With a nod to Fuji and Kohyoh, Nyl got up from the table and walked back outside, stopping at the fountain. She waited for Reeve.

When Reeve reached her, she met his eyes with her own. She looked different, barriers lowered. Like a creature being hunted.
"I cannot express in limited language...what we went though, my old friends and I. What...what it is like when your enemy knows you as well as you know yourself."
Nyl closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and turned around. Her hands balled into fists as the air around her shimmered, and her wings appeared. Most of the right one was torn away, leaving a few glittering feathers. The left was half gone, too, the remainder of it shredded and broken. It was possible, in that light, to see the stains on the back of her shirt--nearly invisible against dark fabric--where it appeared actual, flesh-and-blood wings had been torn away.
