The store you shop at doesn't make you a conformist. By living in a country ruled by market and the economy, we all have to conform unless we're living on a tropical island that has yet to be discovered by humankind.
In terms of Hot Topic, I think it's a disgusting store and the majority of youth shopping there are severely misguided (buying the anarchy symbol is a sign of pure ignorance), but that doesn't make you conform any more or less than having a social security number.
