So no matter what she said, there was going to be a freak out. Maia sighed. "I've kept it secret so long, I've wanted to tell him for ages." She didn't know long She could continue to keep it secret. "So he won't be happy? Maybe a little?".

"I still believe that he has feelings for you." In fact Dari knew he did. That didn't mean it would be any easier to get him to confront his own feelings. "I think he will mostly be scared. He hasn't had feelings like this in a very long time, and you know what happened to Carolyn."

"You think so?" Maia smiled slightly at the thought. Yes, that made sense. He'd been allowing her to hold his hand, be close to him, cuddle, sit on his lap... He did Like her, didn't he? "Scared, why?" She paused, smile quickly fading. "I know."

Dari just nodded. Maia was smart. She knew. He could by no means guarantee that a romantic relationship with Toby would grow to such a point as it had with Carolyn, but Dari saw how turned-off Toby was at the idea of any sort of committed relationship. It was easiest for him as it was now; closeness and affection without any classification. Of course that didn't make it right.
"Just be gentle with him. With anything else there's no reason to hold back, but with this you need to be careful."

Maia nodded. She'd be careful. "I will be," She promised. "I'll be gentle." She was really rather worried about telling Toby now; what if he kicked her out? Decided they couldn't be friends because of her feelings? "And you'll be there to help?" She asked. "Well. Not there, there, I ought to tell him alone. But there. You know."

"Absolutely." Dari offered Maia a smile and reached over to place his hand atop hers. He had been typing, so his fingers were marginally warm. "Don't be afraid. The worst case scenario has him lying about himself. He won't do anything drastic."

Maia forced a smile. "I'll try not to be," She said. It would be hard; She didn't want things to go badly. "Lying about himself?" She echoed. "Like what? Saying he doesn't care for me?"

"Oh, no. He would never deny caring for you. I would expect he may deny he has romantic feelings for you, however." He didn't dare use the "l" word himself, even though he knew the look Toby got in his eyes when he thought nobody was looking.

Maia nodded.
She paused at the question, thinking it over. "I hate It," she said. "I don't know if what I'm feeling is selkie love or not," and if it was, she thought she'd loathe herself for it. "Leaving people who love you seems like the most selfish thing in the world. I don't know. Distance helped Niamh. It didn't me. It made it worse. I kept thinking about you guys."

Dari briefly looked shocked. How did she know about Niamh? Had Lori told her?
"Well. Hopefully it isn't selkie love, then. Anyway, I don't think the selkies running off had really consented to their relationships, but that's something to bring up with Lorien if you're curious. I hope you're right." He'd love if she was right.

"Still, it's wrong to break someone's heart like that," Maia pointed out. "Its different if their pelts were stolen. Then whoever stole them is an a*****e. But! Selkie love, where the selkie's in love with the person until they've fallen in love and are no longer lonely?" She shook her head. "Selkies are terrible people, Dari. It'd be easier to just say I loved him, if I were anything else."

Dari actually smiled. "I'm glad you think so. You've matured so quickly, Maia. You should be proud of yourself. Selkies are not terrible people, though. There are good and bad like anywhere else. I don't think just anyone runs away." He stopped then and raised a finger. Maia had made a good point. "He would likely deny you loved him truly. Your biology is an unfortunate match, but I think there's more to this. We can get him."
