island, when all that ever happened was that she got hurt? She didn't understand...why was Shuga so loyal to this place..?

Maya reached for the easiest one - the lynx skin. She had finally remembered - it was rub, then soak. With what seemed like practiced ease, she carefully rubbed the brain mash into the skin-side of the fur, careful to apply the greasy mess evenly so that it would make the skin pliable once it dried. With a small smile to herself, because for once she had remembered how to do something completely on her own, Maya worked diligently and worked until she had covered the entire fur in the thick, disgustingly greasy stuff. Disgustingly greasy? Maya snorted - there was definitely something wrong with her. Normally this kind of stuff wouldn't bug her at all, but really? It was annoying her? How strange.

Her work was going moderately well. Maya smiled to herself and set the lynx fur to soak, then reached for the next one. The doe, of course, since she was a female. It was a girl thing, Maya supposed. She eyed the buck's skin and sighed. She had hunted a good deal on her own...and again she thought about the 'quota' she had set for the trio. She winced; if they actually came back with all that she had demanded, she would have to find out how they did it ... and studying the kills would tell her everything she needed to know. Rabbits, Kore could handle. But deer? Maya groaned, pausing and squeezing her eyes shut. Better that they came back with nothing than with everything...because even she couldn't protect them if Shinichi found out. Maya sighed and rubbed the brain-mess into the doe's skin, working it slowly and evenly until she had completed it and was satisfied with it. She smiled slightly, and then set it to soak like she had the lynx fur.

Maya hesitated as she contemplated that. What would Shinichi do if the trio brought back the entire quota, and Maya found out they had used some shady means to do so? Who would get punished? The three of them, right? They'd be the ones in trouble, for having done something wrong...but was Maya thinking too far? She rubbed her forehead wearily, unaware that she'd just streaked leftover doe brains across her face. Handling Shinichi seemed to be a matter of much more importance right now, and she had no idea whatsoever how to do that. Maya sighed and looked down at the last skin she had to do - the buck. It would probably be troublesome to do it, and that, again, led back to the trio - she'd have to skin everything they brought back, since she was almost completely sure none of them had ever done it alone. But then, neither had she, and she'd done just fine, right..?

Maya doubled her thinking and frowned. If the trio did something wrong, Shinichi would hold her responsible. She growled softly, eyes narrowed. She would be pissed if that happened, and then Tenko would be mad too. And maybe Kumiko. Shinichi would probably find some pride in the matter since she would absolutely slaughter all three shinobi-in-training and run Kore ragged until he was at least half as strong as Baki. Maya scowled and her attention was taken from the buck left to prepare - those three should have been back by now. What was taking them so long?

Maya set aside the buck in her mind and leaned further into Baki, earning herself a sharp n** to the face that cut her cheek. Though it was only a half a centimeter in length and probably not more than a flesh wound, the sharp winter air amplified the tweak of pain; Maya cringed and reached to touch it, but again Baki's teeth found her anatomy and he caught her wrist gently in his mouth. His soft growls alerted her at least to the brainy goop on her hands. She winced; she was just asking for an infection. With a sigh, Maya made a low purring noise in the back of her throat, straightening herself out and simply sitting next to her partner. He released her wrist and lay his head on her lap, and Maya removed the gloves on her hand and suffered the biting wind for a few minutes as she scratched his ears and head. Where was her head today? Just a little bit ago she had been breezing through the skins, ready to finish - and now, her mind had wandered. She was getting as bad as Aya, except her thoughts were nowhere near as bubbly as the light-headed girl's.
