Nihilistic_Impact While it is just a scene from a movie it is also fact. A gun gives range that a sword can not, along with a lethality greater then that of a sword and less effort is needed. It is a rare event when someone with a sword or any blade for that matter will beat someone with a gun. .... KAWAII! *glomps*

A gunblade has a practical function, but only if you're at some risk of running out of ammo very quickly. Like a musket and a bayonet. If I remember correctly a gunblade fires some sort of whacked out laser beam. Going off of just a projectile weapon a gunblade is stupid. For one there is the issue of recoil, a sword handle is not the best way to handle recoil so you have less velocity of the bullet so you can actually aim the weapon, that means less stopping power. And then there's holding the gunblade while firing, you can't hold it like a rifle because of the blades edge. A musket on the other hand is more like a polearm. In the FF design the handle was contoured like a pistol grip, to assist in recoil managment. Yes, Snow's design is wholey flawed, I see that. I was talking about the original prints, from which his weapon is derived. A gunblade is a horrible design, I know, I'm not even about to defend it. But I'm not about to say it's useless, and can not be worked out either. You would balance the firing mechanics and magazine in a revolver format behind the blade as it, letting the full length of the blade counter the back weight. Much like a Rapier or a Cutlass.

EDIT: Yes, I know my gunblade design is flawed -- that's why I'm finding another means to design it, other than copying it right off of FFVII's AC gunblade... I welcome the concept of blocking bullets with fancy sword play.
Makes things more interesting.
People already have a wide array of catastrophic powers.
I fail to see how deflecting or blocking bullets with a sword cannot be met with a compromise for the sake of entertainment.

You need your tanker, Healer/Support, Main ranged fighter, medium ranged fighter, Magic caster, and maybe someone light and fast.

This is percisely why I used the example of a bayonet and rifle. Because it was a highly practical weapon for the times. The only ways a FF gunblade bests a Rifle and Bayonet combination is in the CQB and weight fields (maybe even concealment, but it's got a blade on it). But even the you'd get the best of both worlds with a cavalry carbine equipped with bayonet lugs.
