AniMajor TeaDidikai It's a bit like watching a train crash. I think it's more like two kids in bath towel-wizard capes making train noises and crashing into each other. Fixed

Morrigan ) 0 ( Taking on a Goddess name... I am sure are many opinions on this. This is mine. First, ‘take on’ is not the best choice of words. Maybe receive would be better. It is not something one should just do. “To take” sounds a bit disrespectful. Also do you know what it means to bear the name of your Goddess? This comes with great responsibility, as you not just represent Her, you are Her. To have or carry a Goddess name, one carries all the energy of that name. If it is a dark Goddess, be aware that if you have not fully dealt with your shadow, and the negativity in yourself, it will only magnify it. This happens until you deal with it and have it under control. Full article here. Sad thing is, this article has been read over 700 times.

Some of it is fluffy, but at the same time, there is something to it.

Fixed Those bath-towel capes have been passed down for generations in their family, and were originally part of a Druid altar. You can still see the high-magic and human sacrifice stains on it.

I'll have you know, bath towel capes are extraordinarily useful when you spill things. Like the blood of your enemies. Or water. Water spills a lot too.

TeaDidikai Some of it is fluffy, but at the same time, there is something to it. True- having another name for safety reasons, or for commemorating the stage in your seeking that you're in do make sense. I mainly object to the simple "light and dark" stuff, but especially the idea that if you name yourself after a deity then you are that deity. In my tradition this can only take place after specific cleanings and rituals are done, and it's only for the duration of that ritual. Of course, articles like this will never recognize that it's different depending on the context and there is no "generic god/dess name" context that suits everyone. I also did not like that she linked to an article on how to choose a Wiccan name, as if everyone who might choose another name for themselves are necessarily Wiccan.

Fair enough.
I also think the deity in question plays a part too.
Asatru naming their kid Odin? Holy ********. My parents naming me what they did? Not so heavy a burden.

maenad nuri And if you are Greek, well, it's just traditional! I know some Asatru who took very traditional names and are exceptionally anti-Christian. Did you know that Thorfinn is actually a Catholic Saint. twisted Can't wait to bring that up at the next Blot.

Wouldn't that somewhat count as naming your kid after a living relative due to his fatherly position in the pantheon? sweatdrop Besides, there are names that contain Godnames, but that's usually as far as they god. I'd name a kid Thorstein, but I wouldn't name him Thor. Probably wouldn't name him Thorstein to be truthful actually, there are better ways of going about that.
