Overall, it was quite nice. The in-laws were a lot overbearing, but got some great shows in my DVR (Dr. Who marathon, and a concert of the show's music! Win!), far more toys than I had hoped for, several DVD sets that will brighten my library . . . a very good christmas!
And you, my old friend? I hope things went well for you as well.

Well enough. My entire family is home for the holidays, and I loathe my siblings... Still, it wasn't bad. I got all of Yu Yu Hakusho, a few old games (Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, and Rayman 3), and Sonic Colors.

Well, I got three Transformers, including some very interesting models. Oddly enough, I also picked up Avatar and the third season of Avatar: The Last Airbender. xd I also thanks to my wife picked up the third section of Code Geass! Gods, I love me some Geass . . .

I'm hoping to start getting the Avatar:LA series. The pricing isn't awful, but I'll have to wait on any serious collecting until after I graduate from college.
I take it the third part of Code Geass you're referring to is the first part of R2, right? Code Geass was a good mecha anime, though Gundam Wing and Gurren Lagann are still my faves.

The Avatar series is arguably the best animated thing to come out in many years. The first season is kinda goofy, but it matures well over time- and by the third (final) season, it is deathly serious. A huge reccomendation to see at least.
As for Geass, I have the end of the first half now. The Mecha wasn't the focus for me, it was the mental abilities and intelligent methods of Zero/Leluouch. The methods called to me, and the manipulation was intense. Overall, it is difficult to narrow down why I love that series so much- I just do! blaugh
Never seen Gurren Lagann, and never fell for any of the Gundams . . .

Oh, I've seen all of it and completely agree. That aspect of the show was also nice, though it reminded me of Death Note's struggle between L and Kira. I really liked the first season of Code Geass. The second season (don't worry, I won't spoil anything) didn't really do it for me. It definitely does have the intrigue and mind games of the first half though. cool Do yourself a favor, if you're so inclined: http://www.youtube.com/show/gurrenlagannIgnore the poor animation quality of the 4th episode; it was a mistake. Overall, its over-the-top-ness is what really sets it apart. If you've ever seen FLCL, it reminds me a little bit of it. The Gundams are a strange bunch, because even though they are all so similar, they are also all thematically and stylistically different. I definitely understand why many don't care for the Gundams.

I find that L/Kira conflict works for me as well . . . I loved Death Note. However, the extension of Geass into the second season still works for me. It shows a natural progression from a nothing to literally conqueror of the planet. The conflicts are possibly the weakest point since every battle is won not with a clever move, but with the latest advancement the other side isn't ready for. The Radiant Wave Surger, the Lancelot, the Float system, the Hadron cannon, the Shinkiro, etc.
If the closest reference to Langann is FLCL, then I am concerned. It took me several views before I could appreciate the latter . . . not sure I am willing to invest that kind of time into Langann. Still, with the popularity of it on the chan boards, I may give it a look . . .

True, Death Note's second half wasn't nearly as good as the first. I agree with you on the battles in Geass, particularly the second season when mech technology advanced so quickly.
Well, Gurren Lagann isn't nearly as confusing as FLCL. I will admit that there are some deeper elements that might not be caught upon first viewing, but those are merely minor details near the end that fill in some small holes. One viewing of the series is sufficient to understand enough.

I find each show has their own strong points and weak ones, but because of this, they make it to my top anime's.
Death Note and Code Geass show the psychological difficulties in trying to lead double lives, keeping ahead of whatever enemy through sheer determination and genius. The fact that CG has giant mecha in it just adds to the attraction factor.
TTGL I love for the pure awesome. it redefines epic with every episode. Watched it through several times and I still love it.

I hear a lot about DR who from others and have rsearched it enough to understand what the show is about, but it never sparked my interest enough to give it a try.
Wow, the live action Death Note movies are quite good.
