Guild Wars would probably give you a good feel for MMOs. And since there's no monthly fee... you only have to buy the initial game. Of course, it has expansions up the wazoo, but hey.
I can also give out trials for WoW and CoH in case anyone is that interested. Hehe. They usually last for 10-14 days or so, and you can get a character up a few levels to see if you likes it. ^^;

City of Heroes. (It also contains City of Villains). Basically, you run around fighting bad guys and make yourself super cool costumes. But it also costs 15 bucks a month. sweatdrop

Yeah, I know. I've heard of and played DotA before. I tried making my own in the editor but soon lost interest. I prefer making campaign/rpg maps like "Founding of Durotar" features.
Yeah, the a Warcraft 4 is seeming more and more distant as WoW becomes more popular. I also don't like that it tends to suck away people's lives.
The only problem is that Guild Wars is far too easy. Plyaing casually, a gamer could reach the maximum level in a month or two. Where's the fun or challenge in that? I know Guold wars was meant to appeal to a larger group, including non-gaming-addicts, but still...
I've tried MMOs in the past (the free ones), but they never hold my interest for long, because the effort expended yields little results. Not to mention that I prefer being the only sentient character in a room (aka = I like offline single-player rpgs).

Not to mention that I prefer being the only sentient character in a room (aka = I like offline single-player rpgs). You're right that Guild Wars' story mode could be beatable alone. But Guild Wars' major point of interest is the difficulty of Guild wars and PvP battles. I mean, compare it to WoW: In WoW, you get to take ALL of your learned skills, anywhere. In Guild Wars, you can only take 8, one of which is an Elite Skill. And since there are hundreds of skills for all professions, and a lot of really good Elite Skills, you are forced to think of a strategy where your skills work, not only with each other, but with the rest of your team mates. Oh yeah, if I remember correctly, the maximum team you could've had in a party was 16 . . . compared to WoW's 40-man raid. Which seems easier now?
