Meru Lee I just switched to 1st clarinet reciently. (yea me!)
but anyways, now I have a note that I cant play gonk ... It's the highest E above the staff that's playable on a clarinet. Anyone have any tips for playing those really high notes? *cracks knuckles* Havente been to this forum in far too long... OK, so E above the staff is usually fingered thumb, register key, 2nd and 3rd finger on the left down, and sometimes uses the right hand Eb pinky key for intonation. If you can't get it to speak, you might be using too weak reeds, or you arent's supporting with enough air. Try practicing lip slurs in the low regsiter by fingering the lowest E and then supporting with air and pressing the register key to hit the B. Let me know how you do.

Kay5295 most of my notes have a good tone, but my middle b flat always has a bad tone. i have the same embouchure when i'm playing all of my notes...is there something wrong with my clarinet? The notes that do not have fingers covering holes are called throat tones, and they include G, Ab/G#, A, Bb/A#, and the alternative fingerings for B and C (dont worry about those). It sounds airy on most horns, and that's usually based on the reed/ligature setup, condensation, breath support, and sometimes the instrument itself. You are using the standard fingering for Bb I'm guessing (A key and register) and that is the 'fuzziest' sounding note on the clarinet. If you are play sustained notes or have time to move fingers around, you can also use the trill fingering (A key and the second trill key above your right hand... use a tuner to find the right note if you're having problems.) Try keeping your reed clear of condensation (remove reed, wipe of the droplets) or briefly and discretely suck the spit back like a straw (soudns gross but it isnt).

Perhaps I should introduce myself. I'm John, a college student majoring in music ed./composition and I've been playing clarinet for 8 years now... I've taken private lessons for at least 6 of those years, and I own a Bb, A, and soon an Eb R-13 clarinet. I've studied intsrument repair and have learned a great deal about reeds, alternative fingerings, clarinet technique, practice and performance material, as well as give critique to anyone willing to show me their stuff. Although I sign into Gaia almost daily, I haven't checked forums in ages, but I reply to PMs fairly quickly, and other contact info is available upon request. Feel free to ask me anything you want, because I will always have an answer.

Hola fellow claries!!!
Been a clari for....(counts on fingers)....7 years now!
Been marching for two years. I could brag about WLHS's band 24/7- almost. The freshmen weren't...broken in very well. >.< But we are getting a drill instructer next semester, so that's awesome!
(I was scared to death of my section leader from my freshman year- and that's the way it should be. Sorry- i'm strictly conservative when it comes to marching.)
Heh......RAIDER PRIDE!!! razz xd 3nodding rofl

I'm a freshman right now, but I loved my section leader. We had way too much in common.
But the clarinet section is obviously the best, most amazingly fantastic section in the history of time. Except for the whole "we can't be heard when marching very well" thing
So let's keep living it Just keep living it Really living it!

I also study 5 languages, keep updated on anything technology-wise and politics, and I read over 20 different magazines... it helps that my job is to sell them from a kiosk, lol. Also, I like to think my Treo 750 is much better than the Iphone with all the changes I've made wink

Heylo, I'm Jess. I'm in middle school, but next year it'll be high school (yay^^). I've been playing the clarinet for five years, give or take. Currently, I play 1st clarinet, plus the bass(wow, I just realized that on all of the other posts I've recently made with the word 'bass' in it, I've spelled it 'base'. Crap.) in one of our concert songs. Next year, I WILL join the marching band no matter WHAT my mother tells me. So ya. I just popped in to say hey and see how many other people played the clarinet. Mkay, bye now...

I'm a freshman (9th grade) at BHS. Well, still in junior high cause we don't go into high school until we are in 10th grade. I love playing clarinet the most out of the four instruments I play. I have been playing for 7 years, since I was seven, and almost 8 years. I plan to go to college for music education. I want to spread my love of music to young people of the future.
