"I'm not sure," Dari said. He didn't really know the elf's sleep schedule, only that their workday began at roughly the same time.
Footsteps could be heard padding down the stairs. It was Toby, his eyes resting atop some fairly dark circles. His face was impassive and he was wearing a full set of pajama pants and a t-shirt as opposed to his usual toplessness or shameless boxer-wanderings. He regarded the pair in the living room but said nothing to either of them, instead heading for the kitchen.

"I made pancakes," Maia said as Toby wandered into the living room. He looked awful. Had he slept at all? "There's a plate for you if you're hungry," She sat up, looking at him. "I was thinking of taking pancakes to Lori."
She took out her phone, texting Lori and saying she'd bring pancakes to him.

Toby went into the kitchen and he stood and stared at the pancakes. He didn't know why. His mind was empty. He just stood and stared. It took a good 12 seconds before he decided to take some on a plate, grab some syrup and eat. He'd need to eat something. He hadn't had dinner. He also didn't really feel like cooking. He didn't say anything to anyone, though. He just moved to the dining room table.
Dari gestured hopelessly toward the stairs that Toby sat on the other side of. See? This. This was going to be the next few days.

This was almost worse than the bad week Toby had had a few months ago. Maia sighed, looking to Dari. She really wished she hadn't said anything. "Should I talk to him?" She asked.

"You can try," Dari said. He didn't add that it might also be sort of creepy and dispiriting.

Maia nodded, going to join Toby at the table. "I thought maybe we could make a cake later," She suggested, sitting down across from him. "Or watch a movie. Whatever you'd like."
Anything to get things back to the way they were.

Toby looked up to Maia and realized that it sort of hurt. Oh boy. This wasn't going to be fun at all. "Sure. If you want to." He forced a little smile. "The pancakes are good." He took this as an excuse to look back down at them.
Dari entered and took up a third seat at the end between the two.

"I used your recipe," she said. She was realizing this conversation was harder than she'd expected it to be. "Would you like to go out to coffee with me?" she asked, hesitantly. "We could go to that cafe you like."

"I think I'm good with what we have here. Thanks, though." He had to forget her, all the while wanting her. He had to avoid leading her on while wanting nothing more than to sweep her off of her feet. Life sucked.

A week passed, Maia had given up asking Toby to do things for the most part. It was a nice day, normally she might have asked if they could look at the stars after work. Maybe sit on the porch and talk. Play a game.
Instead she was subdued when she entered their office. "Hey guys," She greeted. She sat in her chair, pulling out her phone and starting a game of happy jump.

Dari smiled and offered a wave when Maia entered. Toby smiled just the same.
"Hey, Maia!" he said, "Learn anything interesting today?"
Toby had come back to normal... sort of. It was a normal of a bygone era when they were still friendly strangers, before there had been any sleepovers or hugs. He had pulled away and set himself at an arm's length, at a friendly sort of base. It killed him, but it was the only thing he could think to do.

Maia looked up from her game to smile at Dari. "I learned about Rome today," she said. "Some ancient stuff. Its interesting." If a bit brutal. Romans we're definitely big on war and taking over things. "I don't like their belief system much, though."
Jupiter was a creep.

Toby realized he didn't smile at her. At first he was offended, now he thought it made it easier to let go... to a point. He was still having trouble.
"We learned about complex tenses too," Dari said, speaking to Toby, "We're in high school English now."

"Yeah, that too," Maia looked towards Toby. "I'm getting better every day." She'd been delving into young adult books, especially the high fantasy genre. "I'm reading a new series of books. It's about this girl who makes hats, and a castle that moves. I didn't get too far into it though."

"Oh? That sounds interesting," Toby said with a nod. He had no idea what series she was talking about. Maia had moved well outside the classics and fairy tales by now. At least she was reading. She had come a long way from Gaelic intake forms.
