I just think the whole thing is idiocy. Who the ******** is he to decide what is and isn't cool? Funnier yet, that thread might have ONCE been relevant, about a decade or so ago, but these days the acceptability of watching cartoons at ANY age is massively on the rise. I dare say that right now it is more or less neutral when one figures in how common it is to find people who casually watch either western or eastern cartoons on a regular basis... One of the most successful blocks for the ages of 16-28 is Adult Swim, and now not one, but two major japanese animation distributors are making their own cable networks (and another two are talking a bit about it). s**t, there's only one Sci-Fi network, think about that for a second...

Not only that, but several kids cartoons have massive followings among adults without children.

I'd say that Mireo has no ******** clue what he's talking about. If he had stuck to merely seeming to say that watching j-anime isnt in an of itself a cool act I'd say he was merely on shaky ground. Unfortunately he seems to have crossed the line into saying that it is inherently uncool... a point that he is sadly wrong on. Given that I'm sure he knows better, I'm inclined to believe that he's openly trolling with that thread. As such I will take no part in it.

Um, would you believe story writing? Aside from spelling, Grammar and English were my best subjects. Everybody thought I was nuts because I loved diagramming sentences. *shrugs* To each his own.

Hand crossbows are generally cocked by hand by holding it at arm's length by the pistol grip and grabbing the string with two or three fingers of the other hand and pulling it back til it clicks against the trigger (not the one your finger pulls, this one is the lever that holds the string back). Then you place the bolt against the string and you're ready to go. They're a bit on the slow side and not as powerful as a regular crossbow or bow (and lack their range), but they're concealable, quiet, and don't need a lot of space to fire. From short range a shot to the head or vitals should do the job nicely. The bolts (or quarrels, if you want to be more historical) it fires are about six inches long.

A regular crossbow can be cocked any of three ways. The lighter ones often have a metal loop at the business end that you put your foot in to brace it while you grab the string with both hands and drag it back to the trigger. This is the kind you'd be most likely to have. It has decent range (100 yards easily, maybe 150 if you're a good shot), good damage, and is still pretty quiet. It still requires less room than a bow, but just a little more than rifle. Its bolts are about a foot long and both of larger diameter and heavier weight than arrows.

The other two ways to c**k a crossbow that are still in use are a winch that uses a forked hook called a crow's foot (hold out your first two fingers like you're gonna poke someone's eyes out. now bend them almost all the way at the first two knuckles... that's what it looks like) you hook over the string and crank back. Sometimes these are battery powered, but in a survival setting that would be a bad idea. This is also the slowest cocking mechanism, taking as long as two minutes to crank the string back, but it allows for the heaviest pull strings (pull = strength of the crossbow, just like with a bow).

The last and least common today is a lever that looks like a lower case Y. It is detatched from the bottom of the bow and the upper parts of the Y are placed upside down against the string and the bow at the end of the crossbow. Usually the lower arm of the y would be sicking in the air pointing slightly towards the user. You grab this and pull it to force the string back.

All in all I'd say that the light crossbow with the loop for the foot would be the best. It can load more quickly than the other large crossbows, but has greater range and striking power than the hand crossbow. It also can be useful for hunting food.

Not really. Its not a civil offense, its a federal offense. Municipal and state offenses are often backed up by a civil code, but the feds are protective of their territory... especially the postal service.

The most you'd be able to hit them with is invasion of privacy, and that's barely backed up by a slap on the wrist.

My problem is that the newest batch of AMC "helpers" (both the good and bad ones) is too busy trying to emulate their idols to actually develop their own manner of doing things. Thus, rather than actually presenting points that they truely feel for and believe in, they try to present a viewpoint they usually don't fully believe in and often don't understand. Even idiots can smell this kind of bullshit from miles away and lack any respect whatsoever for it. This is where we get the bullshit responses of "go post in the official thread", "VS topics shouldn't be allowed", and the five thousand "this is in the wrong place" responses.

This is way I feel as strangely as I do about the concept of fan clubs for AMC regs. They tend to breed fanatics.
